UNM Assistant Volleyball Coach Lisa Beauchene Named Top 30 Under 30

LEXINGTON, Ky. – The University of New Mexico’s assistant volleyball coach Lisa Beauchene was recently named a recipient of the American Volleyball Coaches Association’s (AVCA) prestigious Thirty Under 30 Award.
Beauchene just completed her sixth season as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator with the Lobo volleyball program. While at UNM she has helped lead the Lobos to two NCAA Tournament appearances, coached six AVCA All-Americans, 2 ESPN/CoSida Academic All-Americans and the team has received five AVCA Team Academic awards under her guidance.
"I'm thrilled and honored to be in the 2012 AVCA Top 30 Under 30 Award class with the other talented coaches,” said Beauchene. “Being selected for the Top 30 Under 30 has been my goal in coaching since it was introduced three years ago. It makes me feel proud of the hard work I've done for the University of New Mexico. I think it's a great reflection of the successful direction this Lobo Volleyball program has gone and will continue to go. I would like to thank Jeff Nelson for being a great mentor to me in coaching and to the American Volleyball Coaches Association for creating this award and honoring the hard working coaches under 30."
This award was created in 2009 to honor up-and-coming coaching talent at all levels of the sport. To qualify for the award nominees had to be 30 years old or younger in 2011. The list of winners will be featured in the upcoming March edition of Coaching Volleyball 2.0.
“I love this award,” said AVCA Executive Director, Kathy DeBoer, “And, even more, I love how our membership has embraced this award. The number of nominees now ranks in the hundreds, and they are coming from all parts of our membership, bright, hard-working, passionate, talented young volleyball coaches!”
A 2005 graduate of Sacramento State, Beauchene established herself as one of the top players in Hornet history from 2000-03. She was a four-time all-Big Sky Conference selection, including a three-time unanimous first team choice and the league's MVP during her senior season.
The Auburn, Wash., native also became the first player in Big Sky history to be named Tournament MVP on three occasions. In addition, Beauchene received AVCA All-Pacific Region honors in 2003, the first Hornet to be named all-region since 1995.
Beauchene, a setter for Sac State, remains the school's all-time leader in career hitting percentage (.348) and triple-doubles (18) while also ranking third in assists (5,153), ninth in digs (1,417), and 10th in service aces (107). She never missed a match during her four-year career, starting 131 consecutive contests, and led the Hornets to the Big Sky regular season and/or tournament championship each of her four seasons.
Of the thirty recipients of the Thirty Under 30 Award, 19 are head coaches and 11 are assistant coaches. Ten are NCAA Division I women’s coaches, four coach NAIA squads, four are NCAA Division III and another four for high school. There are also three NCAA Division II recipients along with three Club coaches and two Two-Year College coaches.
