Steve Vencl Named Assistant Volleyball Coach
Joins Program Under Head Coach Molly Alvey

HOUSTON – University of Houston volleyball head coach Molly Alvey announced the hiring of Steve Vencl to her staff Friday. Vencl will serve as assistant coach with assistant Nicole Miller.

“With Steve joining the program, we gain a new and positive dynamic to the team and the culture that we are constantly trying to nurture,” Alvey said. “He has a positive energy and a good outlook on life.  He is a great people person. He has an enthusiasm for volleyball so much so that he has changed careers in order to follow his passion.”

In his role as assistant coach, Vencl will serve as the team’s travel coordinator and will restructure the program’s utilization of video for training and scouting in addition to on-court training and recruiting.

“Our plan for Steve is to grow and develop our teaching methods by advancing the application of our video systems for training,” Alvey added. “He will also play an integral role in recruiting.”

Prior to coming to Houston, Vencl served as the volunteer assistant coach at Marquette during the 2010 season. That year the program set the school record for wins (23) and conference wins (11) and posted a school-record 14-match win streak. They finished third in the Big East standings, and Vencl coached three players to AVCA All-Region honors.

He also assisted with the implementation of practice plans and provided daily position training to the middle hitters, outside hitters, right-side hitters and the defensive specialists while at Marquette. In his role as volunteer assistant, Vencl also was responsible for all opponent video breakdown and the execution of the weekly video exchange.

Prior to his time at Marquette, Vencl was the assistant coach at Baldwin-Wallace College where he assisted with the daily organization and planning of practice. He also provided individual training to the middle and outside hitters. In addition, Vencl was responsible for scouting and compiling game plans. He also assisted with the development of the strength and conditioning program and coordinated all home match management duties.

Vencl was also the head coach of the Toledo men’s volleyball club from 2005-2006. While in that position he managed all try-outs, practices and matches. He also developed the strength and conditioning program and managed the team’s administration including, team travel and equipment and uniform purchases. He was a member of the team form 1999-2002.

He has also served as a club coach with the Cleveland Volleyball Company and the Toledo Volleyball Club and was an assistant coach at St. Ursula Academy in Toledo, Ohio.

Vencl received a bachelor of arts from the University of Toledo.

Rachel Jones Is The Third To Join 2011 Recruiting Class

DAYTON, Ohio – Head Coach Kelly Sheffield announced the addition of defensive specialist Rachel Jones to the University of Dayton volleyball program for the 2011-12 academic year on Thursday.

As a four-year starter for Upper St. Clair High School in the Pittsburgh area, Jones guided the Panthers to four consecutive PIAA Section 2 titles and a combined 51-8 record. As a senior, Jones earned First Team All-WPIAL Class AAA, First Team All-Section 2 AAA, and was named a “Terrific 21” Class AAA All-Star for the second consecutive season.  

"Rachel has the characteristics that you think of when you think of Dayton Flyer Volleyball,” Head Coach Kelly Sheffield said. “She's tough, ultra competitive, coachable, and wants to be great. She is very athletic and has a Rachael Broerman quality in that she's willing to run through walls, if necessary. She comes from the same club that Becky Novacek played for, and is getting really good training. Rachel has all the qualities to be a dominant player at her position for us."

Jones is considered to be one of  the best athletes to go through Renaissance Volleyball Club, the same club team which produced Novacek – the 2010 Atlantic 10 Student-Athlete of the Year and a two-time First Team All-Conference performer. Jones was also named to the 2010 AVCA Under Armour All-America Watch List as one of the top 300 players in the nation, along with fellow 2011 Dayton signees Isolde Hannan and Kaitlyn Krause.

Jones is a member of the National Honor Society at Upper St. Clair and will study in the Physical Science Program as a student-athlete at UD. She is the daughter of Daniel and Debra Jones and has two siblings, Stephanie and Jeremy.

Volleyball Socks, Here Are A Few Blister Reducing Tips

 

Buying volleyball socks can be just as important as buying the right volleyball shoes.

Female volleyball players participate in year long volleyball seasons, starting with the high school volleyball season which goes right into the club season which usually means playing in sweaty shoes and socks continuously from August of one year to July of the next.

With very few breaks in an 11 month season you really want to know what it takes to be able to preserve your feet so that you can avoid some of the more common foot problems that can sideline you or just make it plain uncomfortable to play in a whole game or whole volleyball tournament pain-free.

Some popular (or rather unpopular) but common foot problems are blisters, infections, bunions, bursitis, toenail/tissue injuries, and all of these issues can contribute to you not being able to concentrate on just playing your best possible volleyball game.

When choosing volleyball socks there are a few tips you may want to keep in mind so that you can reduce the possibility of contracting any of the above mentioned ailments.

So, check this out...I know that cotton is normally a great fiber to have in every day walking around normal clothes but apparently because cotton absorbs moisture, which in this case would be your sweat, it's reportedly not the best ingredient to be found in your volleyball socks. And neither is wool.

Female volleyball players have active feet, an active feet can normally sweat four to six ounces of water a day...that's without being in volleyball practice. (who knew?)

So just figure that when you are at volleyball practice, you can only imagine how much more that your feet are sweating.

"In athletic activity, perspiration output on the feet can exceed one pint per foot. A large part of this moisture may actually accumulate in the feet as it is produced elsewhere on the body surface and drips down the legs due to gravity." (American Academy of Podiatric Sports Medicine)  

Well, while your feet are doing all that sweating, your body is too, and a good portion of all that water is dripping right down into your shoes.

If you are wearing cotton socks, then the cotton is absorbing and holding all that moisture against your feet, which increases friction, heat and discomfort in your volleyball shoes.

So now do you know why you may have gotten that friction blister at the last volleyball tournament you played in?

According to the sock and shoe experts, the best volleyball socks will wick the moisture away transporting it to ..check this out...outside of the shoe by way of a breathable shoe texture which is standard on most athletic and volleyball shoes.

When I found this out I decided that I loved my Asics volleyball shoes even more because they are light, airy and I can tell that my feet and socks have room to breathe and places where the sweat gets wicked out.   

There have been studies done that showed that when materials like CoolMax and Smartwool were added to athletic or volleyball socks they helped reduced the amount of blisters that the wearers had.

Here's another blister-reducing tip: consider looking for a double layer acrylic sock over a single layer sock since socks with the new synthetic fibers have consistently outperformed all-wool or all-cotton socks.

Not only have these types of volleyball socks with acrylic outperformed cotton fiber volleyball socks, they apparently have outlasted them.   

Some studies comparing  synthetic fiber socks vs. cotton socks, show that after wetting cotton fiber socks,they tended to stretch and lose their shape inside the shoe. This bunching and wrinkling occurrence was much less likely to happen to acrylic fiber socks.

After numerous cycles of washing and wearing them, cotton fiber socks were noted to become abrasive which increased the potential for irritation on the skin surface of the athlete, meaning blisters!

As far as fitting in your volleyball socks is concerned, you may want to try on both the volleyball socks that you are thinking about buying with the volleyball shoes that you think you will be playing in, so that you get the right fit.

Blisters occur when your volleyball socks are too big for your feet, or they occur when your socks are too small which keeps your toes from spreading out comfortably in your shoes. Friction is caused by the toes constantly rubbing against each other.

Just imagine the heat that is caused when you constantly rub two sticks together, now I think you get my drift.

The thickness of your volleyball socks is important because athletes who participate in sports with side-to-side movements are advised to have more cushion on the ball of their foot.

We, female volleyball players because of the types of shoes that we wear for our sport, are recommended to look for volleyball socks or athletic socks with more cushioned soles and extended heel pads to protect the Achilles heel.

We are creative individuals so of course at times we will want to wear funky volleyball socks or crazy volleyball socks because that's a team choice.

But, when possible you may want to consider buying volleyball socks or athletic socks that are authorized to use the American Podiatric Medical Association's seal of acceptance.

Cyclones, Huskers Volleyball Teams To Meet In Spring Action
 
AMES, Iowa – The Cyclone volleyball team will face the Nebraska Cornhuskers during the 2011 spring season, it was announced Wednesday. The teams will face off at the NU Coliseum at 7 p.m. on Saturday April 16.
 
Reserved and general admission tickets to the spring match will be sold beginning Wednesday Feb. 2 at Huskers.com, by calling the NU Ticket Office at 800-8BIGRED or in person at the Nebraska Athletic Ticket Office weekdays between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Reserved tickets are $10 and general admission tickets are prices at $8.
 
Iowa State and Nebraska met twice in conference play during the 2010 regular season with the Huskers earning both victories. In the first conference match of the season, the No. 11 Cyclones fell to the No. 4 Huskers 3-1. In October, 12th-ranked Iowa State made the trip to Lincoln, Neb., losing to No. 2 Nebraska in straight sets.
 
The Cyclones (20-9, 13-7 Big 12) finished the season ranked No. 25 after making their fifth-straight and sixth-overall trip to the NCAA Tournament.

Holy Cross Volleyball Team Places Five On Patriot League Academic Honor Roll

WORCESTER, Mass. – Five members of the Holy Cross volleyball team have been selected to the 2010 Patriot League Academic Honor Roll, as announced by the league office.
Holy Cross was represented by seniors Angela Chisholm (Millis, Mass.) and Rebecca DeSanti (Hampden, Mass.); and sophomores Liz Ashton (Milford, Mass.), Megan Lynch (Mendham, N.J.) and Elizabeth Watters (San Francisco, Calif.). 
A total of 47 student-athletes from volleyball teams around the league were named to the Academic Honor Roll. To be eligible, a student-athlete must earn a 3.20 grade-point average in the fall semester and be a member of the school's team in one of the seven Patriot League-sponsored fall championship sports.

Iowa State Volleyball Team Announces Spring Schedule
 
AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State volleyball team has solidified its spring schedule, head coach Christy Johnson-Lynch announced Wednesday. The four-date schedule includes in-state rival Northern Iowa, Big 12 foe Kansas State and former Big 12 rival Nebraska.
 
The Cyclones will begin the spring slate at home, hosting Wayne State, Minnesota and Northern Iowa at West Towne Courts at 10 a.m. CST on March 26. The Cyclones defeated then-No. 18 Northern Iowa during the 2010 regular season at home in the Ames High School gym.
 
On April 2, Iowa State will travel to the University of Illinois where the teams will run drills at Bettendorf High School in Bettendorf, Iowa from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. before scrimmaging at 3 p.m. CST. Both sessions are open to the public.
 
Big 12 rival Kansas State will be one of three teams awaiting the Cyclones at a tournament hosted by the University of Nebraska at Kearney. Colorado State is the fourth participant at the tournament which will begin at 10 a.m. CST on April 9 in Kearney, Neb. A competition gym as yet to be determined.
 
Completing the spring in blockbuster fashion, the Cyclones will head to Lincoln, Neb. to take on the Nebraska Cornhuskers at the NU Coliseum at 7 p.m. CST on April 16. Tickets for the Cyclones/Huskers match are currently on sale through Huskers.com and by calling the Nebraska Athletics Ticket office at 800-8BIGRED. Reserved tickets are $10 and general admission tickets are prices at $8.
