IPFW Mastodon Women’s Volleyball Team Mastodons Earn Team Academic Honor
Fort Wayne, IN – For the second straight season, the IPFW Mastodon women’s volleyball team has earned the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Team Academic Award. The Mastodons are one of a program-record 450 teams across two genders, including high school and six levels of college volleyball.
The award, which was initiated in the 1992-93 academic year, honors collegiate and high school volleyball teams that displayed excellence in the classroom during the school year by maintaining at least a 3.30 cumulative team grade-point average on a 4.0 scale.
“There is no better way to gauge the success of a sport than to track the accomplishments of the people who participate,” said AVCA Executive Director Kathy Deboer in a statement released by the AVCA. “Each of these 450 teams represents 12-15 really smart kids. What a great day for the sport of volleyball.
There were 94 teams from NCAA Division I to earn the honor, one of four Summit League squads, and one of just three teams from the state of Indiana, joined by the University of Evansville and Indiana State.
The Mastodons open their 2010 season on August 27, when the team hosts the IPFW Invitational, and will face off against Tulsa on Friday the 27th, and against Saint Louis and Milwaukee on the 28th.
