The Panther volleyball squad enters its second week of practice on Monday

 

MIAMI – The fall season is underway for the FIU volleyball team, as the Panthers began their preseason training camp last week in the friendly confines of the U.S. Century Bank Arena.

 

FIU looks to defend its 2009 Sun Belt Conference Regular Season Championship and strive for a third straight NCAA Tournament bid in 2010, with seven letterwinners and three starters, + libero, returning from last year’s squad. The Panthers, who will be led by senior All-American Natalia Valentin and fellow veteran Ines Medved, welcome six new student-athletes to the mix – all entering their first collegiate seasons.

 

“The main focus for our first week of training camp was individual player fundamental mastery,” said Head Coach Danijela Tomic, who is entering her sixth season at the helm of the Panther volleyball squad. “We have six new players and we have to do a lot of teaching of fundamental skills.”

 

The student-athletes and coaches have been hard at work for one week now, more often than not putting in two practices a day to prepare for the upcoming season.

 

“Our morning sessions are designed for small group mentoring, and that’s where we focus on a very technical training,” said Tomic. “In the afternoon sessions we continue the fundamental skill development but through competitive three-on-three and six-on-six games.”

 

As the Panthers continue their preseason training camp this week, experience and fresh, new talent combine, as the importance of leadership, passion and a strong work ethic come to the forefront.

 

“I am very impressed with the hard work and enthusiasm that the whole team has brought to practice every day so far,” said Tomic. “They are all coming for extra work between the sessions without us coaches asking them to come. Our returners have set standards for how hard our team works every day, and the new girls are following their lead. We will continue working on fundamentals until our last practice of the season because we can never be satisfied where we are when it comes to mastering fundamentals. We will work even more on serve and serve receive and putting our offensive and defensive system together as we continue our training camp.”

 

The theme for the 2010 FIU volleyball squad is “Arete,” which is a Greek word for virtue, excellence, goodness, courage and strength.

 

“Ultimately, [Arete] is the act of living up to one’s full human potential,” said Tomic. “We ask our whole team, coaches included, to give 100 percent every day in everything we do, and to work on reaching perfection even though we know that we can never achieve it. However, we know that if we give a perfect effort every day, we will be successful in anything we do, and the score will take care of itself.”

 

FIU will open its competitive 2010 slate at the Florida State Invitational in Tallahassee, Fla., on Aug. 27-28. The Panthers will play a pair of matches on Friday, Aug. 27, going up against New Mexico State and reigning MEAC Champion Florida A&M before wrapping up the first weekend of action against 2009 ACC Champion and host Florida State on Saturday, Aug. 28.

CLINTON, S.C. – The Presbyterian College volleyball team wrapped up its fourth day of preseason practice Friday with another high-intensity workout ending at 5 p.m.

“We installed our offense this morning and were able to work on our defense in the afternoon session,” head coach Chris Belshe stated. “We were able to get plays in and the team started picking up everything really well.

“In the afternoon practice, we worked on ball control,” Belshe added. “Right now we are able to practice a lot and we are focused on getting everyone the most repetitions as possible.

“I am pleased with the commitment the team has and the energy that they have shown. Every single student-athlete has been phenomenal this week and we are very excited about the upcoming season.”

BATON ROUGE – The LSU volleyball team has put nine practice sessions in the books over its first five days of preseason camp in the auxiliary gym at the Maravich Center.

 

“I’ve learned this group is already coming together as a great team,” head coach Fran Flory said. “The unity and way they fit together is progressing faster than I thought it would. Overall, we’ve focused on ball control and that portion of our game has really developed. We have a lot of pieces and haven’t tried to put them together yet because we’re working on understanding individual portions of our system,”

 

The defending SEC champions entered camp with nine of its 14 players either freshmen or sophomores and Flory has impressed with how quick her young players have developed.  

 

“Our young players have come out and shown some excellent leadership,” Flory said. “There weren’t voids just left in play but voids needed to be filled in communication and leadership. That’s a huge plus when we’re replacing the types of kids we have to replace from last year.”

 

The Tigers are scheduled to have 11 additional practice sessions over the next week leading into the annual Purple & Gold Scrimmage on Saturday, August 21 inside the Maravich Center. The point of emphasis heading into week two of camp is putting a lineup together.

 

“We’re two weeks away [from opening weekend], and we need figure out which players play well next to each other,” Flory said. “The emphasis in the beginning was to evaluate where they are and take them to where they need to be. Next week will be very lineup oriented with a lot of competition.” 

 

Under Flory, LSU is one of only 20 programs to appear in each of the last five NCAA Tournaments. The Tigers open the 2010 season with Pacific, Siena and Texas A&M on August 27-28 as part of the Texas A&M Invitational.

Wildcats will spend four days holding fall workouts at Yavapai College in Prescott, Ariz.

 

 

The Arizona Volleyball team will be getting back to a time-honored tradition first started in Coach David Rubio’s inaugural 1992 season. 

 

This morning the team and staff loaded up equipment and luggage and headed north for Prescott, Ariz. where it will hold training camp at Yavapai College for four days.  Over the course of their stay, the players and coaches will continue on-court preparations for the beginning of non-conference play.  The team will also utilize the trip to grow closer together in hopes of a successful 2010 season.

 

A few events on the itinerary include an intrasquad scrimmage tomorrow afternoon, two-a-day practices and various night activities.  Although there are quite a number of familiar faces on the team in 2010, the Wildcats do welcome in six newcomers, so Rubio eyes team chemistry as a top priority.

 

“I think this trip will benefit our team immensely,” said Rubio.  “We’ve done the Prescott trip as a program in the past and had some positive results, and I just felt the time was right to get back to it.”

 

Upon return to Tucson on Monday afternoon, the Wildcats will hold a final week of double day practices.  On the week of August 23, UA will conduct its usual regular practice schedule before heading off to South Bend, Ind. for the season-opening Shamrock Invitational.

CONWAY, Ark- Looking to repeat last year's success, the University of Central Arkansas volleyball team opened the 2010 season with the first day of practice on Tuesday. The Sugar Bears, who went 27-3 overall and 16-0 en route to a Southland Conference title in 2009, enter their first season eligible for postseason play, having completed the four-year NCAA Division I transition period. Six freshmen will join the seven letterwinners from last year's championship team.

"We had a good first day," said sixth-year head coach Steven McRoberts. "We thought we got a lot of our philosophy on board with our freshman."

The Sugar Bears started with positional practices during the day. An only freshmen practice kicked off the evening session, followed by full squad instruction.

"We are happy with the competitiveness of the newcomers already," said McRoberts. "We have a lot of positions up for grabs. This will be the most depth we've ever had on the team. We're going to have good players at every position."

Returning for UCA is senior right side Chloe Smith, the two-time Southland Conference Player of the Year; senior defensive specialist Chloe Evans, junior Cristin Curl, the reigning Southland Libero of the Year; junior outside hitter Jessica Hays; sophomore setter Lauren Dear; sophomore middle blocker Taylor Hammonds; and sophomore Lindsey Barron.

The freshman class includes outside hitter Karlie Giesler, defensive specialist/outside hitter Megan Elmquist, middle blockers Jessica Nagy and Kyle Hartman, defensive specialist Beth Rogers and setter Marissa Collins.

The Sugar Bears start the season on Aug. 27 against Northern Arizona in Laramie, Wyo. UCA will host an alumni match on Aug. 21 at 1 p.m. and the annual Purple-Gray match on Aug. 24 at 7 p.m.

Cougars Hold First Practice Tuesday

HOUSTON – A new era has begun for the University of Houston volleyball program. Fourteen student-athletes reported to campus this week for the start of preseason training camp in anticipation of the 2010 season and their first season under head coach Molly Alvey.  
 
The student-athletes reported to campus on Monday afternoon after checking into the dorms and attending a series of meetings with various groups within the Athletics Department.
 
They were then finally able to take to the court on Tuesday afternoon, beginning two weeks of two-a-day practices, prior to the start of classes on Aug. 23.
 
“As a staff we are really excited to be back with our own team,” Alvey said. “This spring was a lot of time spent on the road recruiting.”
 
The players are incredibly excited to take on the new challenges put in front of them, and there is a positive buzz surrounding the volleyball program.”
 
Alvey has a set of goals for the team during the next two weeks, but one of those goals is more important than the others.
 
“Our biggest goal over the next two weeks is to learn how to compete as one unit,” Alvey said.
 
Alvey will begin her first season at the helm of the volleyball program on Aug. 27-28 when the team travels to Austin, Texas, for the Texas Invitational.

Arkansas State Volleyball Announces 2010 Schedule; Red Wolves Report for Fall Camp

JONESBORO, Ark. (8/10/10) – Arkansas State Volleyball announced its
2010 schedule Tuesday which includes four preseason tournaments and
nine conference contests in Jonesboro.

The Red Wolves will open the season Aug. 27-28 when they host
Louisiana Tech, Northwestern State and Arkansas-Pine Bluff in the ASU
Invitational at the HPESS complex on the ASU campus.  A-State will
visit Bloomington, Ind. for the Indiana University Tournament Sept.
3-4, Tulsa, Okla. for the University of Tulsa Invitational Sept. 10-11
and Houston, Texas for the Rice University Invitational Sept. 17-18.

Arkansas State will return to the Convocation Center to open Sun Belt
Conference action, hosting Western Kentucky Sept. 24 and Middle
Tennessee Sept. 26.

The Red Wolves will spend the next two weekends on the road, traveling
to Troy Oct. 1 and South Alabama Oct. 3 before visiting North Texas
Oct. 8 and Denver Oct. 10.

In-state rival UALR will visit the Convocation Center Oct. 15 for a
matchup with ASU, while Florida Atlantic and Florida International
will make stops in Jonesboro the following weekend (Oct. 22 and 24).

Oct. 29 and 30 will mark a road swing through the state of Louisiana
for the Red Wolves as they meet ULM Friday and Louisiana-Lafayette
Saturday before returning to Jonesboro for matches against Denver Nov.
5 and North Texas Nov. 6 at the HPESS complex.

ASU will travel to Little Rock to take on the UALR Trojans for a
second time in their only midweek action of the season Nov. 9 at the
Jack Stephens Center.

The Red Wolves will then wrap up their season Nov. 12 and 13, hosting
ULM and Louisiana-Lafayette at the HPESS complex.

This year’s SBC Tournament will be hosted by Middle Tennessee in
Murfreesboro, Tenn. Nov. 18-20, and the NCAA Tournament first and
second rounds are set for Dec. 2-4.

The Red Wolves reported for fall camp Tuesday morning, beginning with
a focus on front row and back row defensive systems in their first
week of practices.  ASU welcomed three returning Red Wolves and nine
new faces, including five freshmen and four transfers.

ASU head coach Justin Ingram said, “This morning went very well, and
we are all optimistic about direction of this team.  The girls have
been working hard all summer, and we are certainly seeing the
rewards.”

Oregon State Volleyball Team Opens 2010 Campaign with Successful First Team Practices

Corvallis, Ore. – The Oregon State volleyball squad opened up its 2010 campaign on Monday with a two-a-day in legendary Gill Coliseum. The Beavers opened up the day with practice at 8:00 a.m., strength and conditioning at 10:15 a.m. and wrapped up with another practice at 3:00 p.m.

 

“The team came back in good physical condition, and we were very pleased with the first round of practices, the competitiveness and also the dedication to our drill regiment,” head coach Taras Liskevych said. “We worked on ball control, getting everyone used to simple things like communication, making sure they handled the ball a lot and getting into a routine to sustain more team play later in the week.”

 

The Beavers were led by their three senior co-captains Jill Sawatzky (St. Andrews, Maintoba), Kiersten Sambrailo (Watsonville, Calif.) and Kaitlan Locke (West Linn, Ore.), and were joined by the six other veterans sophomores Tami Brown (Eugene, Ore.), Alyssa O’Neil (West Linn, Ore.), Camille Saxton (Balzac, Alberta), Dianni Freeman (Tigard, Ore.) and Megan McBride (Auburn, Wash.).

 

“It was a good start to a promising season,” Sawatzky said. “This week is all about integrating the new players and making a team of 18 play as a unit. The new players are a fun bunch that bring great attitudes and effort.”

 

The squad was doubled with junior transfer Dre Shaw (Wailuku, Hawai'i), sophomore Martie Massey (Beaverton, Ore.) and freshmen Kelsey Zimmerman (Bend, Ore.), Becky Defoe (Bend, Ore.), Mona Kressl (Langenzenn, Germany), Natalie Morgan (Santa Cruz, Calif.), Allie Rogers (Eugene, Ore.), Laura Schaudt (Philomath, Ore.) and Tayla Woods (Corvallis, Ore.) being added to the roster for the upcoming season.

The Knights are looking forward to a successful 2010 season.

 

ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) – The 2010 UCF volleyball season officially got underway as third year head coach Todd Dagenais’ Knights opened preseason camp at The Venue at UCF Monday morning.

 

The two-week training camp will see the Black and Gold participating in twice-daily practices, before concluding with the annual Black and Gold Scrimmage which is scheduled for Aug. 21. 

 

“The energy has really been building to a crescendo in the past six weeks,” Dagenais said. “The team has really committed themselves to being ready for this day and it definitely showed during a very spirited and enthusiastic morning practice.”

 

The Knights will mostly be working on the intricate skills of the game in the early portions of camp. The coaching staff plans to focus mostly on teaching, but will also mix in enough competitive playing to keep practices exciting and fresh.

 

UCF returns nine players from its 2009 roster this season, including juniors Kristin Fisher (Clearwater, Fla.) and Sara Rex (Oldsmar, Fla.). The duo combined to post 459 kills and 99 blocks last season and will serve as the leaders of their young squad in 2010. Dagenais praised the dedication that the upperclassmen have put toward making the upcoming season one for the record books.

 

“All the work that our leaders have put in throughout the last eight months has really paid off,” Dagenais said. “They have done everything in their power to make this a prosperous preseason camp.”

 

Six newcomers also made their UCF debut in preseason training camp after being lauded as one of the top 100 recruiting classes in the nation by PrepVolleyball.com in June. The class includes Katie Tatum (OH - Roxboro, N.C.), Marie Reiterova (S - Luxembourg, Luxembourg), Roxy Mendez (L - Orlando, Fla.), Allison Rinderknecht (OH/MB - Jacksonville, Fla.), Kaye-Alese Green (MB - Jacksonville, Fla.) and Rachel Vukson (S - Oakville, Ontario)

 

The Knights open the 2010 season Aug. 27-28 at the Florida Gulf Coast Tournament in Ft. Myers. During the event, UCF will take on Houston Baptist, the host Eagles and Bethune-Cookman.

Huskies begin preparation for season-opening NIU Invitational Aug. 27-28

 

DeKALB, Ill. - The members of the Northern Illinois volleyball team officially put summer behind them as they reported for preseason camp yesterday, marking the true beginning of the 2010 season.

 

This year’s Huskies started preparation for the upcoming campaign by doing the annual “river test,” which is an intense conditioning drill, and followed with a practice session.  Later, the group met at ninth-year head coach Ray Gooden’s house for a team dinner. 

 

After dinner, Gooden gave the yearly “preseason speech” to the team.  This season’s goal: Win the Mid-American Conference to get to the NCAA Tournament.  Last season, the Huskies earned a bye in the first round of the MAC Tournament, marking the second time that Gooden has accomplished the feat.  This year, NIU is looking to take the next step.

 

Following 11 more days of practice, the route to the next step starts with the annual NIU Invitational on August 27-28 at Victor E. Court.  The season opener will be against Chicago State at noon Central, and later that evening, the Huskies will take on Oakland at 7 p.m.

 

The NIU roster that will soon face the Cougars is comprised of seven returners, including 2009 MAC Defensive Player of the Year Maddie Hughes and second team All-MAC selection Allison McGlaughlin, and six newcomers.

Golden Hurricane returns seven players, welcomes seven newcomers

 

TULSA, Okla. – The University of Tulsa volleyball team began practice Monday with a pair of workouts in advance of the 2010 season. Sunday, head coach Ed Allen welcomed back seven returning players and seven newcomers to the team that finished 26-7 in 2009 with a second-place finish in Conference USA.

 

Among the returners are sophomore outside hitter Tyler Henderson, who was a 2009 AVCA All-America and also named the Conference USA and AVCA All-Midwest Region Freshman of the Year, and an All-C-USA and Midwest Region First Team member. Senior middle blocker Hannah Stout and sophomore libero Jessica Adams, both 2009 All-C-USA Second Team members return as well. The Golden Hurricane also returns senior middle blocker Shaylin Werner, junior outside hitter Kelsey Hancock, sophomore setter Jordan Clampitt and sophomore defensive specialist/libero Shelbi Pitcher.

 

Tulsa welcomed seven newcomers including four freshmen and three transfers. Sophomore outside hitter Dianna Silva (Niteroi, Brazil) and sophomore middle blocker Miriele Gobbo (Curitiba, Brazil) both transferred to TU after one season at Freed-Hardeman and Texas-Brownsville, respectively, while junior defensive specialist Stephanie Heim (Rogersville, Mo.) comes to TU from East Central College. Among the incoming freshmen are outside hitter Kellie Culbertson (Long Beach, Calif.), setter Nicole Hragyil (Carrollton, Texas), middle blocker Elizabeth Kale (Frisco, Texas) and defensive specialist Caitlin Dyche (Colorado Springs, Colo.).

 

The Golden Hurricane begins the 2010 season at the IPFW Invitational, Aug. 27-28. TU plays at the 2010 Asics Challenge in San Francisco on Sept. 3-4, and plays host to the Radisson Tulsa Airport Invitational Sept. 10-11 at the Donald W. Reynolds Center.

McNeese State Volleyball Cowgirls Go Through Drills and Work On Volleyball Hitting Technique

LAKE CHARLES--  McNeese State's volleyball team went through two workouts here Monday with the workouts consisting of teaching by first year head coach Terry Gamble.

"We approached today like it was the first time we ever walked into the gym.  We started with fundamentals and drills that will be used in the system I use," said Gamble.

     The day began with weights followed by drills on the track before the Cowgirls moved into Memorial Gym for core work and technique drills.

    

The afternoon session concentrated on more core work, skill training and hitting drills.  Gamble also began to implement defensive drills.

   

The Cowgirls will continue two-a-days until Aug. 21.  The Cowgirls will practice from 9-Noon and 2-5 p.m. this week with Sunday being as their off day.

BATON ROUGE – The LSU volleyball team started its 2010 campaign Monday with a pair of workouts inside the auxiliary gym of the Maravich Center.  The Tigers practiced for close to three hours during both the morning and afternoon sessions.

 

“Today was a great starting point,” head coach Fran Flory said. “We have a lot of young players and have to replace four great seniors [Brittnee Cooper, Sam Dabbs, Lauren DeGirolamo and Marina Skender] from last year’s team. Our young kids have come in very prepared to play, while our older players did a great job in the weight room. Physically, we’re ready to go but it will take time to learn the system.”

 

The defending SEC champions have racked up an impressive 115-38 record en route to five-straight SEC Western Division titles and are one of only 20 programs in the nation to collect five consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances since 2005.

 

For LSU to build on those impressive streaks in 2010, the Tigers will rely on veterans Angela Bensend, Brittney Johnson, Lauren Waclawczyk and Michele Williams. All four have logged significant court time with Bensend and Williams picking up 2007 and 2008 All-SEC Freshman Team honors, respectively.  

 

Couple that with the buzz provided by LSU’s incoming freshmen class highlighted by Desiree Elliott, Avery Striebel and Nicole Willis, all of which garnered AVCA Under Armour High School All-America Second-Team status.

 

“With this many young players, there’s a lot of teaching that will have to go on early,” Flory said. “Truly, I believe one of the best parts about our coaching staff is that they’re great teachers. The players are already receptive and responsive, that’s a plus. We’re going to throw some things at them early and see how they respond.”  

 

LSU is scheduled to practice for 12 consecutive days leading into the annual Purple & Gold scrimmage on Saturday, August 21 at 7 p.m.

Ohio State Buckeyes Women's Volleyball Team Opens Fall Training Camp Next Week

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Ohio State women's volleyball team begins fall camp when the squad reports Sunday, Aug. 8 for the third season under head coach Geoff Carlston. The Buckeyes will practice Monday and then depart for a retreat at Lake Hope. Ohio State returns to St. John Arena Wednesday to continue preseason workouts. The Buckeyes finished the 2009 season with a 25-10 overall record and finished tied for fourth in the Big Ten Conference with a 12-8 record.

A LOOK AT OHIO STATE
The Buckeyes have 11 letterwinners returning from 2009 including four starters: middle blocker Kelli Barhorst and outside hitters Emily Danks, Anna Szerszen and Katie Dull.

BUCKEYES HOST SCARLET & GRAY MATCH, AUG 24, 7 P.M.
The women's volleyball team will play an intersquad match at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 24 in St. John Arena. Admission is free. The Scarlet & Gray match is the final warmup before the season begins later in the week.

"VOLLEYRULES" TO FOLLOW SCARLET & GRAY MATCH
An informal question and answer session will be held immediately after the Scarlet & Gray match. Following "VOLLEYRULES", an autograph session will be held.

OSU OPENS 2010 SEASON WITH VIRGINIA COMMONWEALTH
The Buckeyes will open the 2010 season by hosting Virginia Commonwealth at 7 p.m., Friday, Aug. 27 in the Sports Imports Classic. Play continues Satuday with OSU hosting Western Michigan at 11 a.m. and Pittsburgh at 7 p.m.
