Flyer Volleyball Recruit Named All-American At AAU Junior Nationals

FLYER VOLLEYBALL RECRUIT NAMED ALL-AMERICAN AT AAU JUNIOR NATIONALS

Megan Campbell, an incoming freshman for the University of Dayton volleyball team, was named an 18U All-American at last week’s 2010 AAU Junior Nationals in Orlando.  Campbell, an outside hitter from Versailles, Ohio, led her Asics Munciana Samurai team to a second-place finish in the 18 Open Division.

"Megan had a great tournament - a coming-out party on the national stage,” UD volleyball coach Kelly Sheffield said.  “Most of the top teams in the country were there and she was as good as anyone.  She made a three-hour round trip drive four or five times a week for the past six months to play with that club team.  She received great coaching and it has really paid off for her.”

“I love seeing a player that is willing to do whatever it takes to reach her potential and Megan really improved her game this year.  She's a competitor and it was obvious that when the competition got tougher, and the moments bigger, she was more dominant."

A three-sport star in high school, Campbell was First Team All-Ohio in volleyball and the District 9 Player of the year in both volleyball and basketball as a senior for Versailles High School.

Also at the AAU Junior Nationals, future teammate Allyson Morey led her Munciana Ninja’s team to a ninth-place finish in the AAU 18 Club Division.  The Ninja’s went 10-1 at the tournament, but their lone loss came in the round of bracket play, placing them behind the eight quarterfinalists in the tournament.

Last season, Dayton finished 30-4 and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament after capturing the Atlantic 10 Championship at the Frericks Center in a nationally-televised broadcast of the championship match.  Senior Lindsay Fletemier was named Third-Team All-American by the AVCA. This fall, UD Arena will be one of four 2010 NCAA Volleyball Championship Regional Sites.

Nancy Cole Named MVP at USAV Junior Olympic Championship

Nancy Cole, an incoming Rice freshman volleyball player from Pasadena, Texas, was named Most Valuable Player of the USAV Junior Olympic Championship as her club team, AVA18 Performance, won the 18-U National Gold Division in Miami, Fla. AVA18 Performance won each of its 11 matches by 2-0 scores including the championship match when it defeated Santa Barbara 18-Blue 25-20 and 25-18.

Cole, a 6-3 middle blocker from Memorial High School in Pasadena, was a two-time MVP of her high school squad and three-time first team All-District 22-5A. In 2008, Cole registered set a school-record with 37 kills vs. Spring High School. 

She joins a Rice volleyball team that finished 23-8 in 2008 and played in the NCAA tournament. The Owls return four starters from last season’s squad.

Congratulations To The Girls Laguna Beach Volleyball Club’s 14 and Under Team

On a winning streak the Girls Laguna Beach Volleyball 14’s and under team has:

• won the 14-Open Division of the USA Junior National Southern California Qualifier Tournament in the beginning of April
• won the Pacific Northwest Qualifier Tournament (14-Open Division) in Spokane, Washington
• qualified to compete in the 14-Open Division (the highest division for this age group) at the USA Junior Olympic Girls Volleyball Championships, to be held in Miami, Florida, June 26 – July 5, 2009

The girls volleyball team consists of: Hannah Gleason, Taylor Whittingham, Brittany Ptak, Kalysta White, Kelsey Humphreys, Alyssa McIvor, Kristie Hewko, Sofia Lvain and Kyra Goodman.

Sharks' player goes from clumsy freshman to senior star

On her first day of volleyball practice at Gulf Coast High School, Sarah Gildersleeve was horrible.

During the first set, she took a hit her on the head. She didn't know techniques, she was slow on her feet — she was a clumsy, 6-foot freshman.

Fast forward to the 2006 season. Now a senior right-side hitter, Gildersleeve has smashed her school's single-season record for kills by landing more than 300 and counting. She also leads the area in kills, averaging almost 16 per game. To say the least, she's gotten better.

Q&A
Teammate: Sundai Weston, sophomore setter

Q: What sort of leader is Sarah for your team?
A: All-around. She leads us in kills and gets us fired up, she always comes out ready to do her job and perform.

Q: You’re one of the younger players on the team. What sort of guidance did Sarah offer you?

A: As a freshman, I didn’t really know anyone. It was intimidating to be in a new school, and in a new environment. There were all these big hitters, and I was the new kid ... but she and I really connected and she made me feel at home.

Q: You set her up for all of her kills. What’s your relationship like on the court?

A: She is a very, very, very aggressive player, so we don’t always get along, especially since I’m the one feeding her the ball. But when she’s in the right state of mind, and she’s one with everyone, she’s a lot of fun to play with.

Q: She says she can be a big goof ball, can you expose some examples of that?

A: Oh, there’s so many. Yesterday, we were getting off the bus at LaBelle and everyone slept most of the way, so we were trying to wake up a little, trying to get ready to play. We all get off and the bus turns around, and we realize Sarah’s still sleeping in the back. We tried to wave down the bus driver, and finally he came back. Some people would be upset or mad that they got left behind, but, right away, Sarah was making fun of the situation and making everyone laugh about it. She’s cool that way.
