Maryland Volleyball Comes up Short against Georgia Tech
Terps threaten Yellow Jackets, lose 3-0.
COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Senior Katie Usher led the Terrapins with eight kills, three blocks and a pair of service aces Sunday afternoon, but the visiting Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets earned a 3-0 victory against the University of Maryland volleyball team at Comcast Pavilion.
The Terps (11-17, 3-12 ACC) were able to put significant pressure on the Yellow Jackets (18-7, 12-3 ACC) for most of the match, but couldn’t break through, losing by scores of 25-20, 25-23 and 25-18.
Maryland started well in the first set, jumping out to a 9-5 lead. The set was later tied at 14 apiece and up for grabs late with the Jackets holding an 18-17 lead. However, Georgia Tech scored three points in a row to go up four and eventually won by five.
Like the first set, the Terps started quickly in the second stanza. Maryland went up 4-0 thanks to a pair of Taylor Jones service aces and later took a 20-16 lead and was on the verge of victory up 23-21. But Maryland couldn’t get the final two points and Georgia Tech scored four consecutive times to steal the set and take a 2-0 lead in the match.
The third and final set was another close affair most of the way. However, with the score knotted at 16, the Yellow Jackets sealed the victory with a 9-2 closing run.
The Terps had one of their most productive serving matches of the season, recording nine aces with two apiece from Usher, Remy McBain and Jones.
Monique Mead led Georgia Tech with 11 kills on .429 hitting and Bailey Hunter added 10 kills on .500 hitting.
Maryland is home again next weekend against North Carolina and NC State, respectively.

Ball State Women's Volleyball Scores Senior Day Sweep Of CMU
MUNCIE, Ind. - - The Ball State women's volleyball team celebrated senior day with a 3-0 (26-24, 27-25, 25-8) sweep of visiting Central Michigan Sunday afternoon at Worthen Arena.
With the win, the Cardinals improve to 12-15 overall and 5-9 in the Mid-American Conference. The Chippewas drop to 14-10 (7-7 MAC) with the setback.
In the win, BSU senior Alisha Green (Country Club Hills, Ill./Hillcrest H.S.) helped limit the Central Michigan attack to a season-low -.133 (21-36-113) attack percentage with a career-high eight total blocks. In the third set alone, Green tallied six of her blocks while CMU hit for a -.412 (2-16-34) mark thanks to nine total BSU blocks.
Fellow seniors Julie Breivogel (Boonville, Ind./Boonville H.S.) and Elaina Kakatolis (Arcanum, Ohio/Franklin Monroe H.S.) added four blocks each, with Breivogel adding a match-high seven kills and Kakatolis scoring two. Overall, BSU out-blocked CMU 16 to nine on the afternoon.
Defensively, junior Alyssa Rio (Wayne, Ill./St. Francis H.S.) collected a match-best 19 digs, as the Cardinals out-dug CMU 48 to 31. Sophomore Kaylee Schembra (Indianapolis, Ind./Roncalli H.S.) added 10 digs.
Kaitlyn Schultz was Central Michigan's top attack on the day, posting six kills while finishing the match as the only CMU player with a positive attacking percentage at .154 (6-4-13). Alexis Lonneman chipped in with a team-high nine digs.
After the teams battled to a 4-4 stalemate to open the first set, Central Michigan rattled off the next eight points thanks in part to two block assists and a pair of kills from Schultz. With CMU maintaining a 17-12 lead, a kill from junior Hannah Sullivan (New Albany, Ind./New Albany H.S.), a Karin Caudill (Selma, Ind./Burris Laboratory School) service ace and a Green kill got the Cardinals within two at 17-15.
While the Chippewas pushed the lead back to four at 19-15, a hitting error and kills from Breivogel and sophomore Brittany McGinnis (Fraser, Mich./Fraser H.S.) moved the score to 19-18. Moments later, the Cardinals tied the set at 22 on another CMU attacking miscue. Sullivan would then give BSU its first lead of the night, at 23-22, with a smash to the Worthen Arena floor.
From there, the Cardinals reached set point at 24-23 on a Charde' Phillips (Elyria, Ohio/Elyria H.S.) kill. After a BSU service error tied the set, a service error and attack error from the Chippewas gave BSU a 26-24 opening-set win.
Central Michigan came out strong once again in the second set, building a 7-3 lead thanks in part to a pair of aces from Lauren Krupsky. However, BSU responded with a 12-3 run of their own, to take a 15-10 edge. CMU was not done, battling back to tie the set at 17. From there, Central Michigan reached set point at 24-22 after a Danielle Gotham kill and a BSU attack error.
Ball State answered back by forcing an attack error and with a Sullivan solo block to tie the score at 24. A Sullivan kill gave BSU its first swing for the set, but Krupsky followed with a kill, knotting the score at 25. Another Sullivan blast gave BSU its second set point, while a CMU attack error ended the set at 27-25.
The Chippewas scored the first two points of the third set, only to have three-straight BSU blocks give the Cardinals all the momentum. After pulling out a 13-8 lead, the Cardinals scored the final 12 points of the match. In the final run, BSU posted three blocks, while Sullivan added two kills and Caudill served up her third ace of the day. CMU's -.412 (2-16-34) attack percentage in the frame was the lowest single-set output for a BSU opponent this season.
The Ball State women's volleyball team closes the home portion of the regular season Thursday with a 7 p.m. first serve versus Toledo. The match will be televised on the Ball State Sports Network.

Virginia Tech Volleyball Women Drop Five-set Heartbreaker to UNC
Willoughby sets career high with 13 blocks
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The Virginia Tech volleyball squad put together a strong effort, but fell to North Carolina, 3-2 (25-18, 23-25, 25-18, 20-25, 10-25), Sunday afternoon at the Dean E. Smith Center in Chapel Hill, N.C.
Sunday's match marked the third time in previous four matches Tech (17-9, 7-8 ACC) and North Carolina (14-12, 10-5 ACC) battled to five sets. The Hokies won earlier this year in Cassell Coliseum, and suffered a similar heartbreak against the Heels at Chapel Hill on Oct. 9, 2008. Tech more than doubled the Heels up in blocks on Sunday, recording 15.5 and holding North Carolina to seven, as well as out-hit North Carolina .232 to .184.
Junior Felicia Willoughby blocked a career-high 13 attacks, and added 14 kills in 29 attempts in the affair, for her first double-double of the year. Sophomores Justine Record and Erin Leaser also notched their seventh and sixth double-doubles, respectively, in the effort. Record led the team with 17 kills and tied a career-high with 16 digs, while Leaser tallied 56 assists and 12 digs on the afternoon. Freshman Cara Baarendse recorded 14 kills as well.
In addition to Record and Leaser, three other Hokies mustered double-digit digs in the contest. Senior Jill Gergen led the way with 21, freshman Morgan O'Neill registered 13 and junior Amy Wengrenovich earned 10.
Both squads went back and forth early in the opening set. Up 10-9, the Hokies' offense exploded on a 7-0 run, six points coming on senior Jill Gergen's service, to open up a comfortable cushion. The Tar Heels never recoverd as Tech ran away with the first stanza, 25-18.
Set two started and ended close. North Carolina jumped out to an early 5-2 lead, but the Hokies reeled off three straight points to tie the match. From that point on, the two squads tied each other 14 times, and neither team gained more than a two-point advantage for the rest of the period. A Record service ace gave Tech a 23-22 lead, but the Tar Heels won the next two points on a Record service error and an attack error by freshman Jennifer Wiker. The Hokies tried to squash the North Carolina momentum with a time out, but the Heels won the next point on an Emily McGee kill to capture the second set, 25-23.
After another close duel early, Tech used a 3-0 run to earn some breathing room 17-14 in the third set. North Carolina closed within two at 19-17, but a 4-0 run by the Hokies all but buried the Tar Heels. Tech won two of the next three points to down North Carolina in the third frame, 25-18.
A quick 6-2 spurt helped the Tar Heels to an early edge in the fourth set, and they maintained the lead for the duration of the period. Down 23-13 the Hokies rallied, winning seven of the next eight points, but could not cut the gap anymore as the Heels took the fourth stanza, 25-20.
Tied at 3-3 in the final set, North Carolina won three points in a row to take the lead, but Tech battled back to even the set up a 6-6. Another run put the Tar Heels back in the driver's seat though, pulling out to a 10-6 advantage, and the Hokies could not respond with a run over their own. North Carolina carried the lead to a 15-10 victory, and won the match, 3-2.
Tech will return home to Cassell Coliseum next weekend. The Hokies host Duke on Friday at 5 p.m., and Wake Forest on Saturday at 5 p.m. Results will be available on hokiesports.com.
