LSU Volleyball Coach Fran Flory Moves into RV Camper on Monday To Promote Twitter Goal

BATON ROUGE -LSU volleyball coach Fran Flory will move into a RV camper starting on August 2 in an effort to grow the team's following on Twitter. Fans can help free Flory by following @lsuvolleyball on the social media site.

Once @lsuvolleyball reaches 500 followers, in a week, Flory will be able to go home. The account currently has 319 followers as of 9 a.m. CT on Saturday. The count will begin on August 2 and will hopefully reach over 800 followers.

Fans following @lsuvolleyball will have an opportunity to win exciting prizes and are encouraged to visit the reigning SEC and AVCA South Coach of the Year in her RV camper on campus, which will be located in front of Tiger Stadium on the West Side Parking Lot.

Flory will be visited by members of the LSU Athletics family throughout the week. Video and written blogs from Flory chronicling her experience will be posted on LSUSports.com during the week.

'We're always excited to find ways to give the fans an inside look at our program," Flory said. "Our Twitter account does that from the in-match updates to team news to information on promotions when you come see us play at the Maravich Center.  I need 500 fans to sign-up on @lsuvolleyball next week, the earlier we reach 500 followers the earlier I can go back home."

Under Flory, LSU is one of only 20 programs to appear in each of the last five NCAA Tournaments. The Tigers open the 2010 season with Pacific, Siena and Texas A&M on August 27-28 as part of the Texas A&M Invitational.

Season tickets for the defending SEC champions are on-sale now starting at $40 for adults and $25 for youth ages 3-12.  LSU has four matches scheduled against 2009 NCAA Tournament teams highlighted by Sweet 16 participants Florida and Kentucky at the Maravich Center.

University of Kentucky Wildcats Volleyball Team Selected for Three National Telecasts

Craig Skinner’s squad will appear on ESPNU and Fox Sports Net

 

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.. – Three Kentucky volleyball matches this season have been selected for live national broadcasts it was announced by the Southeastern Conference office, Wednesday.

 

Kentucky will appear on ESPNU once and have two matches broadcast by Fox Sports Net.

 

“We are excited to be on national TV several times this year,” Kentucky coach Craig Skinner said. “This will add to our athletes’ exposure both on a local and national level. The SEC continues to be a leader in exposure for our conference athletes.”

 

The Kentucky-Tennessee match slated for Wed., Sept. 29 in Knoxville, Tenn., will kick off the 2010 ESPNU SEC Volleyball schedule. Match time is set for a 7 p.m. ET start.

 

This marks the second consecutive season the Wildcats will be among the teams for the first televised match of the season by ESPNU. It is also the second consecutive year that ESPNU has picked up a matchup between the border state rivals. Last season’s match between the two schools held in Lexington concluded the ESPNU slate.

 

Kentucky will then be a part of wrapping up the 2010 Fox schedule for SEC Volleyball. UK will host Auburn Sun., Oct. 31 at 1 p.m. ET.

 

The following weekend Fox Sports will show the matchup between the Wildcats and the Crimson Tide of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, Ala. The teams are set to meet on Sun., Nov. 7 for a 2 p.m. ET first serve.

 

This marks the second consecutive season the Wildcats have had three or more nationally televised matches.

 

More television dates are expected to be released in the coming weeks by the Big Blue Sports Network.

 

The SEC, in conjunction with ESPNU, FOX Sports Net (FSN), Comcast/Charter Sports Southeast (CSS) and Cox Sports Television (CST), will combine to broadcast 17 live SEC volleyball matches this season.

Dayton Volleyball Team Picked To Capture A-10 Volleyball Crown

Flyers Expected To Repeat As A-10 Champions

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The University of Dayton women’s volleyball team has been selected as the preseason favorite to win the Atlantic 10 Championship this season. Voting was conducted among the conference’s 10 volleyball head coaches.

“We are honored to be selected as the preseason favorite,” UD head coach Kelly Sheffield said. “We're excited to get started with practices here in a couple of weeks.  We've got some things that we've got to get figured out and a lot of work ahead for ourselves, but it's a group that I'm really looking forward to getting in the gym and working with."

Saint Louis was picked to finish behind Dayton. George Washington was picked third, followed by Xavier, Temple, Charlotte, Duquesne, Rhode Island, Fordham and La Salle.

The Flyers claimed their fifth Atlantic 10 Championship in the last seven years, knocking off the Saint Louis Billikens in a nationally-televised match from the Frericks Center last fall. Dayton continued its success into the NCAA Women’s Volleyball Championships where they advanced to the second round.  UD finished the season ranked 25th in the nation. The Flyers have advanced to the NCAA Tournament six times in the last seven years.

Dayton returns 10 from last year’s squad, including senior All-American middle blocker Lindsay Fletemier.  Last season, Fletemier was also named A-10 Co-Player of the Year. Senior Amanda Cowdrey was named the A-10 Tournament’s Most Outstanding Player, while senior Becky Novacek was first team all-conference and redshirt sophomore Rachel Krabacher was selected to the all-rookie team.

UD Arena was named a regional site for the 2010 NCAA Women’s Volleyball Championship. Dayton joins Penn State, Texas and Washington as regional hosts.

Dayton opens up its season on Aug. 27, hosting Arizona State at 7:00 p.m. ET in the Frericks Center. Admission is free to all Flyer volleyball regular season games played in the Frericks Center.

UC Riverside Volleyball Team Schedule: Seven Matches Against 2009 NCAA Tourney Teams Highlight

UC Riverside Head Volleyball Coach Ron Larsen today released the Highlanders 2010 schedule which features seven matches against 2009 NCAA Tournament participants including three of the team's first six contests. Download volleyball schedule wallpaper.

UCR opens the season at the Fresno State Classic on August 27-28, where they will face Fresno State, 2009 NCAA Tournament participant Oregon, and Santa Clara.

The Highlanders remain in Northern California for their second tournament of the year as they take on San Jose State, UCLA and Saint Mary's on September 3-4 in the San Jose State / Saint Mary's Tournament. Both UCLA and Saint Mary’s participated in the NCAA Tournament last season.

UC Riverside continues tournament play traveling to Tempe, AZ on September 10-11 for the ASU Sheraton Invitational. They will square off against Utah Valley, High Point, and host Arizona State.

The team’s final tournament of the 2010 season pits them against Utah Valley, Loyola Marymount, and Utah State at the Utah State Invitational in Logan, UT from September 17-18.

Big West Conference play gets underway on Friday, September. 24 as the Highlanders open their home season with a 7:30 pm contest against UC Davis.

Long Beach State, winners of 10 Big West Conference Championships including the last two straight, come calling at the Student Recreation Center on Saturday, October 16 at 7:00 pm.

The Highlanders conclude regular season play with a home match against 2009 NCAA Tournament participant UC Santa Barbara at 7:00 pm at the Student Rec Center on Saturday, Novovember 20.

SEC Will Have a Total of 17 Matches on TV in 2010

 

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – For the second year in a row, the University of Tennessee volleyball team will be featured on national television five times. The Lady Volunteers will appear on ESPNU twice and on Comcast Sports Southeast (CSS) three times.

 

Four of the five televised contests will air from the friendly confines of Thompson-Boling Arena in Knoxville, opening with a 2 p.m. showdown against perennially-ranked Florida at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 19 on CSS. The Orange and White will then make its ESPNU debut when it hosts border-rival Kentucky at 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 29.

 

The lone road match that will hit the airwaves will take place in Gainesville, Fla., when ESPNU will broadcast the Big Orange taking on the Gators in a mid-week showdown on Wednesday, Oct. 20 at 8 p.m. from the Stephen C. O’Connell Center.

 

The final two televised matches will both air on CSS as Tennessee will welcome Georgia and Arkansas to Rocky Top for 2 p.m. contests on Sunday, Oct. 31 and Sunday, Nov. 14, respectively.

 

The five television matches tie Florida for the most in the league and match the program high set last season in the first year of the Southeastern Conference’s contract with ESPN. Tennessee has made 20 television appearances over the past seven seasons, posting a perfect 5-0 record on the tube last year.

 

A total of 17 SEC volleyball matches will be broadcast this season in conjunction with ESPNU, FOX Sports Net (FSN), Cox Sports Television (CST) and CSS. That is one more than last year and is the most in conference history. All matches will be broadcast live. ESPNU reaches over 73 million homes, FSN reaches 25 million and CSS/CST reaches 10 million homes.

SLU honored for second straight season

 

ST. LOUIS – Saint Louis received its second straight American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Team Academic Award Monday. The Billikens are one of 94 NCAA Division I teams, and 450 squads across all divisions, to earn the distinction for the 2009-10 academic year.

 

The award, which was initiated in the 1992-93 academic year, honors collegiate and high school volleyball teams that displayed excellence in the classroom by maintaining at least a 3.30 cumulative team grade-point average on a 4.0 scale or a 4.10 cumulative team GPA on a 5.0 scale.

 

"There is no better way to gauge the success of a sport than to track the accomplishments of the people who participate," said AVCA Executive Director Kathy DeBoer. "Each of these 450 teams represents 12-15 really smart kids. What a great day for the sport of volleyball!"

 

The Team Academic Award has become one of the AVCA's fastest growing awards programs, seeing an impressive surge in teams honored over the past several years. The program has increased by more than 300 percent in the last 10 years and by 79 percent in the past three years alone. Both NCAA Division I and NCAA Division II recorded their highest-ever total numbers of recipients, with the former honoring 94 programs and the latter honoring 55 programs. The high school division also set a new bar with its 179 honorees.



 

There were 119 first-time recipients of the AVCA Team Academic Award in 2009-10. NCAA Division I and NCAA Division II each saw 15 teams achieve the honor for the first time, while NCAA Division III welcomed 17 newcomers.  Thirteen NAIA teams, two NCCAA teams and a pair of two-year colleges garnered recognition for the first time, while 55 high school teams (51 girls' teams and four boys' teams) received their first AVCA Team Academic nod.



 

More than 1,000 schools have earned the award in the program's 18-year history, and over 2,900 awards have been given out in all. Only two institutions have earned the distinction all 18 years: Jonesboro High School (Jonesboro, Ark.) and Ross S. Sterling High School (Baytown, Texas).

Texas Volleyball Team To Appear on TV three times in 2010

The Longhorns will play twice on ESPNU and once on FOX Sports Net this season.

IRVING, Texas – The University of Texas Volleyball team will play on national television three times during the 2010 season. The Longhorns will be televised twice on ESPNU and once on FOX Sports Net as part of the Big 12’s TV package.

 

FOX Sports Net will carry the first of Texas’ three televised matches when they air the Horns’ match at Nebraska on Saturday, Oct. 2 at 8 p.m. Central. Texas will then appear on ESPNU when it travels to Oklahoma on Wednesday, Oct. 13 for a 6 p.m. Central match. The final televised match will be the Longhorns’ home match with Nebraska on Wednesday, Oct. 27 at 8 p.m. Central.

UT Arlington Volleyball Team Earns AVCA Academic Team Award

ARLINGTON, Texas – The UT Arlington volleyball team was one of 94 NCAA Division I programs that earned the American Volleyball Coaches Association Academic Team of the Year Award for the 2009-2010 season. Overall, AVCA handed out 450 team awards at all levels, which broke the previous record of 409 set in 2008-09.

 

The AVCA Team Academic Award honors volleyball teams at the high school and college level that are successful in the classroom. Nominees include high school or college teams that have a minimum cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.30 (on a 4.00 scale) during the full academic year (both semesters) and include all varsity athletes who competed in volleyball with the institution for any portion of the academic year.

 

The Mavericks had 10 volleyball student-athletes tally at least a 3.0 GPA in both semesters and including the fall and spring semesters, there were six perfect 4.0 GPA’s recorded.

 

UT Arlington had a 3.411 team GPA for the spring semester and posted a 3.353 team GPA in the fall semester. In fact, under the direction of head coach Diane Seymour, the Mavericks have tallied at least a 3.0 team GPA in 12 consecutive semesters, dating back to Seymour’s first season as head coach in 2004.

 

Eleven of the 12 volleyball student-athletes on the 2009 squad landed on the UT Arlington Athletic Director’s Academic Honor Roll at least once during the 2009-2010 school year.

LEXINGTON, Ky. — For the seventh consecutive year, the University of Memphis volleyball program was recognized as one of 94 Division I volleyball programs to earn the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Team Academic Award for the 2009-10 school year the volleyball association announced.

 

Memphis, which posted a 3.64 cumulative GPA in the fall semester and a 3.386 GPA in the spring semester, was one of a record 450 teams to earn the yearly honor. The program has now earned the Team awards every year since 2003.

 

C-USA All Academic picks Christine Bach and Becky Shaffer were joined by fellow senior Emily Underwood as the clubs three student-athletes to turn in perfect 4.0 GPA’s in both the fall and spring semesters. Three other Tiger volleyball players (Katlin Inglish, Casey Sines and Lauren Thompson) earned 4.0’s in one of the two semesters. The program recorded 19 Tiger 3.0 finishes and 14 Dean’s List honors last year. Of its 13 players, 12 posted cumulative GPA’s of 3.0 or better for the school year.

 

The award, which was initiated in the 1992-93 academic year, honors collegiate and high school volleyball teams that displayed excellence in the classroom during the school year by maintaining at least a 3.30 cumulative team grade-point average on a 4.0 scale or a 4.10 cumulative team GPA on a 5.0 scale.

 

Memphis will kick off its 2010 season on August 27, when it takes on Jacksonville State in the Belmont Invitational in Nashville, Tenn.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (July 22, 2010) – The Mountain West Conference 2010 volleyball television schedule was released today and features 19 matches on national television, including six BYU matches. 

The Mtn. – MountainWest Sports Network will broadcast 11 matches, while three will air on CBS College Sports Network. 

The Mtn.’s first television broadcast of 2010 will feature the Friday, September 17 non-conference match between UAB and TCU. The match will air via same-day tape delay on Friday, September 17 at 8:30 p.m. CT. The first broadcast of the year on CBS College Sports Network will showcase Colorado State at Utah at 2 p.m. MT on Sunday, September 26. 

BYU’s home games against Utah State, Colorado State, UNLV, San Diego State and TCU will be broadcast on BYUtv, while the Oct. 29 game at Utah will be broadcast on The Mtn. 

The Mtn. is carried nationally by DIRECTV (Channel 616) and numerous cable operators representing over 200 municipalities in nine states. CBS College Sports Network is widely available on cable systems and video providers across the country, and via satellite on DIRECTV (Channel 613) and Dish Network (Channel 152).

William and Mary Volleyball Team Adds Audra Harrison as Assistant Coach

Former Gardner-Webb Standout Joins Tribe from Midwestern State

WILLIAMSBURG - William and Mary head volleyball coach Melissa Aldrich Shelton '91 announced the hiring of Audra Harrison today as assistant volleyball coach, replacing John Critzer '97 who took a full-time assistant coaching position at Stephen F. Austin this summer. Harrison's responsibilities with the Tribe will include working with the pin hitters and back-court specialists during practice, home game management, and team travel. She will also help out with the evaluation and recruitment of prospects.

"During the interview process it was obvious that Audra fit right in with our program," said Shelton. "She's competitive, hard working and energetic. I'm looking forward to working with her on a daily basis and I know the players will enjoy learning from her in the gym."

Harrison joins the Tribe after spending the past two years as a graduate assistant at Midwestern State University, helping the Mustangs to a combined 35-34 record and a 25-win season in 2008. MSU was her first coaching job out of college, after graduating from Gardner-Webb in 2008. Harrison graduated as the Bulldog's all-time leader with 1,576 career digs, and ranked second with 1,067 kills while splitting time as both an outside hitter and libero. She was a three-time member of the Atlantic Sun All-Academic squad, and had career-highs of 29 kills and 32 digs in a match.

Harrison graduated from Gardner-Webb with a degree in physical education, and earned her masters degree in that same field from Midwestern State in 2010.

Oregon State Volleyball Team Earns Second AVCA Team Academic Award

Volleyball Earns Second AVCA Team Academic Award

 

Lexington, Ky. – The Oregon State volleyball team is a recipient of the 2009-10 American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Team Academic Award, announced Tuesday. This is the second award for the Beavers, capturing the same honor in 2007-08.

 

The award, which was introduced in the 1992-93 academic year, honors teams who have matched their dedication to the sport of volleyball with excellence in the classroom. This year there were 450 high school and college teams that earned the award, 94 of those being Division I women’s teams.

 

The team completed its goal of posting a team grade point average above a 3.0 every term after earning a 3.38 in the fall, a 3.34 in the winter and 3.42 in the spring, and it has led all intercollegiate teams at Oregon State for four straight terms, beginning with the spring 2009 term. Overall, the 2009 squad earned a cumulative 3.36 for the academic year.

 

Volleyball earned the second most Pac-10 All-Academic nods during the 2009 season with six, led by senior Bree Knitter (Fallbrook, Calif.) and junior Jill Sawatzky (St. Andrews, Manitoba), who were named the first team. Over 100 Oregon State student-athletes were named to Pac-10 All-Academic teams.

 

To be eligible for the award, teams must have at least a 3.30 GPA on a 4.0 scale, and the head coach must describe his/her academic philosophy and how the team maintains success in the classroom.

 

The Beavers start their 2010 campaign at home on Saturday, Aug. 21 at 12:00 p.m. in the Orange and Black Scrimmage before hosting the Corvallis Invitational the following weekend in legendary Gill Coliseum.
