The Gophers won the first two sets, 30-28, 25-19, but fell in the next three, 10-25, 12-25 and 11-15.

Hurricanes senior is school’s all-time leader in kills

 

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – Lane Carico of the University of Miami has been selected as one of 10 finalists for this year’s Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award for volleyball. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence – community, classroom, character and competition. 

 

Carico, an outside hitter from Manhattan Beach, Calif., became Miami’s all-time leader in kills during the second set of the Hurricanes’ 3-0 win over Duke on Sunday, Oct. 2. The 2010 AVCA Third Team All-America player currently has 1,532 kills throughout her career. She also ranks second all-time in points (1,733), third in kills per set (3.75), third in digs (1,505), fourth in service aces (109) and eighth in sets played (409).

 

On the campaign, Carico has helped the Hurricanes to their first-ever regular season ranking with the Canes getting as high as No. 20 in Week Five. Carico is fourth in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) in kills with 186 (3.44 per set), fifth in digs with 233 (4.31 per set) and fourth in points with 212.5 (3.94 per set). She’s also second on the team with 15 service aces.

 

The finalists were chosen by a media committee from the list of 30 candidates announced in August. Nationwide fan voting begins immediately to determine the winner. Fans are encouraged to vote on either the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award website or the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award Facebook fan page through November 21. OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – Texas senior All-America middle blocker Rachael Adams has been named one of the 10 finalists for the 2011 Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award in collegiate volleyball. The award recognizes volleyball student-athletes who excel in the four areas of excellence – community, classroom, character and competition.

 

To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in all four categories.

 

An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School, the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.

 

The finalists were chosen by a media committee from the list of 30 candidates announced in August. Nationwide fan voting begins immediately to determine the winner. In the classroom, Adams has been a leader for the Longhorns as she works toward her degree in advertising and takes classes in Texas' creative sequence. A two-time Academic All-Big 12 selection and 2009 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District Second Team pick, Adams is a four-time Big 12 Commissioner's Honor Roll selection.

 

In 2010, Adams was an AVCA All-America First Team and Volleyball Magazine All-America First Team choice. She was a member of the 2010 NCAA Austin Regional All-Tournament Team and garnered AVCA All-Central Region First Team lauds. As a junior, Adams ranked No. 1 in the NCAA statistics with a .443 hitting percentage, while leading the Horns and ranking sixth in the Big 12 with 1.18 blocks per-set

Hill (Portland, Ore./Portland Christian HS) is Pepperdine’s first ever top-10 finalist for the award. Miranda Ayim of women’s basketball and baseball’s Nick Gaudi both were honored as top-30 candidates during the 2009 season.

Hill, a two-time AVCA All-American honorable mention, has continued to shine in 2011. She currently leads the Waves and ranks second in the West Coast Conference with a 3.71 kills/set average. The senior earned her second-consecutive WCC Player of the Week award on Oct. 3. Hill catapulted the Waves to a 3-2 victory over Saint Mary’s on Sept. 29 with a career-high 25 kills. The week prior, she averaged 3.67 kills/set versus both Portland and Gonzaga. She tallied a team-best 33 total kills in two matches, highlighted by her 10th kill of the contest versus Portland which counted as career kill #1,000.

 

Pepperdine (11-5, 5-0 WCC) plays at Santa Clara on Thursday, Oct. 13, before a road match at San Francisco on Saturday, Oct. 15.
