Southern Miss Volleyball Falls to Marshall In Four

 

HUNTINGTON, W. Va. – The Southern Miss volleyball team fell to Marshall in four sets, (18-25, 19-25, 25-15, 24-26), falling to 13-3 on the year and 1-1 in league play.

 

Ashley Mell recorded a double-double with a team-high 11 kills and 19 digs.  Sarah Jane Bowden and Angela Hlavaty tallied eight kills apiece. Bowden had six total blocks.

 

Marshall rolled out to the early 12-6 lead to start the first set, but Southern Miss eventually cut the deficit to two, 18-16, behind kills from five different Eagles.  Following a Marshall timeout, the Herd then closed out the set with a 7-2 run to the 25-18 victory. 

A block by Herman and Sullivan, two kills, an ace and three Southern Miss miscues helped the Herd roll to an early 7-3 lead in the second set. The Eagles battled back to cut the lead to one on four occasions, but Marshall continued to keep its lead throughout the set in the 25-19 win.

 

Southern Miss jumped out to a commanding 10-3 lead to open the third set. Following a Sullivan kill for Marshall, the Eagles then put up seven consecutive points to take a 17-4 lead. From there Southern Miss cruised to a 25-15 win.

 

Both teams battled back-and-forth to start the fourth set. The set featured 19 ties and five lead changes. Neither team was able to build any kind of lead against each other. With the score knotted at 23-23, Caitlin Clark put down a kill, giving Southern Miss a 24-23 lead, but Marshall came back with a kill and two big blocks to take the final set, 26-24.

 

Southern Miss continues its road swing, traveling to East Carolina for a match Sunday at noon

 

College Volleyball Game Results 9/19: Manhattan College vs. Saint Peter's

Manhattan Falls In Five Sets at Saint Peter's
Lady Jaspers Go 1-1 On Opening MAAC Weekend

JERSEY CITY, N.J. - After going the distance with Rider in its Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) opener on Saturday afternoon, the Manhattan College volleyball team found itself engaged in another five-set struggle on Sunday.  Unfortunately, a different venue yielded a different result, as the Lady Jaspers (5-7, 1-1 MAAC) dropped a 24-26, 25-16, 25-20, 21-25, 15-9 decision to Saint Peter's (3-9, 1-1 MAAC) at the Yanitelli Center.  The Saint Peter's victory gave
each team a split on the first weekend of conference play.

The Peahens quickly took a 4-1 lead in the first set before Manhattan responded with the next four points and took a 5-4 lead on a service ace by Julie Bies (Massapequa, N.Y.).  Saint Peter's scored the next point to force a 5-5 tie, one of 15 deadlocks in the opening set.  With the score
knotted at 19-19, a kill by Jaci Rahey (West Milford, N.J.) ignited a 4-0 Manhattan run that gave the Lady Jaspers a 23-19 advantage.  Manhattan reached set point on a kill by Kelsey Huntoon (Monroe, Mich.) that made the score 24-20, but the Peahens fought off four set points to force a
24-24 tie.  After a Saint Peter's service error, Manhattan finally closed out the set, 26-24, on a block by Rita Welsh (Collegeville, Pa.).

Manhattan scored the first point of the second set, but the Peahens immediately responded with a 5-1 run to seize control.  After the Lady Jaspers reduced their deficit to three points at 11-8, Saint Peter's rallied for seven of the next eight points to run its lead back to nine, 18-9.  The Lady Jaspers responded by taking four of the next six points to get back within seven at 20-13, but Saint Peter's evened the match with a 25-16 set win.

The Lady Jaspers built a 3-1 edge early in the third set before Saint Peter's responded with a 6-2 rally to pull in front, 7-5.  Manhattan scored the next two points to tie it at 7-7, but Saint Peter's again responded, taking the next two points to regain a 9-7 lead.  After the Peahens extended their advantage to 14-11, Manhattan rallied for three straight points to force a 14-14 tie.  With the score
knotted at 17-17, Saint Peter's scored three straight points to go back in front, 20-17.  Manhattan scored the next two points, pulling within one on another Welsh ace, but Saint Peter's scored five of the final six points to claim the set, 25-20, and take a 2-1 lead in the match.

Knowing the fourth set was a must-win, Manhattan stormed out of the gate, scoring the first four points to force a Saint Peter's timeout.  The Peahens came back within one at 5-4 before the Lady Jaspers responded with a 5-2 run and took a 10-6 lead on a Diane Strutner (San Jose, Calif.) ace.
Manhattan increased its advantage to 16-8 on a block by Maddie Heck (Corte Madera, Calif.) and Rahey.  Saint Peter's climbed all the way back to within one at 22-21, but the Lady Jaspers took the final three points of the set and capped a 25-21 win on an ace by Welsh.

Saint Peter's scored the first three points of the fifth set and never trailed during the final frame.
Manhattan charged back to tie the score at 5-5 and 6-6, but each time the Peahens went back in front.  After Saint Peter's used a 4-0 rally to turn a 6-6 tie into a 10-6 advantage, the Lady Jaspers took the next point to pull back within three.  That's as close as Manhattan would get, however, as Saint Peter's hit .435 (11 kills, one error, 23 attempts) in the fifth set to claim a 15-9 win and seal
the victory.

Strutner notched her second straight double-double with 13 kills and 16 digs.  Rahey also had 13 kills, while Laura Bellotti (Dix Hills, N.Y.) tallied a double-double with 28 assists and 15 digs.
Playing libero for the first time in a Manhattan uniform, Aurore Kullak (Beloeil, Belgium) posted a match-high 28 digs.  Jayne Timo (Holbrook, N.Y.) added 12 digs, as the Lady Jaspers outdug the Peahens 90-82.  As a team, Manhattan hit .149 (48-23-168) in the match.

Kim Mendoza finished with a match-high 21 kills and added 11 digs for Saint Peter's.  Stephanie Phillips tallied 14 kills and 14 digs, and Kassi Wirth had 11 kills to go along with six blocks.
Shannon Doheny posted a double-double with 52 assists and 17 digs, and also recorded five kills on .444 hitting.  Yomi Angulo returned 24 digs for the Peahens.  Saint Peter's hit .230 (64-22-183)
as a team.

For the first time this season, Manhattan doesn't have a midweek non-conference match to prepare for before resuming MAAC play next weekend.  Instead, the Lady Jaspers have five days off before hosting Niagara (8-5, 1-1 MAAC) and Canisius (4-8, 1-1 MAAC) at Draddy Gymnasium.
The Purple Eagles visit Riverdale at 11 a.m. on Saturday, while Sunday's matchup with the Golden Griffins is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.  Both matches will be webstreamed live at

College Volleyball Game Results 9/19: Drake Over Bradley

Drake Volleyball Sweeps Bradley

DES MOINES, IOWA -- Led by a .330 attack percentage, the Drake volleyball team defeated Bradley 3-0 (25-18, 25-18, 25-17) to earn its first Missouri Valley Conference win of the season.

"This was the intensity we needed to bounce back and get that first conference win," said Drake head coach Phil McDaniel. "We blocked the ball well and played solid defense in the back row and those things allowed us to be effective in transition."

Game one was back and forth until Drake broke open a 16-16 tie, ending the game on a 9-2 run led by five Bradley attack errors and kills from senior outside hitter Emily Madden (Van Meter, Iowa (Adel DeSoto Minburn), sophomore middle blocker Michelle Reidy (Dubuque, Iowa/Wahlert Catholic) and junior outside hitter junior outside hitter Alisa DeBerg Roth (Hudson, Iowa/Hudson).

After another deadlock at 14-14 in game two, the Bulldogs went on a 6-0 run to take a 20-14 lead. The run was fueled by three Braves attack errors, a Reidy kill, a redshirt freshman Emily Heffernen (Manchester, Iowa/West Delaware)/DeBerg Roth block and a sophomore defensive specialist Erika Price (Littleton, Colo./Dakota Ridge) service ace.

Drake went on an early run 5-0 in game three, breaking an 8-8 tie to take a 13-8 lead. The Bulldogs would hold the lead for the remainder of the game, scoring the final four points on two kills from Reidy and a kill and service ace from sophomore outside hitter Mikayla Sims (Waterloo, Iowa/East).

Reidy had a team-leading .440 attack percentage, 12 kills and five blocks. DeBerg Roth and Sims added six kills and two blocks apiece. Madden ended the match with five kills, four digs and two blocks.

Senior setter Chelsea Lauersdorf (Watertown, Wis./Watertown) and sophomore setter Caitlin Johnson (Sycamore, Ill./Sycamore Community) split time at setter, recording 17 assists each. Junior libero Alana Wittenburg (Redlyn, Iowa/Wapsie Valley) led the defense with 24 digs, followed by senior defensive specialist Lindsay Schryver (Williams Bay, Wis./Williams Bay) with seven and Johnson with six.

The Bulldogs edged Bradley in kills (39-37), attack percentage (.330-.078), assists (37-33), digs (58-57) and blocks (6-0). The Braves held a 5-3 advantage in service aces.

Drake continues MVC play, traveling to Illinois State Friday (Sept. 25) for a 7 p.m. match and to Indiana State Saturday (Sept. 26) for a 6 p.m. match.

"We have two more tough conference opponents and we are on the road this time so we won't have that home crowd to support us," commented McDaniel. "Both teams play well in their home building so we need to have a good week of practice and maintain our focus."

College Volleyball Game Results 9/19: UCLA Upset By Cal State Fullerton, Wins Over Fordham

#7 UCLA Rebounds With Sweep of Fordham

Sept. 19, 2009 

FULLERTON, Calif. - One night after a stunning loss to Cal State Fullerton, the seventh-ranked Bruins bounced back with a sweep of Fordham on Saturday morning. Set scores were 25-12, 25-14, 25-27. Junior Dicey McGraw led the Bruins with 12 kills, while freshman Mari Hole added 10 kills and seven digs. 

The Bruins improve to 10-2 on the season and face Long Beach State at 5 p.m. Free audio will be available on UCLABruins.com. Fordham falls to 8-6. 

Sophomore Stephanie Nucci had 30 assists, while sophomore Katie Camp posted seven kills, five digs and five blocks. Sophomore Sara Sage added four kills and six blocks, freshman Rachael Kidder had seven kills and six blocks and freshman Bojana Todorovic posted 16 digs as the libero. UCLA rested regulars Amanda Gil, Lauren Cook and Kaitlin Sather. 

The Rams scored the first point of the match, but the lead was short-lived, as the Bruins came back with seven of the next eight points to take a 7-2 advantage. Todorovic served two aces during the run, Hole added one ace, McGraw and Camp had a combo block and three Fordham errors led to the seven points. Following a Fordham sideout, UCLA scored five in a row and eight of nine to increase its advantage to 11 at 15-4. Camp had four of the points on three kills and a solo block, Hole and Nucci added kills and Kidder posted an ace. 

Fordham came back with three in a row to cut its deficit to eight at 15-7, but a 6-1 UCLA run brought its lead to a set-best 13 at 21-8. Sage had a pair of kills during the run, Camp and Gera posted one spike apiece and Nucci served an ace. The Bruins had six service aces in the first, including one on set point by Kidder to win the opener 25-12. Camp had four kills and two blocks in the first, while Sage had three kills. The Bruins out-hit the Rams .323 to .094. 

Just like the first set, the Rams took an early lead with two of the first three points, but it was all Bruins after that. Tied at three, UCLA netted eight of the next 11 to go ahead 11-6. Kidder played a part in three points on an ace and two combo blocks, while Hole had three kills. The Rams scored four in a row to cut their deficit to one at 11-10, but the Bruins responded with a 9-1 run to take a 20-11 advantage. McGraw had a pair of kills, while Kidder and Sage each had a kill and a block. 

Leading 20-13, the Bruins scored five of the last six to win it 25-14. McGraw had two kills during the last run, as did Camp, who served the set clincher. The Bruins hit .207 in the second and held the Rams to a -.074 percentage. McGraw had six kills in the second, Hole had three and Kidder posted a kill, two aces and three blocks. 

The third set was a close one, but the Bruins pulled away at the end to complete the sweep. UCLA scored six of the first nine points to take an early advantage. Kidder had two kills and a block during the run. The Bruins never led by more than three though, and at 11-8, the Rams went on a 6-2 run to go ahead 14-13. UCLA responded with six of the next eight to go up 19-16. Hole had a pair of kills, Sage had two blocks and Kidder posted a kill and a roof. 

The Rams wouldn’t quit though, tying the set again at 19 and taking the lead back at 22-21. Fordham had its first set point at 24-22, but UCLA rallied with the next three on a Nucci kill, a Sage/Nucci block and a Camp ace to make it 25-24 Bruins. After a sideout by the Rams tied it at 25, Hole had a kill to give the Bruins their second set point and a Sage solo block won the set 27-25 and completed the sweep. Kidder had five kills and three blocks in the third, Hole added six kills and McGraw posted five spikes. The Bruins out-hit the Rams .267 to .154.

Katie Wells led the Rams with nine kills, as Fordham hit .082 as a team.

Seventh-Ranked Bruins Swept by Long Beach State

Sept. 19, 2009 

FULLERTON, Calif. - For the second night in a row, the seventh-ranked Bruins were defeated by a Big West Conference opponent, as Long Beach State swept UCLA on Saturday night at Titan Gym. Set scores were 25-19, 25-16, 25-14. Junior Dicey McGraw led the Bruins with nine kills and six digs. 

The Bruins fall to 10-3 on the season, while the 49ers improve to 7-3. 

Sophomore Amanda Gil had six kills and no errors in 10 attacks for a .600 hitting percentage, sophomore Katie Camp had five kills and five blocks and sophomore Lainey Gera added 12 digs. The Bruins hit .120 as a team and never led at any point in the match. 

The 49ers scored the first seven points of the match and were never threatened in winning the opener. The Bruins closed to within three on a few occasions, but got no closer, losing 25-19. Camp had three kills in the first, as the Bruins were out-hit .370 to .225. 

The Bruins were tied at one and three in the second set, but the 49ers scored the next three and never trailed for the rest of the second. UCLA could not string more than three points together and got no closer than two the remainder of the way, falling 25-16. UCLA was led by McGraw’s three kills in the second, while Camp added four blocks. The Bruins hit .000 in the set, while the 49ers hit at a .312 clip. 

Things went from bad to worse in the third set, as the 49ers recorded another wire-to-wire victory after scoring the first five points. The Bruins were unable to score more than two points in a row and ended up dropping the set 25-14. McGraw had four kills and no errors in the third, while freshman Mari Hole posted three kills. 

Naomi Washington paced Long Beach State with 13 kills, while Brittney Herzog added 10. Long Beach State hit .398 as a team. 

The Bruins look to the right the ship next weekend when they open Pac-10 play on the road. UCLA faces Arizona State on Friday and Arizona on Saturday. Both matches start at 7 p.m. and will have Gametracker on the schedule page of UCLABruins.com.

College Volleyball Game Results 9/19: IPFW vs. South Dakota State

Mastodons Trample Jackrabbits 3-0

Fort Wayne, IN - After back-to-back five-set matches for the IPFW Mastodons, the hosts were able to rest their legs by making quick work of the visitors from South Dakota State, sweeping the Jackrabbits, 25-13, 25-21, 25-20.

Rebekah Roehm knocked down a match-high 15 kills, her seventh consecutive match with double figure kills. Stephanie Lamberti and Alli Hook each picked up seven kills, as Shannon Reuter dished out 34 assists in the three sets, and Taryn Parker blocking a total of six kill attempts. Senior Jamie Schwartz picked up a match-best 13 digs, her sixth straight match of double figure digs, as Lamberti chipped in a dozen, as the junior finished just three kills shy of her second straight double-double.

IPFW finished with 10 total blocks, and hit at a .259 percentage, their third highest total of the season, while holding South Dakota State to just .073 (29 kills, 21 errors, 109 attempts), including -.111 (6 kills, 9 errors, 27 attempts) in the opening set.

The Mastodons (7-6, 2-2 Summit League) jumped out to a furious start, shrugging off the rust from last night's five-set match by going on runs of 4-0 and 3-0 to take a 7-2 lead, forcing a South Dakota State timeout. After a Kaitlin Klingemann kill, IPFW pounded out three more kills in a row, from Schlindwein, Parker, and Lamberti, to lead 10-3.

The `Jacks (7-6, 2-2 Summit League) scored three consecutive to climb to within four, until an IPFW 4-0 run gave the `Dons their largest lead of the match at 14-6. The host Blue and White used a late 3-0 run to push ahead to 20-11, and then rounding out the frame on a 4-0 run, including a block and a kill from Hook.

IPFW quickly got out of the gate in the second set, scoring the first five points of the frame, capped by a Schwartz ace, as the `Dons never trailed in the set. South Dakota State quickly responded with a 4-0 run of her own to cut the deficit to one, as the teams traded sideouts for the next six possessions, putting the `Dons ahead 10-8.

Back-to-back 3-0 runs pushed IPFW ahead by seven at 16-9, until South Dakota State used a 3-0 and 4-0 run to once again close to within a point at 17-16. IPFW was able to used four consecutive 2-0 runs, including a final one on kills by Lamberti and Hook, which helped the Mastodons pull away in the 25-21 second set.

South Dakota State came out firing to open the third set, taking their first sustained lead of the match, jumping ahead by as many as four at 7-3, before IPFW fought back to knot the set at eight apiece after a Lamberti kill, a Roem/Hook combo block, and a SDSU attack error.

The Jackrabbits re-took the lead at 9-8, their last lead of the match, before a hook kill, a McGill kill and a pair of Roehm kills put the hosts ahead 12-9. Three straight SDSU points tied the match, before Parker and Roehm knocked down back-to-back kills to give the Mastodons a lead they would not give up for the remainder of the match.

IPFW pulled away late with runs of 4-0 and 3-0 to lead 23-16, cruising to the 25-20 third-set win.

Ellyce Youngren led SDSU with eight kills, with Kaitlin Klingemann adding seven, as the pair had over half of the team's 29 total kills. Thyele Rechatiko dished out 20 assists, with Emily Palmer recording 10 digs.

The Mastodons take to the road for the next two weeks, as next weekend they travel to Oral Roberts on Friday, September 25, and at Centenary on September 26. The following week the `Dons take the road to Wright State on Tuesday, September 29, before opening the month of October with a trip to Oakland University on Friday, October 2.

College Volleyball Game Results 9/19: Temple vs. Penn State in front of 3,813

Volleyball Sweeps St. Francis; Falls to Top-Ranked Penn State
3,813 on hand in State College as Owls face Nittany Lions for the second time

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. – The Temple volleyball team split matches in State College on Saturday, sweeping St. Francis (Pa.) in the afternoon before falling 3-0 to the top-ranked Penn State Nittany Lions. A crowd of 3,813 was on hand to see the Owls play two-time defending national champs Penn State, who won their 76th consecutive match.

In the early match, Temple swept the Red Flash of St. Francis by scores of 25-18, 25-13 and 25-16

Senior Yun Yi Zhang registered a double-double in the win against St. Francis with a match-high 15 kills along with 12 digs.

The Owls were impressive both offensively and defensively, hitting .359 as a team and tallying 57 digs to the Red Flash's 40.

Senior setter Jackie Morrison recorded assists on 33 of Temple's 42 kills as well as tallying five kills of her own, and nine digs.

Zhang led the Owls once again vs. Penn State, knocking down 14 kills and recording five digs. Morrison tallied four kills to go along with 19 assists and four digs.

Three-time All-American Megan Hodge led Penn State with 24 kills as Temple lost by scores of 25-16, 25-13 and 25-12.

Temple came out strong in front of the impressive crowd, keeping with the NIttany Lions early at 4-4. Penn State pulled ahead 17-9, but Zhang got the Owls back into it with four kills in six points to pull within 19-13. From there, attack errors on Temple followed by back-to-back Penn State kills ended the set in favor of the Nittany Lions.

The Owls begin the Atlantic-10 season next weekend with two home matches. First up is Charlotte on Friday, Sept. 25 at 7:00 p.m. in McGonigle Hall.

College Volleyball Game Results Today 9/19: Eastern Washington vs. Montana State

Eastern Washington led by Hills' 21 kills, plays next at Idaho State on Friday

The Eastern Washington University volleyball team got its first weekend of Big Sky Conference 

play off to a perfect start, moving to 2-0 in league play with a home win over Montana State, 25-

14, 25-21, 25-17 on Saturday evening (Sept. 19).

"It was the first match we won this year, 3-0," head coach Miles Kydd said. "It is nice to not have 

to play any extra sets."

Eastern Washington was led offensively by Hayley Hills, who had 21 kills, a season high for any 

Eagle and an especially impressive number considering the match went just three sets. She also 

hit .229 in the contest (21-10-48). In the third set alone, she had 11 kills and hit .400 (11-3-20).

"This was the first time Hayley went off this year," Kydd said. "When she is hot, we try to get her 

the ball and let her go."

Two Eagles hit .300 or higher tonight, including Chenoa Coviare (.312, 6-1-16) and Cora 

Kellerman (.300, 5-2-10). Ashley Hamilton tallied 34 assists in the contest.

Defensively, JaNae Mortensen set the team pace in digs with 18, while Jacque Brown was just 

behind her with 16. Hills contributed 11 digs to record her fourth double-double of the campaign 

and second in two nights.

Eastern (6-5, 2-0 BSC) pulled away in the first set, jumping out to a 21-12 lead before prevailing 25-14.

The second set, however, saw Montana State (2-9, 0-2 BSC) stay right with the Eagles, even 

jumping out to an early 13-6 lead. At that point, Eastern Washington went on an 8-1 run to tie the 

set, 14-14, and the teams stayed close until 21-21. At that point, EWU went on another 4-0 spurt 

to win 25-21.

"My only disappointment (tonight) was in our second set when we were down 13-6," Kydd said. 

"Other than that, I thought we did well tonight."

In set three, Eastern went up 15-9 and 21-12 before claiming a 25-17 win.

Another nice crowd of 1,061 cheered on the Eagles tonight (1,311 saw EWU defeat Montana 3-1 

last night, the team's largest crowd in three years).

The Eagles now hit the road for their first two Big Sky matches away from home. On Friday 

(Sept. 25), Eastern Washington plays Idaho State (5-6, 1-1 BSC) at 6 p.m. Pacific Time.

College Volleyball Game Results Today 9/19: New Mexico vs. Arizona

Wildcats Edge Lobos, 3-2

 

Arizona wins match after dropping second and third set, respectively.  They’ll take on UTEP tomorrow at 11 a.m.

 

TUCSON, Ariz. – Forced to play five sets for the first time all season, the Wildcats bounced back after dropping sets two and three to ultimately beat New Mexico in five sets. Set scores were 26-24, 14-25, 12-25, 25-14, 15-13.

 

Tiffany Owens notched a career-high 29 kills for Arizona which only hit .116 and recorded 52 kills through five sets.

 

“New Mexico is a darn good team.  I knew they would come out and play well,” said Dave Rubio.  “Jeff (Miller)’s teams are always well-prepared and always compete.  I was really impressed with the fight they showed out there tonight. We had hardly any offense tonight but we just found a way to get it done.  I was proud in game four when we came back and game five could have gone either way and I’m just happy we were able to pull it out.”

 

Play was tight throughout set one as the Wildcats benefited from a few close calls by officials.  After it was tied 24 all, the Cats took the next two points and the match for the early 1-0 lead.  It was by far their closest set one win this season as they have not dropped their opening set against any opponent.

 

Games two and three were quite a different story as Arizona only could muster 14 and 12 points respectively in those sets.  Salpointe Catholic grad and New Mexico setter Jade Michaelsen was key for the Lobos over this stretch as her team looked to put the match out of reach.

 

The Wildcats would bounce back however on their home-court.  Aided by better accuracy, Arizona went onto win the set 25-14 and forced a deciding fifth game.

 

Play would go back-and-forth in the determining game with Arizona trying to pull away but New Mexico responding to the Wildcat challenges.  It wasn’t until Arizona sealed the win with a kill from Dana Hutchinson that the home team (and crowd) could breath a sigh of relief.

 

Owens, who also posted a season-high with 59 attempts to go with her career-high in kills, still managed to tally a solid hitting percentage of .373.

 

“I’m happy, I’m shocked,” said Owens.  “I had no idea I had that many kills.”

 

Alanna Resch was the only Wildcat with double-digit digs with 13.  The Lobos recorded more kills, less errors and hit for a better percentage than Arizona but down the stretch, the Cats made the big plays when it counted.

 

“We are not going to take anything for granted,” added Rubio. “Tomorrow will be a tough match.  At this point, we are trying to build a case for the postseason and I think we have made a good start to that.”

 

Tomorrow Arizona will take on UTEP at 11 a.m. to begin day two action of the Arizona Invitational.  UTEP fell to New Mexico today in three sets.

 

 

College Volleyball Game Results Today 9/19: Portland Succombs to CSUN

Pilots Conclude California Road Trip, Fall to Cal State Northridge

 

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. -- The Portland Pilots wrapped up its three-match road trip in Southern California by falling 3-0 to non-conference opponent Cal State Northridge Saturday night at The Matadome in Northridge, Calif. CSUN (4-8) won by scores of 25-21, 25-13 and 25-18.

Freshman Kate Bostwick came off the bench to lead the Pilots with a team-high five kills. Senior Maria Clemens posted four kills and also added five digs and four blocks. Sophomore Marissa Plummer had a match-high five blocks and also three kills.

 

CSUN was led by junior Brittany Williams’ match-high 12 kills.

 

The Pilots now sit at 3-11 overall. They return home to face Seattle in their final non-conference match on Wednesday, Sept. 30 at 7:00 p.m. in the Chiles Center.

College Volleyball Game Results Today 9/19: Portland Over Fresno State Volleyball Team

Sister Act Leads Portland Pilots to Sweep Over Fresno State Volleyball Team

 

LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- The Clemens' sisters recorded 28 of the team's 47 total kills to help the Portland Pilots sweep the Fresno State Bulldogs on Saturday morning at the Galen Centre in Los Angeles, Calif. The Pilots won by scores of 26-24, 26-24 and 25-19. 

Junior Jessica Clemens registered a match-high 16 kills to complement her 12 digs for her fifth double-double of the season.

 

Senior Maria Clemens posted 12 kills on a team-high .435 hitting percentage and also added three blocks.

 

Junior Danielle Dupar recorded the match-high 14 digs. Meanwhile Kaylyn Jones added 12 digs as well as 25 assists.

 

Freshman Ariel Usher ended the match with eight kills and four blocks, while senior Shelley Sievers had four blocks and two kills. 

Portland (3-10) hit .264 for the match and held the Bulldogs (7-4) to 165.

The first set was a back-and-forth affair that saw 10 tie scores and six lead changes. Fresno State owned the lead until a Maria Clemens kill tied it up at 15-15. Portland trailed by two at 22-20. From there, a Bulldog error and a service ace from Jessica Clemens would even the score at 22.

 

A kill from each of the Clemens’ sisters would propel the Pilots to match point at 24-22. But Fresno State refused to back down and evened it up for what would be the last time at 24 with two kills. Marissa Plummer would rip a kill before a big block from Sievers and Usher would close out the set.

 

The second set was more of the same with 11 ties and four lead changes. The Pilots took the early lead at 5-2 before the Bulldogs would fight back to even it up at 6-6. Fresno State would take a four point lead at 14-10. Trailing at 17-14, a Maria Clemens kill would spark a four-point-run that included a kill by sister Jessica as well as one by Sievers putting UP ahead at 18-17.

 

Fresno State would reclaim the lead at 20-18 forcing a Portland timeout. From there, Jessica Clemens seemed to heat up blasting kills all over the court to earn Portland its next five points. The two teams were tied back up at 21, and again at 22 and 23. This time it was a Maria Clemens kill that gave UP the lead at 24-23. The Pilots would claim the set 26-24 courtesy of an Usher kill and a Maria Clemens block solo.

 

The Bulldogs, trying to force a fourth set, came out strong in the third to lead by four points at 8-4 and again at 15-11. With a 6-3 run UP finally grabbed the lead at 18-17. A Bulldog kill tied the score at 18 but back-to-back points for the Pilots brought UP ahead at 20-18. Kills from Maria Clemens gave Portland three of its last five points to finish off the Bulldogs, combined with kills from Usher and Sievers.

 

Fresno State was led by 10 kills from Baylee Platt, while Brianna Clarke and Kelly Leonardo each added seven kills.

 

Portland next plays Cal State Northridge on Saturday night at 7:00 p.m. at The Matadome in Northridge, Calif.

#25 PEPPERDINE WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL FALLS AGAIN AT #4 HAWAII

 

HONOLULU, Hawaii – The #25 Pepperdine women’s volleyball team lost at #4 Hawaii for the second straight night, dropping a 25-17, 25-17, 25-17 non-conference decision on Saturday.

 

The Waves (7-5) also lost to the Rainbow Wahine (9-2) in three sets on Friday night at the Stan Sheriff Center.

 

Senior outside hitter Rachel Grochmal (Brea, Calif./Brea Olinda HS) led the Waves with eight kills. Sophomore outside hitter Lilla Frederick (Huntington Beach, Calif./Cornelia Connelly HS), sophomore opposite Kristen Seaton (Terre Haute, Ind./South Vigo HS) and sophomore middle blocker Kim Hill (Portland, Ore./Portland Christian HS) had five kills apiece.

 

Sophomore libero Stevi Robinson (Hermosa Beach, Calif./Mira Costa HS) led Pepperdine’s defensive effort with 17 digs.

 

Hawaii outhit Pepperdine .230-.125 and had advantages of 7-2 in service aces and 7-4 in blocks.

 

Though Hawaii scored the first three points of the match, the Waves settled down and eventually took the lead at 13-12 after two Rainbow Wahine attack errors and a kill by Grochmal. The Waves trailed by only one point at 16-15 after a kill by senior setter Kiah Fiers (Palos Verdes Estates, Calif./Peninsula HS), but Hawaii then scored seven straight points. A block by freshman middle blocker Victoria Adelhelm (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif./Santa Fe Christian HS) and Seaton finally ended the run, but the Rainbow Wahine ended the set a few points later.

 

Grochmal scored the first point of the second set on a kill, but Hawaii rolled off the next six points. Pepperdine would get no closer than three points the rest of the set, including at 16-13 after a kill by Frederick and a UH attack error.

 

The Waves fell behind early in the third set as well, trailing 7-2. They would get within one point at 15-14 after a kill by Grochmal and two Hawaii attack errors. But the Rainbow Wahine effectively put the match away by scoring the next six points. A Grochmal kill stopped the run and made it 21-15, but Hawaii would go on to win from there.

 

Hawaii was led by 11 kills from Kanani Danielson and 10 by Stephanie Ferrell.

 

The Waves take a week off before beginning West Coast Conference play at home on October 1 and 3 against Saint Mary’s and San Diego, respectively.

College Volleyball Game Results Today 9/18: University of Illinois at Chicago vs. University of Wisconsin Milwaukee

Flames Sweep Past Panthers
UIC downs UWM in three sets

CHICAGO - Nicole Allgood and Kelsey Safranek had 10 kills apiece as the University of Illinois at Chicago claimed a 25-21, 25-22, 25-22 win over the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Saturday afternoon at the Flames Athletic Center.

UIC (4-8, 1-0 Horizon) rode fast starts in each of the first two sets to take control of the contest. Then, the Flames used a late surge to win the third set and the match, becoming the first Horizon League team to record a 3-0 sweep of UWM since 2005.

Jena Berg had nine kills and Kerri Schuh eight for Milwaukee (4-9, 1-1), which hit just .119 in the contest and could never really get on track. UIC tallied 10 blocks in the match and outdug the Panthers, 59-51.

"They were really excited ... they were fired up," UWM head coach Susie Johnson said of UIC. "This is a big match for them. It affected us, how hard they came out. I have been trying to prepare the team for this, because when you are picked first, when you've been winning year after year, teams generally play hard against us and play with a lot of heart. That's just what they did."

UIC wasted little time in taking control of the opening set, scoring eight of the first 11 points before eventually leading 11-5 on a UWM error. The Flames extended their edge to 17-8 after another Panther error and then led 21-11 on a kill by Allgood. Milwaukee did put some pressure on down the stretch, closing all the way back to within 24-21 while fighting off five set-point opportunities. But, a kill by Epiphany Davis ended the first set in favor of UIC.

Unfortunately for the Panthers, the second set followed a similar script. UIC scored 10 of the first 13 points and led 13-7 after a kill by Lana Lobdell. The Flames' advantage was still 20-15 following another kill by Lobdell, but UWM did rally from there. An ace by Samantha Trawitzke pulled Milwaukee within 20-17 and a kill by Melissa Jansen brought the Panthers within a point at 22-21. But two-straight UIC points helped stem the tide and, after a kill by Schuh made it 24-22, a tip-kill by Davis put the Flames in control of the match.

Milwaukee started better in the third frame, building a 7-5 edge on a kill by Schuh. But, UIC countered with five of the next six points to take a 10-8 lead. The Panthers eventually trailed 16-13 before scoring three-straight to tie the frame at 16. UIC then put together what would be the deciding run, scoring five-straight to claim control. The Panthers were able to crawl back within 24-22, but a UWM service error ended the match.

UWM returns to action with just a single match next weekend, heading up I-43 Friday for a contest against Green Bay at the Kress Events Center. The match begins at 7 p.m.

College Volleyball Game Results Today 9/19: UTEP vs. New Mexico, 3 - 0

EL PASO – The UTEP volleyball team fell to New Mexico, 3-0, with scores of 28-26, 25-12 and 25-23 at the University of Arizona Invitational in Tucson on Saturday afternoon.

Knooted up early in the first after jumping to a 3-0 lead, UTEP ran off to a 14-9 lead holding the advantage until the Lobos caught up on a Miner error at 20. After a second consecutive error to relent the lead, UTEP went up 23-21 on a pair of kills courtesy of Sanders and Chavez. UNM tied the match three more times at 24, 25 and 26 before taking the set on two kills at 28-26.

The Miners once again took an early lead to begin the second stanza, but the Lobos regained the momentum that had carried them through the first to take control of the set at 8-7. UNM quickly extended the lead and never looked back to take a 2-0 match lead.

UNM appeared to be on the brink of another easy set at 9-3 when UTEP mounted a 8-2 run to even things out at 11. The Miners scored on the next three rallies to take a 14-11 advantage and the Lobos answered with three consecutive points to close the gap. After an exchange of kills UTEP found a 21-18 lead looking to force a fourth frame. A kill and two blocks later, however, sparked UNM to another tie and the Lobos took advantage of a Miner error to finish off the match with a kill and a service ace.

Amy Sanders led all Miners with 10 kills, eight digs and four blocks. Catherine Chavez tallied a team-leading 12 digs and added six kills.

UTEP (7-5, 0-1) returns to the McKale Center on Sunday to face Arizona (9-0, 0-0) at 12 p.m.
