Lady Vol Volleyball Player Nikki Fowler Awarded NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Although her collegiate volleyball career has come to an end, former University of Tennessee standout Nikki Fowler’s academic career continues to take off as she has been awarded a prestigious NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship.
The awards valued at $7,500 have been granted by the NCAA to 29 male and 29 female student-athletes who participated in football, men’s and women’s soccer, men’s and women’s cross country, equestrian, field hockey, volleyball and water polo.
To qualify for an NCAA postgraduate scholarship, a student-athlete must have an overall grade-point average of 3.20 (on a 4.00 scale) or its equivalent, and must have performed with distinction as a member of the varsity team in the sport in which the student-athlete was nominated. The chosen student-athletes demonstrated dedication and effort, while performing both on and off the field at a high level, bringing credit to the student-athlete, the institution and intercollegiate athletics.
“I could not be more proud of Nikki for what she has accomplished over the last four years here at Tennessee, both on the volleyball court and in the classroom,” UT Head Coach Rob Patrick said. “We constantly stress the importance of academics with our team and Nikki has taken that to heart. Her work ethic and the example that she provides has set the bar extremely high for others to strive for within our program.
“She has been the consummate student-athlete and I am extremely excited that she has been awarded this scholarship. I am confident that she will be highly successful in whatever career she chooses to pursue.”
Set to graduate in May with a degree in marketing and a minor in international business, Fowler currently sports a 3.8 GPA and became just the second Lady Vol volleyball player in school history to be named a Capital One/CoSIDA First Team Academic All-American this fall. The Dallas, Texas, native was also tabbed the 2010 SEC Co-Scholar Athlete of the Year.
Fowler is the fourth Lady Vol to be awarded an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship in the last two years, as softball’s Lillian Hammond and Tiffany Huff and track and field’s Phoebe Wright did so in 2010. No other Southeastern Conference school has had more than two women’s athletes earn the same scholarship during that time frame.
A three-time American Volleyball Coaches Association All-American and All-SEC First Team selection on the court, Fowler is the most decorated volleyball player in Lady Vol history. Her name can be found all over the Tennessee record book as she finished her time as a Lady Vol ranked in the top 10 in seven career categories. A native of Dallas, Texas, she stands first all-time in total attacks (4,426), third in attacks per set (9.54), fourth in kills (1,649), sixth in kills per set (3.55), sixth in digs (1,281), seventh in digs per set (2.76) and eighth in blocks (344).
Over the course of her four-year career at Rocky Top, Fowler notched a double-double in 41.9 percent of her collegiate contests, accomplishing the feat 52 times in 124 career matches. In 2010, she led the Lady Vols with 393 kills (3.51/set) and 938 attacks (8.38/set), ranked second with 324 digs (2.89/set), third with a career-best .306 hitting percentage and fifth with 61 blocks (0.54/set).
The NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship was created in 1964 to promote and encourage postgraduate education by rewarding the Association's most accomplished student-athletes through their participation in NCAA championship and/or emerging sports. Athletics and academic achievements, as well as campus involvement, community service, volunteer activities and demonstrated leadership, are evaluated. An equitable approach is employed in reviewing each applicant's nomination form to provide opportunity to all student-athlete nominees to receive the postgraduate award, regardless of sport, division, gender or race. In maintaining the highest broad-based standards in the selection process, the program aims to reward those individuals whose dedication and effort are reflective of those characteristics necessary to succeed and thrive through postgraduate study in an accredited graduate degree program.
UWM Panthers Volleyball Team Getting Ready For Challenging Spring Slate
MILWAUKEE - The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's volleyball team starts its challenging spring schedule at the Badger Spring Invite Saturday.
The Panthers will also play in the Three Wise Men Classic in Chicago next weekend while squaring off with Marquette and Western Michigan in single matches over the next few weeks.
The spring competition schedule comes after the Panthers have spent an extensive amount of time on off-season practices, weight workouts and conditioning in preparation for the 2011 season, when Milwaukee will try to win the Horizon League regular season title for the eighth time in the last nine years.
"Things have been going really well. It is extremely competitive in practice every day," UWM head coach Susie Johnson said. "It is exciting to look at the development of players, the energy, and really seeing everyone getting ready for the fall. It is fun to be around the team and the competition we have every day. The players are all pushing each other to get better."
Plenty of familiar faces return for the Panthers, who went 20-9 a season ago. Milwaukee has won 85 matches in four seasons under Johnson, who was named the league coach of the year for the third time. Horizon League Player of the Year Kerri Schuh (2.88 kills per set, 3.10 digs per set, 1.03 blocks per set) and league newcomer of the year Rachel Neuberger (1.71 kps, 1.08 bps) head the list of returnees, while hitters Elizabeth Egerer (2.69 kps) and Mary Beth O'Brien (2.22 kps) are also back to spark the offense. Defensively, back row regulars Morgan Potter (4.67 dps) and Anna Bartz (2.07 dps) return.
Throw in three reserves from last season - Melissa Jansen, Mackenzie Millis and Samantha Trawitzke - along with redshirt freshmen Julie Kolinske and Amber Simonton, and Johnson has no shortage of options and combinations to try out this spring. Then, come the fall, recruits Hannah Blanchard, Kayla Price, Arianna Wiersma and Taylor Golabowski will be added to the mix.
"It's up in the air on some levels," Johnson said of her lineup for the spring and even this fall. "Some people are playing multiple positions and we have some really competitive situations in some positions. It is fun to see how positive every player is about it. They know they have to earn it and they are all willing to fight for the chance to be on the court."
Since last season ended in a disappointing league semifinal loss to Valparaiso, the Panthers have had their eyes on getting back to the floor in 2011. Johnson says it has been apparent her team is even more dedicated to returning to the top of the league and to the NCAA Tournament.
"You had to look for a positive after our loss at the end of the year, and the only thing I could come up with is that we're all going to work harder and really appreciate what we have in front of us," Johnson said. "When you come up short, you come back with more drive and everyone has been working hard in the weight room, in conditioning and on the court. We all realize it's not just a given that you win - you have to work for it and you have to really own it and realize that it's possible to win and possible to lose. We've learned you can't take a day off, and we'll try to put that into action this spring. You can say it doesn't count, but to me it does, at least when it comes to trying to get better every day. That's the goal for us and we're excited to actually start this Saturday."
Saturday is the first of four days full of great tests for the Panthers. UWM will get a shot at both Minnesota and Iowa this weekend in Madison, while next weekend in Chicago the Panthers will play both Illinois and Washington. Milwaukee's two single matches - at Marquette April 7 and home against Western Michigan April 16 - will pit the Panthers against a pair of 20-win teams.
"In the spring we are able to play so many great teams from our region, all in places that are close by," Johnson said. "We're able to play Big Ten teams, Big East teams, high-quality teams from the MAC. I always really want to push it in the spring and challenge our team because that's what we're going for - we want to get to that next level. So we'll learn a lot about ourselves and we'll really be prepared for the fall."

Chicago, Ill. – The Nebraska volleyball finished its spring trip to Chicago with an undefeated run through the Great Lakes Collegiate Challenge on Saturday afternoon.
“We had a great week in Chicago,” Head Coach John Cook said. “ The opportunity to train in the mornings and experience Chicago in the afternoons and evenings was special for our new staff and our 2011 team.”
The Huskers opened Saturday with a 2-0 sweep of Toledo behind solid play from sophomore Hayley Thramer, who was seeing her first competitive action since last spring. Thramer missed the 2010 season while recovering from a shoulder injury she suffered during 2010 spring drills.
Nebraska then moved on to face future Big Ten foe Wisconsin, who had taken down Louisville in the first round. The Huskers made quick work of the Badgers with another 2-0 win.
The championship game featured another match-up with a Big Ten program in Michigan State. The Spartans were unable to halt the Huskers’ run as NU stayed perfect on the day with a third 2-0 win.
“To end the week by winning the tournament was a reflection of the hard work our team has put in here,” Cook said. “Our team is committed to using the spring as a time to establish our roles, improve, and learn how to compete!”
The Huskers will now turn their attention towards their April 9 meeting with Wichita State in Grand Island at the Heartland Events Center. Tickets are currently on sale thru Ticketmaster and at the Heartland Event Center Box Office. All tickets are reserved at $12 and $10. Courtside seats are available for $25 and there is a business package that consists of 4 courtside and 6 reserved for $400.

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Former Georgia Tech standout Laura Kuhn has been named a volleyball assistant coach for the University of Kansas it was announced by head coach Ray Bechard Tuesday.
A four-year letterwinner at Georgia Tech from 2001-2004, Kuhn comes to Kansas after spending three years as an assistant at the University of Miami from 2008-10. She has also made coaching stops as an assistant coach at Appalachian State and Florida State.
“Laura is a great addition to the Kansas volleyball program,” said Bechard. “She combines an infectious personality with a tremendous passion for the sport. There has a noticeable presence about her and she has a real knack for recruiting.”
“We are thrilled to get somebody who we think represents a terrific role model for our female student-athletes and a great role model for female coaches. Laura is somebody who has played at high level, played in the NCAA Tournament and coached in the NCAA Tournament and she knows what you have to do be at that level.”
While on staff with the Hurricanes, UM advanced to the NCAA Tournament two of the three seasons (2009 & 2010) Kuhn was on staff. It marked the second and third tournament berths since the program was brought back in 2001.
At Miami, Kuhn, affectionately known as ‘Bird,’ was instrumental in coaching outside hitter Lane Carico, who became the program’s first-ever AVCA All-American in 2010. One season earlier, Carico and Cassie Loessberg were named honorable mention All-Americans under Kuhn’s guidance.
In 2008, she helped in the Hurricanes posting their best overall record (26-6) since 2002, and the best Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) record in school history going 14-6 in league play. Defensively, the Hurricanes posted the highest digs total (1,958) for a single-season in 2008, while also registering the highest digs per set count in UM history (16.88).
Kuhn arrived at Miami after a stint as assistant coach at FSU during the 2008 spring season. Prior to her time at Florida State, Kuhn was an assistant at Appalachian State. In 2007 with the Mountaineers, Kuhn coached the Southern Conference Player of the Year, Brittany Zahn, and worked under Matt Ginipro, who was the SoCon Coach of the Year after Appalachian State finished 14-2.
“I am excited about competing in the Big 12 and the challenges and the new roles I will have at Kansas. And being the recruiting coordinator is a great opportunity, that’s what I love about my job,” said Kuhn. “The people I met at Kansas are what sold it for me. The tradition and the energy and the support that I felt for the program really attracted me to the job.”
During her four years playing at Georgia Tech, the Yellow Jackets won three ACC regular season championships, one ACC tournament title and advanced to the NCAA Tournament in each of her four seasons playing. The teams advanced to the "Sweet 16" and "Elite Eight" in 2003 and 2004, respectively. Kuhn played the right side position her final three years at Georgia Tech, starting all three seasons.
A native of Tiffin, Ohio, Kuhn was a two-sport standout athlete at Calvert High School, where she excelled at both volleyball and basketball. While in high school, Kuhn earned Junior Olympic All-America honors for the Toledo Volleyball Club in 2000.
Kuhn earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Management from Georgia Tech in 2005.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Following a tryout session in Colorado Springs, Colo., last month, three members of the Tennessee volleyball team have been named to the 2011 U.S. Women’s National A2 Program roster, USA Volleyball has announced.
With Kayla Jeter, Leslie Cikra and Kelsey Robinson each making the squad, the Lady Vols tie with Texas, Florida and Illinois for the most representatives from a single college team. A total of 36 players from 22 different colleges were selected from a record-setting 204 tryout participants.
“To have three players represent our program with USA Volleyball is tremendous,” UT Head Coach Rob Patrick said. “It is really a testament to the incredibly talented student-athletes that have committed to be a part of Tennessee volleyball and much of that credit can be assigned to my assistant coach Gregg Whitis. We are extremely excited about the upcoming season and these three players are a big reason why. This is a fantastic opportunity for each of them and will only help to increase their skill level and confidence.”
The U.S. Women’s National A2 Program will take place in Dallas from May 23 through June 1. The program includes training and competition in the 2011 USA Volleyball Open National Championships in the Open Division from May 28-31. USA Volleyball considers the event as the national championship for the sport of volleyball in the United States.
During the training sessions in Dallas, the coaching staff will divide the 36 players into three teams of 12 players to compete in the USA Volleyball Open National Championships. Last year, two A2 teams competed in the Open Division, producing a gold and bronze medal. Former Lady Vol Nikki Fowler was a member of the gold-medal winning Blue squad.
A 5-11 outside hitter, Jeter was an All-SEC First Team and American Volleyball Coaches Association Honorable Mention All-American selection in 2010. The rising senior from Solon, Ohio, was second on the team with 340 total kills, an average of 2.98 putaway per set and a .304 hitting percentage during her junior campaign.
Cikra will join the A2 team as an opposite hitter. Standing at 6-4, the rising junior came on strong at the end of 2010 as she begun to play up to her massive potential. In the second round of the NCAA Tournament, the Chagrin Falls, Ohio, native had a breakout performance, posting a career-high 20 kills and hitting at a .459 clip with just three errors in 37 swings. For the season, Cikra tallied 215 putaways and a .298 attack average, in addition to 72 blocks.
After serving as a six-rotation outside hitter for the Lady Vols as a freshman, Robinson made the A2 team as a libero. The 2010 All-SEC Freshman Team selection led Tennessee with 324 digs, good for 2.89 per set which ranked her ninth in the conference. Having been born in 1992, the Bartlett, Ill., product is also eligible to be named to the U.S. Women’s Junior National Team roster which will be announced in early May. That squad will compete at the 2011 FIVB Women’s Junior (Under 20) World Championships held July 21-30 in Peru.
