Southern Miss Volleyball Team: Golden Eagles Fall To Marshall, 3-0
HUNTINGTON, W. Va. – The Southern Miss volleyball team lost to Marshall by a score of 25-23, 25-22,25-17 in Conference USA action Sunday afternoon.
The Golden Eagles dropped to 19-11 overall and 12-7 in league play while Marshall improved to 11-19 overall and 5-13.
Junior Lauren Sears (Ashburn, Va.) led the Eagles with 11 kills while Ashley Mell (Linda Yorba, Calif.) added nine. Lisa Knecht (Metairie, La.) totaled a match-high 29 digs.
As a team, Southern Miss finished with 32 kills, 32 assists, 60 digs and 5.0 team blocks while the Thundering Herd totaled 50 kills, 45 assists, 66 digs and 7.0 team blocks. Marshall outhit the Eagles .326 to .254.
Marshall’s Kaitlin Holm tallied a 13 kills followed by Abby Tomas and Kelley Bugler with 11 and 10 kills, respectively. Elizabeth Fleming dished out 39 assists as Ryanne Milligan led the Herd with 16 digs, Dorothy Rahal and Laura Der added 15 and 14 digs.
Southern Miss took a 9-2 lead to start the first set before Marshall rallied to cut the lead to, 10-8, using a 6-1 run. The Eagles pushed their lead to 22-15 with a combination of six kills, a block and Marshall miscues. The Herd then scored five straight points forcing the Eagles to take a timeout. Out of the timeout, Marshall continued its run, tacking on four more points to get to set point at 24-22. USM held off one set point, but Marshall ended the set with a kill from Cameron Yoho for the 25-23 win.
The Golden Eagles ran out to a 12-5 lead before Marshall stormed back to tie the set at 15-15. The two teams traded points for the next 11 possessions before the Eagles called their second timeout. Out of the timeout, Marshall got a Der kill to put the Herd up 22-20. The teams traded four two kills before Yoho finished the set with a kill for the 25-22 win.
Following the intermission, the teams started out even until Marshall got back to back kills from Yoho, a USM attack error and Holm kill for the 8-4 lead. Marshall eventually pushed its lead to 16-11 forcing the Eagles to take their second timeout. Sears put down a kill to get the Eagles to 16-12, but Marshall ended the set with a 9-5 run to take the set, 25-17.
Southern Miss concludes the regular season at Tulane, Nov. 27. First serve is set for 7 p.m.
