This Week in Pac-12 Volleyball

Seven Pac-12 teams earned NCAA Tournament bids, tied for the most of any conference in the country. STANFORD received the league’s automatic berth after claiming the Pac-12 crown, the program’s 15th all-time league title and the sixth in the last seven years

... Five of the Conference’s seven tournament teams are among the top-16 seeded teams. The Cardinal lead the way as the No. 2 seed in the tournament, OREGON is the fifth seed, its highest-ever seeding. USC is the No. 6 seed, UCLA is the No. 7 seed and WASHINGTON is the No. 13 seed

... Also participating in the postseason event are ARIZONA STATE and CALIFORNIA. It is the Sun Devils’ first tournament appearance since 2006

... The Bruins go into the tournament as the defending NCAA Champions, while the Trojans look to make a third-straight trip to the national semifinals

... The Conference has sent at least six teams to the NCAA Tournament for 13-consecutive years ... There have been 19 upsets by Pac-12 teams so far this season

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - The Pac-12 Conference announced its postseason volleyball awards today. OREGON senior outside hitter Alaina Bergsma has been named the Pac-12 Conference Volleyball Player of the Year, USC outside hitter Samantha Bricio has been honored as the Pac-12 Conference Freshman of the Year, and STANFORD’s John Dunning was voted Pac-12 Conference Volleyball Coach of the Year, Commissioner Larry Scott announced Tuesday. In addition, USC junior Natalie Hagglund was voted the Pac-12 Conference Libero of the Year for the second-consecutive year, while OREGON junior Lauren Plum was tabbed the Pac-12 Conference Setter of the Year.

PLAYER OF THE YEAR -- ALAINA BERGSMA, OREGON

Bergsma is the first-ever Oregon Duck to be named the Conference’s Player of the Year. The Chandler, Ariz., native has helped lead the Ducks to a second-place showing in the Pac-12, the program’s best-ever finish in league play. She leads the Pac-12 with 4.91 kills and 5.40 points per set, ranking fifth in both categories in the NCAA. She also ranks eighth in the Conference with a .328 hitting percentage. She has posted the Pac-12’s top-two kills performances, tallying a career-high 32 in the four-set win over Washington State on Nov. 17, one day after posting 31 in the five-set thriller at Washington.  Bergsma was named Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Week three times this season. Bergsma was a second team AVCA All-American last year and is making her second-career appearance on the All-Pac-12 team.

FRESHMAN OF THE YEAR -- SAMANTHA BRICIO, USC

Bricio is the second Trojan in three years and fifth all-time to be named the Conference’s Freshman of the Year. The Guadalajara, Mexico native leads the Pac-12 in services aces per set (0.34), while also ranking fifth in kills (4.05) and points (5.40) per set. She was named the Pac-12 Freshman of the Week five times this season, also earned Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Week honors on Oct. 8. Bricio has helped the Trojans to third place in the Pac-12 and a No. 6 seed in the upcoming NCAA Tournament.

SETTER OF THE YEAR -- LAUREN PLUM, OREGON

A native of Poway, Calif., Plum leads the nation in assists per set with an average of 13.25. A starter in every match, she has helped to lead the Ducks to its most successful season in the history of the program, including a second-place showing in the Pac-12 and a No. 5 seeding in the NCAA Tournament, both program bests. She posted a Pac-12-high 75 assists in the five-set victory at Washington on Nov. 16 and was named the AVCA National Player of the Week on Sept. 24. Under her direction, the Ducks lead the nation with 15.90 kills per set, while also posting the best assists per set average in the NCAA (14.88 aps).

LIBERO OF THE YEAR -- NATALIE HAGGLUND, USC

Junior Natalie Hagglund was voted the Pac-12 Libero of the Year for the second-consecutive year. It is the second year the honor has been awarded. She has posted three of the top-four single-match digs totals in the Pac-12 this season and is the only player to tally over 40, putting up 44 digs in the four-set upset of then-No. 1 Stanford on Nov. 15. The Encinitas, Calif., native leads the Pac-12 with 5.09 digs per set.

COACH OF THE YEAR -- JOHN DUNNING, STANFORD

John Dunning earns the Coach of the Year honor for the fourth time in his career. Dunning has led the Cardinal to the team’s 15th all-time league title, its sixth in the last seven years, and a No. 2 seed in the NCAA Tournament. Stanford was ranked No. 1 in the country according to the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Coaches poll for three-consecutive weeks this season from Oct. 29-Nov. 18 and was the only team in the country to receive all 60 first-place votes (Nov. 5 and Nov. 12). Stanford went 16-0 to start the season, the best start in Conference play under Dunning, and its 22-match winning streak from Sept. 7-Nov. 8 was the program’s longest in a season under Dunning. The Cardinal has reached the 20-win plateau in each of Dunning’s 12 seasons, the longest such streak in program history dating back to 1976.

Camille Saxton Named Pac-12 Honorable Mention 

 

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. – Oregon State volleyball’s Camille Saxton was named to the Pac-12 Conference’s Honorable Mention team on Tuesday when the league announced its yearly postseason awards.

 

Saxton, a native of Balzac, A.B., Canada, earned her second honorable mention after being recognized at the conclusion of her junior season. This year, as a senior, she played in all 32 matches for the Beavers and led the team in kills (414), attacks (1,393) and service aces (31) while ranking third in digs (195) and fourth in blocks (55).

 

Her 414 kills ranks as the fourth-best mark ever by an Oregon State senior while her 1,393 attacks are second.

 

She concluded her Oregon State career 11^th in school history with 1,101 kills. Saxton is also fifth with 3,637 attacks, 12^th with 1,307 points, 14^th with 100 service aces and 25^th with in digs (662) and assisted blocks (160).

 

The honor is her third of the year from the Pac-12. She was named the league’s offensive player of the week on Sept. 9, and last week, was named all-academic honorable mention for the third consecutive season.

 

Saxton is the first Oregon State player to earn back-to-back postseason honors since Rachel Rourke in 2008 and 2009.

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - The Pac-12 Conference office announced today the Pac-12 Volleyball Players of the Week for the week of Nov. 19-25. OREGON’s Katherine Fischer was named the Conference’s Offensive Player of the Week, ASU’s Stephanie Preach was voted the Defensive Player of the Week and Stanford’s Jordan Burgess was tabbed the league’s Freshman of the Week.

 

Oregon senior Katherine Fischer (Los Altos, Calif.) had a career high night in her final regular season match for the Ducks. Fischer tallied a .652 hitting percentage, against the Beavers, improving from her previous career best set in 2010. She recorded a season-best 15 kills in the three-set match. She also totaled six kills and two blocks in the 3-0 sweep over Oregon State. Fischer was active in the 3-0 sweep over No. 7 UCLA earning a .154 hitting percentage, seven digs and nine kills. With the win over the Beavers, Oregon clinched a best-ever second-place finish in the Pac-12.

 

ASU libero Stephanie Preach (Phoenix, Ariz.) tallied 46 digs on the weekend leading the Sun Devils to a 2-0 weekend in wins over Arizona and upset over No. 5 Washington. She averaged 5.75 digs per set on the weekend. Her performance this weekend totaled her season digs to 598, just 12 digs shy of her career-best set in 2011. In the match against UW, Preach was just one dig shy of her match-high of 30 digs set against USC earlier this season. With the two wins on the weekend ASU earned their first 20-win season since 1993.

 

Cardinal outside hitter, Jordan Burgess (Fort Myers, Fla.) guided Stanford to wins over Colorado and California this week to finish the season with a 27-3 overall record and a 19-1 mark in the Pac-12. Burgess averaged 2.57 kills, 2.71 digs and 3.29 points per set with a .283 hitting percentage in the two matches. The freshman tallied 10 kills with a .333 hitting percentage and was just one dig short of a double-double. Against the Golden Bears, Burgess totaled eight kills, 10 digs and two aces.

 

Weekly awards have been selected every week of the season since the Conference began sponsoring women’s volleyball in 1986. It is the second year the Pac-12 has announced an offensive, defensive and rookie honoree.

 

Seven Pac-12 teams were selected for the 2012 Division I NCAA Women’s Volleyball Championship, including five teams earning a top-16 seed. The Cardinal earned the No. 2 seed and will host Jackson State in the first round on Friday. The winner will face the winner of the Western Kentucky- Loyola Marymount matchup on Saturday. The Ducks grabbed the No. 5 seed and will play host to Northern Colorado, as well as the Pepperdine vs. Dayton match on Friday. The winners of these two matches will battle on Saturday. Arizona State is making its first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2006 after finishing the season with a 20-13 record. ASU travels to Provo, Utah to take on Oklahoma on Friday with the winner facing the winner of No. 12-seed BYU and New Mexico State the following day.

Utah Volleyball Concludes Second Pac-12 Season

The Utah volleyball team concluded its second Pac-12 Conference season with a 14-19 overall record and a 5-15 mark, good for ninth place in the most competitive volleyball league in the country.

           

Utes In the NCAA Blocking Ranks: Utah finished sixth in the NCAA and second in the Pac-12’s latest statistical rankings with a 3.00 block-per-set average as a team. Including league-games only, Utah improved to second in the league with 2.94 blocks per set during Pac-12 matches.

 

Chelsey Doubles Up: Sophomore outside hitter Chelsey Schofield (Provo, Utah) was Utah’s top attacker in 2012 with a team-high average of 3.19 kills per set and has also chipped in 2.36 digs per set for the Ute defense. Schofield led Utah with 3.19 kills per set this season and was third on the squad with 2.39 digs per set. Her 1,147 attempts are the 10th-most in a single season in school history.

 

Reaching Redd: Junior middle blocker Erin Redd (Spanish Fork, Utah) turned in a .349 hitting percentage this season, the fifth-highest mark for a single season in school history and is currently hitting .324 over her career, which would land her third on the school’s career list. Redd is already ninth in school history with 368 block assists and needs just four more to pass Teresa McCabe (371 from 1991-94) for seventh. Redd owns 391 career total blocks and needs just six more to overtake Karolina Bartkowiak (396 from 2007-10) for 10th place in the school record book. She needs just nine more total blocks to become the 10th member of Utah’s 400-block club. Redd has totaled 820 career kills and needs 180 more to become the 14th member of Utah’s 1,000-kill club. Redd set a new school five-set match record with 13 block assists on Aug. 24 at Utah State.

 

Bailey Balling: Sophomore middle blocker Bailey Bateman (Hooper, Utah) finished ninth in blocking in the NCAA’s statistical rankings and was second in the Pac-12 statistics with an average 1.53 blocks per set overall. In league matches, Bateman ranked second in the conference with a 1.52 block-per-set average. With 182 block assists this season, Bateman turned in the third-highest single-season total in school history. Bateman took over fifth on Utah’s single-season total blocks chart with 188.

 

Miss 1,000: Junior outside hitter Morgan Odale (Star, Idaho) is currently 13th in school history with 1,020 career kills and is already seventh in the Utah record book with 3,141 attempts. Odale also has 96 career aces and needs just four more to become the 14th member of the school’s 100-ace club. She led the team and was second in the Pac-12 with 0.33 aces per set and was third in the league with 0.33 service aces per set during conference matches.

Seven Pac-12 Teams Earn NCAA Volleyball Tournament Bids

 

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - Seven Pac-12 teams earned bids into the 2012 Division I NCAA Women�s Volleyball Championship, the NCAA Volleyball Selection Committee announced today. Five of the Pac-12 teams selected were among the top-16 seeds that were also announced, including No. 2 STANFORD, No. 5 OREGON, No. 6 USC, No. 7 seed UCLA and No. 13 WASHINGTON. The first and second rounds of the NCAA Tournament begin Thursday-Saturday, Nov. 29-Dec. 1.

In addition to the five seeded Pac-12 teams, ARIZONA STATE and CALIFORNIA will also be competing for the 2012 national championship. It is the 13th-consecutive year the Conference has had at least six teams earn NCAA Tournament bids. The seven selections are tied for the most in the country with the Big Ten�s. It is also the most for the Pac-12 since receiving eight selections in 2008.

The 2012 Pac-12 Champion STANFORD Cardinal (27-3) earned the highest seeing of any league team. The No. 2 seed in the Berkeley Regional, the Cardinal will host Jackson State (24-11) in the first round on Friday. The winner of that match will play the winner of the Western Kentucky (32-3)-Loyola Marymount (18-12) matchup on Saturday. Stanford is one of only two teams in the country to earn bids to all 32 NCAA Tournaments.

OREGON (25-4) finished second in the Pac-12 this season, the program�s best-ever finish in the league standings. The fifth seed in the NCAA Tournament, the Ducks will host Northern Colorado (24-10), and Pepperdine (20-11) vs. Dayton (26-4) on Friday in the first round. The winners of those matches play on Saturday for the right to go to Omaha for the regional semifinals.

USC (27-5) is the lone Pac-12 team in the Austin Regional. The No. 5 seed overall, the Trojans have made back-to-back trips to the national semifinals and are looking to go even deeper this season. USC begins its title run hosting Fairfield (22-8) in the first round, with Saint Mary�s (17-10) and San Diego State (23-7) also playing their first-round match at Galen Center on Thursday. The winners play the second-round match on Friday.

Defending NCAA Champion UCLA (22-7) is the seventh seed overall and in the Berkeley Regional. It will also host a first-round match, taking on LIU-Brooklyn (25-7) on Friday. The Bruins are making their 31st all-time NCAA Tournament appearance, only missing the event in 1996. UCLA will host Michigan State (23-9) and San Diego (21-6). The second-round match at Pauley Pavilion is scheduled for Saturday.

The 13th seed and in the Omaha Region, WASHINGTON (23-6) takes on Central Arkansas (30-4), who is making its first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance, in the first round on its home court. The Huskies will also welcome Hawai�i (25-2) and Santa Clara (20-11) on Friday with the winners of the matches playing on Saturday in the second round.

ARIZONA STATE is making its first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2006 and the team�s first appearance under head coach Jason Watson. The Sun Devils finished the season with a 20-13 record, the team�s first 20-win season since 1993. ASU travels to Provo, Utah, to take on Oklahoma (21-10). The winner of that match will take on the winner of No. 12-seed BYU (26-3) and New Mexico State (22-10). The first-round match in Provo is scheduled for Friday, with the second round being played the following day.

Rounding out the list of selections is CALIFORNIA. The Golden Bears finished the season at 15-15 with two notable upsets this season. Battling injuries all season, Cal upended then-No. 6 Hawai�i in Honolulu in five sets early in the 2012 campaign, and then posted a big road victory over then-No. 2 Oregon on Nov. 2. The Bears travel to Ames, Iowa to face North Carolina (25-5) on Thursday. The winner will face the winner of the No. 15-seed Iowa State (20-7)-IPFW (25-6) on Friday.

The national semifinals and championship matches are being held at the KFC Yum! Center in Louisville, Ky. on Dec. 13 and 15. All matches from Louisville will be televised on ESPN2.

Oregon State Volleyball Loses Regular Season Finale

 

CORVALLIS, Ore. – Camille Saxton had nine kills and Becky Defoe tallied 14 digs but the Oregon State volleyball team dropped a three-set decision to No. 6 Oregon Friday night in front of 2,023 fans at Gill Coliseum. Set scores were 12-25, 15-25 and 23-25.

 

The match was the second Civil War presented by Pacific Source, Your Local Ford Stores, Wells Fargo and McDonald’s of the season and concluded the season for the Beavers. After the match, the Beavers honored their five seniors – Ashley Eneliko, Martie Massey, Megan McBride, Alyssa O’Neil and Saxton. All told, the group combined for 19 letters during their tenure.

 

Saxton led the Beavers (14-18 overall, 4-16 Pac-12 Conference) with nine kills in 29 attempts as Oregon State hit .188 as a team. Oregon (25-4, 16-4), meanwhile, hit .311 and was led by Katherine Fischer, who collected 15 kills.

 

Defoe finished with 14 digs and led the Beavers in that category for the 30^th time this season. The junior ended her record-breaking season with 591 digs.

 

Oregon narrowly held the dig advantage, 39 to 34, and had 41 assists to the Beavers’ 29, 25 of which were picked up by McBride. Oregon State had the advantage at the net with nine blocks to seven for Oregon. Arica Nassar accounted for eight blocks, including two solo.

 

McBride tallied her sixth double double of the season after adding 12 digs to go along with her 25 assists.

 

The lead changed hands once during the first set, which Oregon claimed, 25-12. The Ducks hit .303 to .043 for Oregon State as the Beavers managed just five kills during the frame.

 

Oregon took set two, 25-15, after seeing four ties and one lead change. The Beavers improved their hitting percentage to .185 but the Ducks also upped theirs to .483.

 

Set three was a far different story as the Beavers upped their hitting percentage again, to .286, and held Oregon to a .195 clip. OSU managed to tie the set at 21 before Oregon jumped out to a 24-21 lead. OSU pulled to within one before the Ducks put the match away with a 25-23 victory in set three,

The Women of Troy fall in their regular-season finale to cross-town rival UCLA

 

LOS ANGELES – The fourth-ranked USC women’s volleyball team (27-5, 15-5 Pac-12) had its six-match winning streak snapped by No. 7 UCLA (22-7, 14-6) in four sets (19-25, 25-23, 25-17, 25-29) on Friday, Nov. 23, at Pauley Pavilion. The Women of Troy were led by senior opposite hitter KatieFuller who had 18 kills (6e, 40att) and hit .300 with eight digs.

 

The Trojans will finish the Pac-12 season in either a tie for second place or alone in thirdplace depending on the outcome of a match between second-place Oregon and Oregon State.

 

Junior middle blocker Alexis Olgard had 11 kills (3e, 21att) and hit .381 in the match to go with a pair of blocks. Freshman outside hitter Samantha Bricio logged nine kills (10e, 48att) but hit negative for the first time in her career as theBruins put up 17.5 blocks in the match. Sophomore setter Hayley Crone had 39 assists and five kills (0e, 8att, .626) while junior libero Natalie Hagglund led all players with 23 digs.

 

For UCLA, senior Rachael Kidder had 18 kills (10e, 56att, .143) and nine digs while senior Tabi Love finished with 16 kills (5e, 48att, .229). Love had nine kills in the first set alone. Zoe Nightingale had a career-high 14 blocks (three solo) to spur the Bruin defense which held the Trojans to a .178 hitting percentage in the match (53k, 24e, 163att).

 

The Trojans raced out to a 5-1 lead in the opening set when freshman middle blocker Alicia Ogoms and Fuller teamed up to send back an attack by Kidder, but UCLA erased the USC lead as Kidder served up an ace to knot the score at five all. Bricio showed off her serving chops and earned an ace to put the Trojans up, 8-7, and USCnever looked back. The Women of Troy created a five-point gash at 15-10 on a block assist by Olgard and Bricio, but the Bruins responded to get within two points at 19-17 as a Bricio attack went long. Bricio atoned for her error to terminate on a cross-court kill that put USC back on track. Crone dumped her pass from junior outside hitter Sara Shaw to earn a kill before she set Olgard who bounced her attack off the Bruin court for a 23-19 lead. A pair of UCLAerrors closed out USC’s 25-19 first-set win. The Trojans hit .345 in the first frame with 12 kills (2e, 29att) and had four blocks to hold the Bruins to a.100 hitting percentage (14k, 10e).

 

USC had the hot hand top open the second set and rolled out to a 7-2 lead as Bricio went high-hands to notch a kill and force a quick UCLA timeout. The Bruins came within a point on a cross-court kill by Karsta Lowe, but Olgard delivered akill on a quick set before Shaw earned an ace to get the Trojans a three-point lead at 12-9. UCLA responded with a 3-0 run to tie the set for the third time at 12-all on a tip-kill from Nightingale. The Bruins went up by as many as two points at 15-13 on a kill by Kidder, but the Trojans knotted the set at 15-all when Crone dumped a dig to get her fourth kill of the night. Bricio tooled the UCLA block before Shaw went high-hands and sophomore setter Emily Young dumped her pass for a kill to put USC up, 18-16. The Bruins hung in the match and tied the score five more times; the last of which came after a long rally that ended in a kill for Kidder. A pair of USC errors set UCLA up with set point at 24-22. Fuller went cross-court for a kill to save one set point, but Love responded to get a cross-court kill of her own and seal the 25-23 win. The Trojans out-hit the Bruins, .240 to .200, in the second set, but had four service errors and were blocked four times.

 

The Trojans scored the first three points of the third set, but UCLA put a stop to things pretty quick and tied the score at three-all when Bricio was blocked at the net. The Bruins earned points on nine blocks in the third frame and held the Trojans to a .000 hitting rate with 11 kills (11e) on 42 swings. Fuller tried as hard as she could to keep USC in the game and earned seven of her kills in the third set including one she put off the UCLA block to pull the Trojans within a point at 8-7. Bricio blasted a shot off the block to get USC within two at 16-14, but the Bruins continued to put up a big block to keep the Trojans at bay. Bricio went cross-court for a kill to make the score 17-15 for UCLA, but the Bruins were unrelenting and earned blocks on two of the final three rallies to close out a 25-17 win.

 

USC led, 6-4, in the fourth set until the Bruins closed the gap and tied the score at seven-all. UCLA led for a couple of rallies until Shaw went cross-court for a kill andOlgard tipped a quick set to the ground for an 11-10 USC lead. Olgard did it again to push USC in front, 12-11, before Fuller went down the line for one of her kills and another two-point USC lead at 13-11, but UCLA fought back and got the tie score at 16-all when Bricio’s serve went long. From there, it was the Kidder show as she knocked down three straight kills to push the Bruins in front, 20-16. The Trojans cut into the lead by two points with kills from Bricio and Shaw, but untimely errors held USC back as UCLA claimed set point on its 17th block of the night. The Trojans’ last point came on an error by the Bruins before UCLA closed out a 25-19 win. UCLA hit .237 in the fourth set (14k, 5e, 38att) and held USC to a .167 outing with 13 kills (6e, 42att).

 

The Trojans now await selection and seeding in the 2012 NCAA Division I Women’s Volleyball Championships. ESPNU will air the selection show, live, on Sunday, Nov. 25, at 1 p.m. PT. The Women of Troy have advanced to the national semifinal in each of the last two years; three times in the last five seasons.

Italian-Born Setter Signs NLI With Oregon State Volleyball 

 

CORVALLIS, Ore. – Oregon State volleyball head coach Taras Liskevych announced Monday that Italy native Carlotta Oggioni has signed a national letter of intent to join the program starting with the 2013 season.

 

Oggioni hails from Rome and plays in the setter position. She has competed with the Italian junior national team and is currently a member of the Riso Scotti Volley Pavia club team, which plays in the second division in Italy.

 

“We are very excited about having Carlotta here because she has played at a high level and plays in one of the best leagues in the world,” Liskevych said. “She will add a dimension to our team because of her volleyball skill and background. We really feel she will be a great addition to our program. She is an experienced setter and one who will help take us to the next level, particularly in terms of the nuances of our offense.”

 

Oregon State returns home this week for the last two matches of regular season play. The Beavers host USC Tuesday night at 8 p.m. PT in a match scheduled for Pac-12 Oregon. OSU then hosts Oregon in the Civil War presented by Pacific Source, Your Local Ford Stores, Wells Fargo and McDonald’s. That match starts at 8 p.m. Friday and will also be televised on Pac-12 Oregon.

 

The Beavers will honor their five seniors – Ashley Eneliko, Martie Massey, Megan McBride, Alyssa O’Neil and Camille Saxton – at the Civil War match.

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - The Pac-12 Conference office announced today the Pac-12 Volleyball Players of the Week for the week of Nov. 12-18. OREGON’s Alaina Bergsma was named the Conference’s Offensive Player of the Week, USC’s Natalie Hagglund was voted the Defensive Player of the Week and Trojan teammate Samantha Bricio was tabbed the league’s Freshman of the Week.

 

All-American senior Alaina Bergsma (Chandler, Ariz.) logged career highs and the Pac-12’s top-two kill totals of the season last week, helping Oregon to a 1-1 week. Bergsma recorded 31 kills with a .302 hitting percentage, and added 11 digs, in the five-set loss to then-No. 6 Washington in Seattle. She followed up with a 32-kill, 15-digs outing in the four-set victory at Washington State. Her hitting efficiency was even better against the Cougars, hitting at a .452 clip. Her kill tallies were the team’s best since 2009. Bergsma averaged 7.00 kills and 7.44 points per set, while hitting .376 over the two matches. She leads the Conference with 4.91 kills and 5.39 points per set. Last week, she ranked in the top-10 in the country in both categories.

 

USC junior Natalie Hagglund (Encinitas, Calif.) posted a career-high 44 digs in the four-set win and upset of then-No. 1 Stanford. Her total was just one dig shy of the program’s record and the most ever by a Trojan in a four-set match and the most of any Pac-12 player this season. In the five-set win over California, she tallied 19 digs to help the Trojans to a five-set victory. She pushed her total career digs to 1,609 to rank third all-time at USC and currently leads the Pac-12 with 5.01 digs per set.

 

USC outside hitter Samantha Bricio (Guadalajara, Mexico) was an unstoppable force for the Trojans as she carried the Women of Troy to a pair of wins, including an upset of top-ranked Stanford and a five-set victory over California. Bricio led all scorers each night, recording her 10th double-double of the season with 19 kills and a career-high 22 digs against the Cardinal. She also had a pair of service aces in the win to log 21.0 points. Against the Bears, she had 18 kills and two aces, as well as two timely solo blocks to post 22.0 points. On the weekend, she averaged 4.11 kills, 3.44 digs and 4.78 points per set. She ranks fourth in the Pac-12 in kills (4.12) and is the league leader in service aces (0.34).

 

It is the third time this season Bergsma has received the weekly offensive nod and the third of her career. It is Oregon’s 25th weekly honor all-time. It is Hagglund’s third-career defensive honor, all three selections coming this season. It is USC’s 53rd all-time weekly award. Bricio is the freshman of the week for a league-leading fifth time this season.

 

Weekly awards have been selected every week of the season since the Conference began sponsoring women’s volleyball in 1986. It is the second year the Pac-12 has announced an offensive, defensive and rookie honoree.

 

Oregon closes out the regular season with a home match against UCLA on Tuesday, Nov. 20, which will be televised on the Pac-12 Networks, followed by a short trip to visit its traditional rival, Oregon State, on Friday, Nov. 23. USC hits the road for its final two regular-season matches, heading to Oregon State on Tuesday, before heading back to Los Angeles to face the Bruins on Friday, live on the Pac-12 Networks.

Oregon senior Alaina Bergsma was chosen as the league’s Offensive Player of the Week.

 

It is Hagglund’s third-career defensive honor, with all three selections coming this season. It is USC’s 53rd all-time weekly award. Bricio is the freshman of the week selection for a league-leading fifth time, this season.

 

Hagglund (Encinitas, Calif.) posted a career-high 44 digs in the four-set win and upset of then-No. 1 Stanford. Her total was just one dig shy of tying the program’s record for digs in a single match and the most ever by a Trojan in a four-set match; the most of any Pac-12 player this season. She had 15 digs in the first set, alone, and posted five during oneparticularly important rally that supplied USC with a 10-6 lead. USC Volleyball Women of Troy Sign Ebony Nwanebu and Elise Ruddins

The USC women’s volleyball team will add a pair of highly-touted hitters to its roster in 2013 

 

 

LOS ANGELES – The USC women’s volleyball team signed Ebony Nwanebu (Lovejoy HS | Lucas, Texas) and Elise Ruddins (Aliso Niguel HS | Laguna Niguel, Calif.) to National Letters of Intent head coachMick Haley announced on Thursday, Nov. 15. The Women of Troy will add the pair of highly-coveted pin-hitters to their 2013 roster.

 

“We are absolutely thrilled to have signed both of these young ladies,” said Haley. “We view them as two of the absolute best players in the entire country and feel that each of them is able to come inhere and have an immediate impact on our program. It is something special to be able to have two players of this caliber arrive in the same recruiting class. Both Elise and Ebony are players who can play all six rotations and different positions in each rotation. I think it gives us some flexibility that we don’t believe anybody in the rest of the country will have, next year. We are very excited to welcome them to the Trojan Family and can’t wait to see them on campus.”

 

Ruddins is a 6-3 middle blocker who played for Michael Soylular at Laguna Beach Volleyball Club and prepped at Aliso Niguel High School with head coach Peter Butler. She was rated No. 2 among high school recruits as PrepVolleyball.com’s No. 2 Senior Ace. As a junior, Ruddins served as her team’s captain and was named Most Valuable Player of the South Coast League. She was also selected for All-County, All-CIF DII and All-State Team honors. She was also chosen for All-League honors as a sophomore. She most recently helped her club to a third-place finish at the 2012 Las Vegas Classic and first-place finishes in the SCVA Regionals and the 2011 Fiesta Classic.Ruddins is also an accomplished soccer player. She is the niece of USC All-American setter Kim Ruddins (1981-85), a two-time Olympian (1984, ’88) whose No. 3 jersey hangs in the rafters of the Galen Center.

 

“Elise is a true impact player who was moved from middle to the outside,” said Haley. “She was highly effective coming off of one foot and can make a difference in any of the six rotations. It’s unfortunate that she was injured earlier this year because we would have loved to see her get selected for the Under Armour All-American match. We are very excited to have a player of her quality join our team.”

 

Coinciding with her signing, Nwanebu was named a first-team Under Armour All-American on Wednesday. The 6-4 outside hitter played at Texas Advantage Volleyball Club under head coach Ping Cao and prepped at Lovejoy High School under head coach Ryan Mitchell. She is PrepVolleyball.com’s No. 7 Senior Ace and has twice been named to theLoneStarVolleyball.com All-Texas first team. Nwanebu recently led her club to a silver-medal finish at the Junior National Championships and was selected to the all-tournament team. She has also helped her high school to a pair of Texas State titles in the 3A division and was named the tournament MVP as a sophomore. In 2009, she was a PrepVolleyball.com National Freshman of the Year finalist and has been a regular face at the USA High Performance Camps. Nwanebu has previously earned All-America honors from MaxPreps and PrepVolleyball.com and was chosen by the Texas Sports Writer’s Association as a Co-Player of the Year in addition to the numerous accolades throughout her accomplished club and high school career.

 

“Ebony is a very dynamic young player,” said Haley. “She can not only play on the outside and in the middle, but she has one of the most devastating serves from the end line, she can pass, and is going to be a player that will impact all parts of the game from all over the court for us.”

 

The Trojans (24-4, 12-4 Pac-12) have four regular-season matches left on the schedule and will close out play at the Galen Center with top-ranked Stanford (24-2, 16-0) in town for a Thursday match at 7 p.m. PT and California (14-12, 8-8) on Friday at 7 p.m. The USC-Cal match is Senior Day for the Women of Troy who will honor middle blocker Natasa Siljkovic, defensivespecialist Erin Yoder, and opposite hitter Katie Fuller in pre-match ceremonies.

Oregon State Volleyball Swept By No. 6 Washington

 

SEATTLE – Ashley Eneliko recorded 11 kills and Becky Defoe tallied 13 digs but the Oregon State volleyball team dropped a 3-0 decision to No. 6 Washington Saturday night at Bank of Arena. Set scores were 15-25, 13-256 and 22-25.

 

 

Eneliko picked up her third consecutive match in double figures and the senior has 39 over that stretch. She had her 11 kills in 23 attacks.

 

Defoe, meanwhile, inched closer to breaking her own school record for digs – she had 555 last season and now has 554 this season. The junior also moved into sole possession of second place in school history for a career at 1,491.

 

The Beavers hit .144 in the match, which was surpassed by mark of .245. The Huskies (22-5 overall, 13-5 Pac-12 Conference) were led by Cassie Strickland’s 10 kills.

 

Oregon State (14-16, 4-14) out-blocked the Huskies, 6-5.5 and had 42 digs to Washington’s 37.

 

Haley Clarke led the Beavers with three blocks.

 

Washington went up 2-0 by hitting .333 in set one and .346 in set two. The Huskies went up 1-0 with a 25-15 set one victory and then jumped out to a 2-0 advantage with a 25-13 win in set two.

 

The Huskies took the third and final set with a 25-22 win. OSU hit .162 to .146 for UW, and pulled to within two, 22-20, but could not force a fourth set.

 

Oregon State returns home next week for the last two matches of regular season play. The Beavers host USC Tuesday night at 8 p.m. PT in a match scheduled for Pac-12 Oregon. OSU then hosts Oregon in the Civil War presented by Pacific Source, Your Local Ford Stores, Wells Fargo and McDonald’s. That match starts at 8 p.m. Friday and will also be televised on Pac-12 Oregon.

 

The Beavers will honor their five seniors – Ashley Eneliko, Martie Massey, Megan McBride, Alyssa O’Neil and Camille Saxton – after the Civil War match.
