Georgia State College Volleyball Team Announces 2010 Volleyball Schedule
ATLANTA - With the 2010 season less than two months away, first-year
Georgia State volleyball coach Tami Ores announced the upcoming fall
schedule on Wednesday afternoon. Highlighting the 27-match schedule is a
season opening volleyball tournament in the GSU Sports Arena, as well as trips to
California and Illinois.
The Panthers will open the season at home for the first time since the
2007 season, hosting the Georgia State Invitational Volleyball Tournament.
The Panthers will face Morehead State in the season opening match on August 27th, followed
by matches against North Florida and Wright State on the 28th.“I think it is important for our freshman and newcomers to be able to
open the season at home,” commented Ores. “Having our first weekend
at home will allow them to get settled and relieve some of their nerves
before we hit the road.”
The Georgia State college volleyball team will travel west the following weekend
to participate in the Titan Classic, hosted by Cal State-Fullerton in Fullerton, Calif.
The Panthers volleyball team will take on Colorado in the opening match on September 3rd,
followed by Saturday matches against the host Titans and Montana.“The California trip is going to be a difficult one for us. All three
teams are very good and will give us a good test of what our progress is
going to be.”
Following a midweek match-up with in-state rival Mercer on September
8th, the Panthers will return to Chicago, Ill. for a second straight
year. After playing in the Illinois-Chicago Invitational last season,
the Panthers will take on Radford and DePaul as part of the DePaul
Invitational on September 9th and 10th.
“Going to Chicago is going to allow both Rachel (Boryc) and myself to
go home. I think that we should be able to have a very good showing in
Chicago.”
Before finishing volleyball tournament action, the Panthers will face in-state foe
Georgia on September 14th. It will mark the first time the two college volleyball teams
have played since the 2008 season and first time the Bulldogs have
traveled to Atlanta since the 2006 season, a match the Panthers won
3-2.
State will close out tournament play on September 17th and 18th at the
Clemson Classic. The Panthers will face Florida A&M on Friday night,
before match-ups with the host Tigers and cross-town rival Georgia Tech
on Saturday.
The Georgia State college volleyball team will open CAA play on the road at UNC Wilmington on
September 25th. The Panthers have opened conference play at home in each
of the last two seasons. The Panthers are 11-2 all-time against the
Seahawks, having dropped only one match since joining the CAA.
“I am excited about CAA play. I think we are going to have some work
to do from where we were last year. I think our volleyball team is going to shock a
lot of people this year. The team has been working very hard during the
spring and I believe will come back to school ready to go. I am excited
to see what the preseason brings as our college volleyball tournament schedule should set
us up for conference action.”
Before returning to CAA action, the Panthers will travel into Alabama
to face former conference rival Troy on September 28th. The Panthers are
11-6 all-time against the Trojans.
State will once again have 14 conference matches this season, seven at
home and seven on the road. The Panthers will face seven college volleyball teams starting with Delaware (10/1),Towson (10/3), Hofstra (10/15), Northeastern (10/17), UNC Wilmington
(10/30), James Madison (11/5) and George Mason (11/7) at home.
The matches against James Madison and George Mason will serve as senior
weekend for the four graduating seniors on this year’s volleyball team.
State will face the Seahawks, along with George Mason (10/8), James
Madison (10/9), VCU (10/22), William & Mary (10/23), Towson (11/12) and
Delaware (11/13) on the road during the 2010 season.
“To get back to the CAA Championship in November, obviously we are
going to have to be among the top four teams. We are going to have to
win close matches this year to make up the difference from last year. I
believe that we have to be more disciplined and make sure that we look
at each opponent as an important match. We just can not take a day off
in the CAA.”
The top four college volleyball teams at the end of the regular season will qualify for
the CAA Championship at the site of the regular season champion between
November 19-22. The NCAA Championship will begin two weeks later on
December 2nd.
