This season McGill has 270 digs for an average of 5.51 per set, and is second in the league in the statistic by .01. She has also added ten service aces, and a pair of kills over the 13 matches of the season.
McGill also earned the honor after the season's opening weekend on August 30. Teammate and classmate Megan Steenhuysen earned the Offensive Player of the Week honor last week, giving the Mastodons three total award winners in the four weeks of the award season.
The Mastodons, 6-7 on the season and 2-1 in Summit League play, resume play this weekend when they host the Southern Utah Thunderbirds (5-6, 3-1 Summit League) on Friday, September 24, before hosting UMKC (4-9, 1-3 Summit) an evening later, with first serve for both games slated for 7:00 PM at the Hilliard Gates Sports Center.

WSU Freshman Volleyball Player Oceana Bush at USA National Volleyball Team Tryouts
PULLMAN, Wash. -- Washington State volleyball player Oceana Bush will participate in the annual open tryouts for the U.S. Women’s National Team and Associated Training Programs, Feb. 19-21, 2010, at the U.S. Olympic Training Center (USOTC) in Colorado Springs, Colo.
Bush, a freshman libero/defensive specialist from Spokane, Wash., was a Pacific-10 Conference All-Freshman team first team selection last fall. Bush led the NCAA Tournament participant Cougars’ 2009 team in digs with 531 and had a 4.78 digs per set average which was fourth-best in the Pac-10. She set the school record with 39 digs in the five-set match win over Arizona State Oct. 3. Bush tallied double-digit digs in 29 of WSU’s 31 matches and had 9 digs in the other two matches. She was named the top libero at the Utah Valley La Quinta Inn & Suites Invite.
Hugh McCutcheon, the U.S. Women’s National Team Head Coach, will lead the evaluation process for spots on the U.S. Women’s Volleyball National Team program and the U.S. Women’s Senior A2 teams. The U.S. Women’s National Team program is open to athletes who have concluded their college eligibility and who wish to train full-time. This program could begin as early as February 2010, or when an athlete’s scholastic or professional club season has concluded. Athletes who will have remaining collegiate eligibility may still participate in the program with participation beginning May 2010 or when their scholastic calendar ends.
“I think this is a good opportunity for Oceana to get in the USA Volleyball pipeline and be recognized and at least evaluated to see if her talent and abilities are up to what is needed for the next Olympic Games,” Cougar Head Coach Andrew Palileo said. “Oceana will put her name out there and she will have a goal she can work towards if that is something that she wants to do. Washington State wanted to provide her this opportunity so that Oceana could go to Colorado Springs and showcase her abilities.”

Volleyball Tops UNC Greensboro, 3-0
Herd Continues Strong Start, 9-0
GREENSBORO, N.C. – Freshman Katy Schad recorded a match-best 14 kills and added nine digs to help the Marshall University volleyball team stay undefeated, with a 3-0 sweep of UNC Greensboro at Fleming Gymnasium, Wednesday evening.
The victory keeps the Herd win-streak intact, upping the season record to 9-0. The 3-0 (25-18, 25-18, 25-19) score marked a first for the Herd this season, as MU kept the Spartans from tallying 20-or-more points in any set of the match. The loss drops UNCG to 4-4 on the year.
“We played our best all around match of the season tonight,” head coach Mitch Jacobs said. “We blocked well, attacked well, passed well and played with a lot of focus. We are very proud of the way the team played tonight”
“Our service game kept them [UNCG] out of system for most of the night and were able to play in system all night, which was key for us.”
In her first season with the Herd, Schad has made an immediate impact. The 14 kills she registered came on 30 total attacks, while making just three miscues, compiling a .367 attacking percentage. Her kill total is the second most in her young career, as she tallied 17 in a match against Charlotte this past weekend at the High Point University Classic. For the season she is averaging 3.16 kills and 3.25 digs-per-set.
“Katy was solid offensively, and she kept within herself,” Jacobs said. “She was matched up against their top middle and did a great job.”
In the first set, the match featured 12 ties, with the last coming at 15-all. Elizabeth Fleming held serve for seven straight points, forcing UNCG to call two timeouts during the rally. The Herd, in total, went on a 10-3 run, with the match ending on a Kristin Marcum kill, set up by Fleming, 25-18.
The second frame allowed MU to take control early, causing the Spartans to call a timeout, trailing by seven points, 16-9. UNCG would get as close at five, 20-15, but the Herd was able to close out the set, 25-18.
The third and final set had the Herd jump out to an 8-2 advantage. After UNCG called its second timeout of the frame, trailing 14-7, the Spartans were able to inch back into the contest. Marshall’s lead would shrink to five, 24-19, before they took the set and the match on Schad’s 14th and final kill of the night.
Marcum continues to fill the stat sheet with the match against UNCG being no exception. The senior tallied a season-high 19 digs and added nine kills, one block assist and a service ace in the win.
Emily Sullivan added seven kills, three digs and three block assists, while Elizabeth Herman chipped in with nine digs, four block assists and two kills.
Fleming distributed a match-high 29 assists, while adding nine digs. Ryanne Milligan tallied eight digs for the Herd at the libero position.
“Tonight, Milligan played one of her best matches of the season,” Jacobs said. “She didn’t get a lot of digs, but her positioning was fantastic.”
UNCG was led by Emily Lindborg, who tallied a team-best eight kills. Catherine Hanners was the match medalist for digs, recording 17 on the night. She added six kills, while Caley Redden and Arielle Lysacek contributed 11 and 10 digs, respectively.
MU travels to Chapel Hill, N.C., to take part in the Carolina Classic, which features Colorado State, Tennessee and UNC. The Herd will play the Rams on Friday at 4:30 inside the Dean E. Smith Center. On Saturday, MU will then play the Tar Heels and Volunteers at 10 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. respectively.
