The Baylor attack struggled through the first set, but pieced together the offense in the second set for their only win of the day, then reverted in sets three and four as KU got theirs rolling.
Barnes had 40 assists and 10 kills to go along with 12 digs on defense to lead the Bears. Senior Katie Sanders and freshman Torri Campbell each had a team-high 12 kills on the match, but Baylor hit just .176 (51-24-153) on the match, compared to KU’s .252 (60-21-155).

On the other side, the Jayhawks were led by Karina Garlington’s match-high 19 kills and Allison Mayfield’s 16 kills. Libero Melissa Grieb had 19 digs and setter Nicole Tate had 16 digs to go along with her 45 assists.
The Bears recorded the first two points of the first set with kills by Sanders and Campbell, but Garlington put KU on the board with two kills and a block. Tied at 4-4, KU put on a 9-1 run with two blocks and two Mayfield kills. The Bears got as close as 16-11 with two kills by Campbell and one by Graham, but KU scored five of the next six to control the set. The Jayhawks finished it off 25-18 with a kill by Garlington.
In the second set, Baylor came out determined on offense with a kill by Sanders and a Breyfogle service ace for a 2-0 lead. The Bears extended the lead to 11-6 with a kill and block by Breyfogle. As the Baylor block got back in the match, KU was forced into hitting errors after closing to within 16-14. Baylor responded with back-to-back kills by Barnes and Sanders after two Mayfield hitting errors to take a 21-16 lead. After Garlington recorded two more kills, BU got a kill from Barnes and stuffed Mayfield with Campbell and Graham to end the set 25-19.
Baylor controlled the third set early on as Breyfogle teamed up with Barnes and Christenson on back-to-back blocks for a 6-4 lead. KU answered to tie the match at 7-7 and the teams traded points until Baylor took a 16-14 lead with two kills by Barnes. From that point it was all KU, as the Jayhawks scored eight of the last 11 points to win the set 25-20.
In the fourth, Baylor put themselves in position to stay in the match. Breyfogle gave the Bears a 9-5 lead with a kill, then Qian Zhang made it 14-12 with her only kill of the match. But, just as they had done all afternoon, KU got three kills in a row by Mayfield to take a 19-16 lead. The Jayhawks didn’t look back from that point, finishing off the match with two Garlington kills to make 25-20.

GREENVILLE, N.C. – The Marshall University volleyball team defeated East Carolina, 3-1 (25-22, 25-21, 23-25, 25-16) to conclude its regular season and sweep the season series on Saturday afternoon at Minges Coliseum. The Herd will take part in the Conference USA tournament, hosted by Rice University, which starts on Friday, Nov. 20.
MU ends the regular season with a 22-8 overall record, while finishing 10-6 in C-USA play. ECU wrapped up the year 9-19, 2-14 C-USA.
“It’s always tough to overcome the emotions that a team plays with when they have five players celebrating their senior day,” head coach Mitch Jacobs said. “So I’m very proud that we were able to overcome that obstacle and give us the opportunity to come away with a victory.”
An Elizabeth Fleming kill followed by a Katy Schad service ace gave MU a 10-5 lead in the early goings of the first set. The Herd led 13-10, when Elizabeth Herman highlighted a 4-0 rally. The outside hitter recorded three kills and teamed up for a block with Emily Sullivan during the spurt to take a commanding 17-10 advantage. MU held on in the set for a 25-22 first-stanza victory.
The Herd jumped out of the gates quickly to own a 7-2 cushion in the second set. The Pirates worked their way back in the frame, slicing the MU lead to one point, 15-14. Holding the upper hand at 19-17, the pair of Sullivan and Elizabeth Fleming combined for a block, before Sullivan laced a service ace to increase the lead to four, 21-17. Herman ended the set by connecting for a kill to help earn the win, 25-21.
In the third set, ECU held the lead until the Herd recorded consecutive points thanks to a block from Cameron Yoho and Herman and an attacking error by the Pirates. The score was squared at 21-21, but the Herd was outscored 4-2 as ECU won the third frame, 25-23, to send the match to a fourth set.
MU rolled in the fourth set, 25-16, to knock off the Pirates for the second time this season.
Herman led the offensive charge for the Herd connecting for 19 kills and adding seven digs. Sullivan contributed 13 kills on a .345 attacking percentage (13K-3E-29TA), while Schad chipped in with 10 kills.

“Looking at the season as a whole, all I can say is that this group has been as fun a group to be around and coach as any I’ve had,” Jacobs said. “Excellent regular season, but now its tourney time and one-and-done time! A 22-8 record and 10 conference wins is a great start to our rebuilding. Now it’s easy to stay focused on match 31 and only match 31.”
The Herd will take part in the eight-team C-USA tournament, which begins on Friday, Nov. 20 in Houston, Texas at Rice University. Specific game times are TBA.

Stony Brook University Women's Volleyball Team Secures Postseason Seed Despite Loss to New Hampshire
Stony Brook, N.Y. (Nov. 14, 2009) – Despite losing its final regular season match, 3-2 (23-25, 20-25, 25-20, 25-17, 15-10), to New Hampshire on Saturday afternoon, Stony Brook University’s volleyball team secured itself a seed in the 2009 America East Championship next week. The two teams traded points before senior Lisa Doremus (Glendale, Ariz.) gave the Seawolves the lead again at 6-5. SBU would stay on top until the Wildcats used a 6-3 run to knot the score at 16-16. A block by Doremus and junior Ashley Headen (Alexandria, Va.) on the next play would put the Seawolves back on top for good as they held on for a 25-23 win. Calinda had a huge first set, recording seven kills and seven digs.
A back-and-forth start to the second set found the two teams knotted at five. SBU then went on to score five straight points, including three kills by Doremus, to break the game open. While the Wildcats kept within striking distance and did pull within one at 21-20, a kill and an ace from Doremus helped the Seawolves hold on for a two set advantage.
Stony Brook’s offense faltered in the third set, committing a match-high seven errors on its way to a .114 attack percentage. The Seawolves hung tough, however, and were leading at 11-9 on a kill from Calinda. Behind the attack of Lindsay Fogarty, UNH then went on a 9-1 run though, giving them a seven point advantage. SBU would fight its way back to within one at 20-19 on a block from Headen and freshman Sally Downs (Coppell, Texas), but a pair of kills from Kirsten Bates helped UNH hold on for the 25-20 win.
Riding the momentum of the third set, the Wildcats came out on fire in the fourth, jumping out to a 10-4 lead. UNH, which led from start to finish, would commit just one error the entire frame as it hit .455 as a team and forced a deciding fifth game.
The two teams opened the fifth set by trading kills back-and-forth. Stony Brook received a balanced offensive attack as four different players recorded kills on its way to a 7-6 lead. Stony Brook’s seventh point, a kill by senior Lindsey Gordon(N. Patchogue, N.Y.) would be the last kill recorded by the Seawolves, however, as they committed four attack errors down the stretch. UNH on the other hand committed just one error as it finished the match on a 9-3 run to complete the come from behind victory.
