Coach TeAna Tramel's Volleyball Blog: Spring Olympics and Offseason Workout
At the start of her first offseason at the helm of Nicholls volleyball, head coach TeAna Tramel will be updating fans on the Colonels' offseason progress. First up, Coach T details Nicholls offseason workout programs and gets the program's Spring Olympics underway.
Hello Colonel Volleyball Fans,
Welcome to our first blog of spring. Spring has already been a busy time for colonel volleyball. Myself and my assistant Enjoli Ford have been on the road recruiting as well as, in the gym and weight room with our team getting ready for the fall. Speaking of recruiting our Signing Day is April 3 and we look to sign several stellar student-athletes.
Now back to what is going on with Volleyball this spring..We are currently in our 8 hour a week segment of season. The girls are working hard three days a week in the weight room with Coach Brian Thomas and Coach Kat Harrel. They are up every morning at 5:45 getting stronger! We are very fortunate to have an amazing strength and conditioning staff that pushes our athletes to be the best they can, and for that we thank them.
On Tuesday and Thursday our players are in the gym for some individual positional training and a some team work. The goal for this spring is to go back and re-teach the skills we tried to implement in the fall. There is a lot more attention to detail and how we do things, we are in full training mode.
The players are adapting well to the new techniques and system and now have a better understanding of what and why we did the things in the fall. As some of you might know, the spring is difficult time for fall sports. There is not as much structure and a lot more free time.
So to make the spring a little more fun and add the competition side we have started a thing we like to call, "Colonel Spring Olympics". What this entails is a series of 12 events over the duration of our spring season. The players compete in the these events and at the conclusion of spring ball we declare a winner and yes a loser. The winner this year gets the following:
1. Choice of seat on the bus (this is huge to our team, there is a prime seat in the back of the bus that is three seats wide, and yes, far away from the coaches that ride in the front of the bus :))
2. Choice of beverage on the road (we have team rule of no soda, only water)
3. Probably the best thing is the winner gets 1 morning off from a practice session, and/or weights during pre-season
4. Oh yeah and a gold medal!!
On the flip side of things; the loser of Spring Olympics also gets a prize (this is a secret so don't tell anyone) they get to carry their award to and from every practice/meal/meeting during preseason. This award gets passed down from season to season...
Now that you know about our spring Olympics, last Thursday we competed in our first event, a pillow sack race..
The players were notified Wednesday night to bring a pillow case with them to practice..You can only imagine the text messages and phone calls my staff and I received to find out what for..
At the end of practice they all lined up and raced from volleyball court end line back..it was hilarious..a few are very smart and ran, others hopped, and some just couldn't stand up.
The winner was Sophomore Nancy Taylor, and no, she did not cheat. In Last place was Kailey McNamara, who, in her defense, is one of our tallest players and also had the smallest pillow case. Oh yeah and she fell...a lot :)
Take a look at the footage...

The players do not know the next event until they get to practice but let me tell you there are some good ones!!
Stay tuned for the next update on Colonel Volleyball and our Spring Olympics!
