Former USA Volleyball National Team coach Tom Hogan and Mountain West Conference Player of the Year Katelin Batten join the staff
DENVER – Tom Hogan and Katelin Batten will join the University of Denver volleyball coaching staff for the 2012 season, it was announced today by head coach Jesse Mahoney.
Hogan joins the Pioneer family after spending three seasons as an assistant coach at the University of Colorado. Prior to his coaching stint with the Buffs, Hogan was a member of USA Women’s Volleyball National Team coaching staff for four years. Hogan was instrumental in helping the women earn a silver medal at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing.
“Tom is a great teacher of the game and has tremendous experience coaching at the highest levels,” Mahoney said. “Our players and our staff will benefit greatly from his knowledge and unique skill set.”
Hogan was also largely responsible for the success Team USA experienced in 2005 as he helped them to a gold medal at the NORCECA Championships and a silver medal at the World Grand Champions Cup. He served as the head coach for Team USA at the 2008 World Pan American Cup in Mexico, leading the girls to a fifth-place finish and a berth in the 2009 FIVB World Grand Prix.
Aside from his head coaching experience with Team USA, Hogan also served as the head coach of the Miami University (Ohio) women’s volleyball club team, which won the national championship in 2002 and was a National Championship finalist in 2001. He was also a member of the Miami University women’s varsity coaching staff, serving as a student assistant.
Batten has a wealth of playing experience and has been mentored by some of the best volleyball coaches in the country. As a club coach she has assisted legendary Nebraska volleyball head coach Terry Petit, and was also a member of the Front Range Volleyball Club coaching staff under one of the top junior level coaches in the U.S. in Jim Miret.
“Batty is a passionate young coach who will bring a high level of enthusiasm and energy to the gym,” Mahoney said. “She has been mentored by some great volleyball minds and will bring a great competitive edge to the program.”
Batten was a member of the Colorado State women’s volleyball team from 2006-09, making an NCAA Post-Season Tournament appearance in each of her four years. Batten holds the top mark as the Mountain West Conference’s and CSU’s all-time career digs leader. Aside from being All-West Region Libero of the Year and a member of the All-MWC Team in 2009, Batten was also honored with MWC Libero of the Year. She also earned All-American Honorable Mention her senior year.
