Texas Volleyball earns No. 1 overall seed in NCAA Championship

The fifth-ranked Texas Volleyball team has earned the No.1 national seed in the 2011 NCAA Tournament.

AUSTIN, Texas -- The fifth-ranked Texas volleyball team will make its 28th NCAA Tournament appearance this coming weekend when it hosts the first and second rounds of the 2011 NCAA Tournament at Gregory Gymnasium.

Texas (22-4, 15-1 Big 12) earned the No. 1 seed in the tournament and the top seed in the Lexington Regional. It marks the first time that Texas has received the top-seed in the tourney since the NCAA began seeding the top-16 teams. The Horns will welcome Arizona, Michigan State and UT’s first round opponent, Texas State to Gregory Gymnasium on Friday and Saturday, Dec. 2 and 3 as the Horns host for the eighth straight season.

 

Arizona will face Michigan State on Friday at 4:30 p.m. and the Longhorns will take on Texas State at 7 p.m. after the conclusion of the first match. The winners of the two matches will meet on Saturday at 7 p.m. Central

Tickets to the NCAA Tournament first and second rounds can currently be purchased at TexasBoxOffice.com or the Bellmont Hall ticket office. All-session ticket packages are $6 (students), $12 (reserved general admission) and $20 (reserved seating). Individual session tickets will go on sale beginning Friday.

The winner of the Austin Sub-regional will advance to the Lexington Regional, where it will face the winner of the College Station, Texas Sub-Regional in the NCAA Regional semifinals on Dec. 9.

Texas earned an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament after winning the Big 12 Conference, and was one of seven teams from the Big 12 e to earn an invite. UT is joined by fourth-seeded Iowa State, 16^th-seeded Texas A&M, Baylor, Kansas State, Missouri and Oklahoma in the 64-team draw.

The Longhorns have won their last 14 matches, including 28-straight on their home floor.

 

 

Texas State (27-7, 15-1 Southland) earned an automatic bid to the tournament after winning the Southland Conference Championship. Arizona (19-11, 11-10 Pacific 12) gained an at-large bid to the tournament after finishing seventh in its conference. Michigan State (21-10, 10-10 Big Ten) earned an at-large bid after finishing sixth in its league.

In 2010, Texas earned its seventh straight bid to the NCAA Championship and advanced to the national semifinals for the third straight season.

Texas has been selected to host first and second rounds of the NCAA Tournament 22 times and UT is 48-9 all-time in NCAA matches played in Austin. Texas is undefeated in first-round contests at 27-0.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The Southeastern Conference Champion and 14th-seeded University of Tennessee volleyball team won’t be traveling for the first and second rounds of the 2011 NCAA Tournament, as Thompson-Boling Arena will host the opening rounds of the event over Dec. 1-2.

"We're very excited about being seeded and we're very excited about being in the NCAA Tournament," Lady Vol head volleyball coach Rob Patrick said. "Obviously, we knew we were going to be in the tournament after winning the SEC Championship, but to see your name come up on the board andknow who you are playing, it makes it more real. So we are excited about being able to host, playing in front of our fans and getting on to the first step of an NCAA Championship."

Having secured an automatic berth in the tournament by winning the league crown, Tennessee (27-3) will face off against Duke (21-8) at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday in the opening round after Ohio State (19-14) takes on Middle Tennessee State (21-11) at 4:30 p.m. The winner of both contests will move on to a second-round showdown at 7 p.m. on Friday for the right to advance to the NCAA Regional in Gainesville, Fla., Dec. 9-10.

"The first and second rounds are going to be very, very tough," Patrick said. "Duke has a very experienced team, so like this whole year, we are going to be playing against a team that is going to have a lot more experience on the court. Ohio State is coming out of one of the toughest conferences in the country and they were in the Sweet 16 last year, so they have been very successful. Middle Tennessee is always a dangerous team. They are a team that is kind of known as a giant killer and beat BCS schools on a regular basis."

This is the fourth time in program history that Tennessee has been seeded; with UT’s best national ranking of No. 11 coming last year, improving upon the two previous seeds of No. 12 in 2004 and No. 15 in 2005.

 

 

The NCAA Tournament bid marks UT's 13th all-time, fourth straight and seventh in the last eight years. The Lady Vols are 12-12 in their 13 NCAA Tournament appearances.

Tennessee's seed is a direct result of the success it achieved against a tough schedule, as the squad enters the postseason with a 6-2 record over fellow tournament teams. In addition to sweeping the season series' againstevery SEC school except Kentucky, the Lady Vols also knocked off Dayton, Louisville, Ohio, Villanova and Virginia Tech in non-conference action.

"We always try and prepare our team in our preseason tournaments to be ready for SEC play," Patrick said. "Looking long term, we also try to prepare them for the NCAA Tournament. We try and play very strong teams and teams with different types of offensive and defensive systems. I feel really comfortable with where our team is, who we played this year and being able to be successful against teams we are going to be seeing."

The Orange and White are one of three SEC teams selected to participate in the tournament and the only squad seeded, as Florida and Kentucky will also compete in postseason play. The Gators square off with future SEC member Missouri (21-12) in the opening round at Northern Iowa, who earned the No. 6 national seed. Kentucky will open against Dayton (26-5) in College Station,Texas.

The Big Ten Conference led all conferences with eight teams selected. The Big 12 Conference and the Pacific-12 Conference both have seven teams in the tournament.

DAYTON, Ohio – University of Dayton volleyball will make its fifth consecutive appearance in the NCAA Championship on Thursday, Dec. 1 against Kentucky in College Station, Texas. First serve is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. ET from Reed Arena. 

Host, No. 16 Texas A&M, will face Lipscomb in the first round. Winners of the first round will play on Dec. 2 for the right to advance to the Lexington Regional in Lexington, Ky. 

 

 

No. 1 Texas is the top-seeded team in the Lexington Region, while No. 9 UCLA and No. 8 Penn State round out the seeded teams in the Region.

Dayton (25-6) will make its eighth appearance in the NCAA Championship after earning the Atlantic 10’s automatic bid as three-peat regular season and tournament champions. The Flyers hold a 3-7 all-time record in the tournament and have advanced to the second round in back-to-back seasons. 

Kentucky (25-6) earned a seventh consecutive bid to the tournament, the school’s 13th appearance overall. The Wildcats are one of three Southeastern Conference teams in the field of 64 – all three came out of the Eastern Division (Tennessee, Florida and Kentucky). 

In the last meeting between Dayton and Kentucky on Sept. 14, 2002 in Lexington, Ky., the Flyers swept the Wildcats in straight sets during the Kentucky Conference Challenge. Dayton leads the all-time series, 2-1.

TULSA, Okla. – Tulsa will play Oklahoma at 7 p.m. CT on Friday, Dec. 2, in the first round of the 2011 NCAA Division I Women’s Volleyball Championship at USC’s Galen Center in Los Angeles.

 

The Conference USA Champion Golden Hurricane (27-6, 18-2 C-USA) will meet the Sooners (21-11, 8-8 Big 12) for the second straight season in the NCAA Tournament. OU eliminated TU in the second round last season in Norman.

 

Top-ranked and No. 7 national seed USC (25-4, 20-2 Pac 12) is the host school, and will face Ivy League Champion Yale (18-6, 12-2 Ivy League) in the opening round. The winners of the opening round matches will meet on Dec. 3 for the right to advance to the Honolulu Regional.

 

 

 

Tulsa won the Conference USA championship for the second straight year and is making its second NCAA Tournament appearance in a row. TU is led by C-USA Player of the Year Tyler Henderson and C-USA Libero of the Year Jessica Adams, as well as all-conference performers Diana Silva and Kellie Culberson. The Hurricane has won 21 of its last 23 matches heading into the postseason.

 

Seven of Tulsa’s 2011 opponents are among the 64-team field, including No. 3-seed Illinois and No. 12-seed Florida State. The Golden Hurricane has a 4-3 record against teams in the NCAA postseason, with wins over Albany, Middle Tennessee State, North Carolina and North Dakota State. Kentucky rounds out TU’s regular season opponents in the field.

Illini host Central Michigan in first round Friday at Huff Hall

 

Champaign, Ill. – Illinois earned the No. 3 overall national seed for the 2011 NCAA Tournament. The Illini will host first and second round games at Huff Hall on Friday and Saturday as the road to San Antonio begins.

 

Illinois, who finished the regular season 27-4 and tied for second in the Big Ten, will host Central Michigan, the Mid-American Conference Tournament winner. The Chippewas finished the regular season 19-13 and are one of four teams from the MAC to make thefield.

 

The Illini and CMU willface-off at 7 pm on Friday, Dec. 2. The other first-round match-up featuresWestern Kentucky (31-3) and Marquette (23-10) at 4:30 p.m. The winners meet in the second round on Saturday, Dec. 3 at 7 p.m. The Hilltoppers entered the AVCA Coaches poll this past week at No. 24 and are coming to Champaign for the second straight year, having lost to Cincinnati in the 2010 first round at Champaign. WKU is the champion of the Sun Belt Conference, who also advanced Middle Tennessee into the field. Marquette is one of three teams from the Big EastConference in the tournament, joining Louisville and Cincinnati.

 

 

 

All-session tickets will be on sale starting at 9 a.m. Monday morning at the University of Illinois Athletic Ticket Office or by calling 866-Illini-1. Ticket prices are $16 for reserved seats, $12 for general admission or $8 for student/youth general admission.Single-session tickets will only be available at the door and are $8 for the general public and $6 for students/youth.

 

Illinois played 21 matches against 14 teams who advanced to the tournament, including a tournament-leading eight from the Big Ten. The Big 12 and the Pac-12 each advanced seven teams to the post-season. Of those eight Big Ten teams, five received national seeds, including three in the top five – No. 2 Nebraska, No. 3 Illinois, No. 5 Purdue, No. 8 Penn State and No. 13 Minnesota. Michigan, Michigan State and Ohio State also received at-large bids. The other Illinois opponents who made the field were Dayton, Louisville, Cincinnati, Middle Tennessee, Tennessee, and Tulsa.

 

The Illini are the top seed in the Gainesville, Fla., Bracket. The semifinals of that regional on the University of Florida campus are Friday Dec. 9 at 4 and 6 p.m. CT with the championship shown live on ESPNU HD at 6 p.m. on Saturday Dec. 10. The National Semifinals are Dec. 15 at 6 and 8:30 p.m. CT in San Antonio, Texas, with the championship game also at the Alamodome on Dec. 17 at 7:30 p.m. Those matches will be shown live on ESPN2.

 

The other seeded teams in the Gainesville bracket are No. 6 Northern Iowa, No. 11 Stanford and No. 14 Tennessee. Illinois could meet Tennessee in a possible regional semifinal. The Illini defeated the Lady Vols in four sets at the this year’s State Farm Illini Classic.

 

The top four national seeds were No. 1 Texas, who will compete in the Lexington, Ky., Regional; No. 2 Nebraska, who will compete in the Honolulu Regional; No. 3 Illinois in the Gainesville, Fla., Regional, and No. 4 Iowa State in the Minneapolis Regional. This marks the highest national seed for the Illini.

USC Women's Volleyball Hosts First and Second Rounds of 2011 NCAA Tournament

 

 

 

The USC women’s volleyball team, ranked No. 1 in the latest AVCA national poll, received the No. 7 seed in the 2011 NCAA Women’s Volleyball Tournament.  USC will host first and second round action next weekend at the Galen Center.

The Pac-12 Conference champion Women of Troy (25-4) will face the champions of the Ivy League, Yale (18-6), on Friday (December 2) at 7 p.m. The other first-round match at 5 p.m. on Friday will feature Tulsa (27-6), the Conference USA champions, against Oklahoma (21-11).   The Sooners finished the season in fifth place in the Big 12 Conference.

The winners of each match will play the second-round match on Saturday (December 3) at 7 p.m.  Saturday’s winner will advance to the Honolulu Regional.

All three matches next weekend will be broadcast live through a free video webcast on usctrojans.com.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Colorado State University, the 2011 Mountain West volleyball regular-season and tournament champion, will face the University of Oregon in the First Round of the 2011 NCAA Volleyball Tournament.  The Rams earned the league’s automatic bid to the tourney and are the only MW team in this year’s national postseason event.

 

CSU will play Oregon (21-9) on Thursday, Dec. 1 for the opportunity to face the winner of Western Athletic Conference champion Hawai’i (29-1) against Big Sky champion Northern Colorado (22-8) in the Second Round of the Honolulu sub-regional.  All First and Second Round matches will be played at Stan Sheriff Center on the campus of the University of Hawai’i-Manoa. Match times have not been set as of press time.  The winner of the Second Round match will advance to the Honolulu Regional, also hosted by Hawai’i.

 

 

 

Colorado State, under the direction of head coach Tom Hilbert, is making its 17th consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance and 23rd overall. The Rams finished the regular season 23-5 overall and 12-2 in conference play. CSU picked up a big non-conference win early in the season on Friday, Sept. 2 with a come-from-behind 3-2 victory over then-No. 5 Nebraska at Moby Arena.

 

Colorado State has advanced all 13 seasons since the Mountain West formed in 1999.  Six of the eight league institutions have advanced to the NCAA Division I Tournament at some point in program history with five advancing as a Mountain West member.

Wildcats travel to College Station, Texas, for opening rounds

 

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Following its fourth 20-win season in the last seven seasons, a top-20 national ranking for six straight weeks and a runner-up finish in the Southeastern Conference the Kentucky volleyball team was selected for a school-record seventh consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance it was announced Sunday evening. UK will travel to the College Station, Texas, Regional for the opening rounds and will face Dayton to begin the tournament at 5:30 p.m. ET on Thursday, Dec. 1.

“We’re really excited to be in the tournament,” UK coach Craig Skinner said. “I think it’s a wide open tournament this year and there are a lot of really good teams. I thought we’d be in, and I’m happy about the year to this point. It’s a new season, and I’m looking forward to getting started down at A&M.”

The host Aggies drew the No. 16 overall seed, and the fourth team in the region is the Atlantic Sun Champion in Lipscomb. Kentucky has never faced any of the squads during NCAA competition and it will mark the first post-season appearance in College Station in school history.

 

UK is now one of just 16 teams to earn a spot in the NCAA Tournament in seven consecutive seasons, and joins Florida as the lone SEC teams to achieve the feat. The SEC received three bids into the tournament with Tennessee joining the Wildcats and Gators.

 

Kentucky has a balanced offensive attack with six players registering between 2.20 and 3.13 kills per set. Skinner’s Wildcats are ranked among the SEC’s leaders in every offensive category including kills, assists and hitting percentage. Junior setter Christine Hartmann is the driver of the offensive unit, passing out 11.10 assists per stanza while also laying down 1.10 kills per set.

 

 

 

UK’s defensive unit ranks as the leaders in the conference. UK charts more than 2.50 blocks per set, led by 1.08 from senior Becky Pavan. Kentucky also boasts the league’s top libero with junior Stephanie Klefot averaging nearly 4.75 digs per set.

 

The Wildcats will need to navigate the College Station Region to return to the friendly confines of Memorial Coliseum for the Regionals Dec. 9-10.

 

Dayton owns a 25-6 overall record and is making its third consecutive appearance into the NCAA Tournament and will be UK’s first-round matchup. The Flyers have advanced to the second round in consecutive seasons. Dayton is led by 4.53 kills per set from Rachel Krabacher and 1.43 blocks per set from Megan Campbell.

 

Texas A&M earned the tournament’s No. 16 overall seed and the right to host the opening rounds of action in College Station. The Aggies own a 22-7 overall record and a 10-2 clip at home. Lipscomb earned the Atlantic Sun’s automatic berth into the tournament after capturing the conference’s tournament title. The Lady Bisons have advanced to the NCAA Tournament in three consecutive seasons and four of the last five years. Lipscomb owns a 20-10 overall record for the season and are paced by a trio of players who register 3.10 kills per set or higher led by Kaycee Green’s 3.52.

Kentucky's Memorial Coliseum will play host to the NCAA Regionals Dec. 9-10. UK is one of four sites selected for Sweet 16 and Elite Eight matchups with one team advancing to the Final Four in San Antonio, Texas, from the Lexington Region. Opening night matches are scheduled for 5 and 7 p.m. ET. Saturday’s final is set for a 4:30 p.m. ET first serve.

Tickets are now on sale through the UK Ticket Office. All-Session Tickets are reserved for all ages at $14. General Admission tickets for adults are priced at $12 and students or seniors' general admission is slated for $8.

Single session tickets are priced at $8 for reserved for all ages. General admission for adults is priced at $7, with students and seniors priced at $5. Youth single session tickets are $4.
