University of Utah Volleyball Team Releases 2010 Schedule

Utes to play at Crimson Court 12 times during regular season.

 

SALT LAKE CITY – Ten matchups against schools that qualified for last season’s NCAA Tournament will be featured on the 2010 University of Utah volleyball schedule, released by head coach Beth Launiere Wednesday.

 

Following a 17-12 record with a 10-6 conference mark last season, Utah will continue its tradition of taking on a challenging schedule.

 

“The Mountain West Conference is going to be very strong this year with a few teams with a lot of experience,” Launiere said. “We believe our preseason schedule will prepare us well for the competitiveness of the conference.”

 

Launiere is entering her 21st season as Utah’s head coach with a 408-224 (.646) record at the only school in which she has been a head coach.

 

The Utes will be confronted in 2010 with a schedule full of opponents from premier conferences across the nation, including Big Ten Conference foes Michigan and Northwestern, Ole Miss of the SEC, Oklahoma of the Big XII, Saint Louis of the Atlantic 10 as well as Pac-10 member Arizona State.

 

“Playing teams such as Michigan and Oklahoma gives us a gauge of how we will compete at the national level,” Launiere said. “We’re playing a lot of teams that are traditionally in the top 25 nationally.”

 

Utah will host 12 matches at Crimson Court during the 2010 regular season, starting with the annual Utah Classic, Aug. 27-28. The Utes will entertain Utah State and UC Davis.  

 

Utah wraps up its season-opening three-match homestand with a mid-week contest against Utah Valley on Sept. 1, before heading to the Northwestern Challenge in Chicago, Ill., for its first road action of the season. The Utes will take on Morehead State, Ole Miss and the host Wildcats, Sept. 3-4.

 

The Utes will then head to the Missouri State Tournament in Springfield, Mo., Sept. 10-11 for matches against Missouri State and 2009 NCAA Tournament participants Saint Louis and Oklahoma.

 

Utah will conclude its early-season tournament action at the Arizona State Tournament, Sept. 17-18 in Phoenix, Ariz. Utah will face Pacific before taking on Michigan, who has reached the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament the past two seasons. The Utes will play the host Sun Devils in the final match of the event.

 

“We have a stretch of three weekends in a row on the road,” Launiere said. “We purposefully did not schedule any mid-week matches during this span so we can focus on these tournaments. Good teams have to learn to compete and win on the road. It will be a challenge but has the opportunity to be a great learning experience for our team.”

 

Utah then begins Mountain West Conference action with a pair of home matches against Wyoming and reigning champion Colorado State Sept. 23-25.

 

The opening Deseret First Duel volleyball match of the season against BYU will be played Oct. 1 at Smith Fieldhouse in Provo, Utah. The second Deseret First Duel match is Oct. 23 at Crimson Court.

 

The NCAA Tournament begins Dec. 2 with the first and second rounds. The NCAA Championship will be hosted at the Sprint Energy Center in Kansas, Mo., Dec. 16-18.

 

Start times and television coverage for selected matches will be announced at a later date.

Dana Powell and Kendra Kahanek each recorded 10 kills to lead SMU to a 3-0 victory over Houston at Moody Coliseum in Dallas, Texas. Sidney Stewart and Kathryn Wilkerson led the team with 12 digs apiece for the Mustangs. Freshman Tara Roenicke paced Houston (7-19, 4-7 C-USA) with 26 assists and 10 digs for her eighth career double-double. Both junior Marluci Toazzi and freshman Jasmine Terry recorded a team-high 12 kills.

MOBILE, Ala. - The University of Denver volleyball team (11-13, 6-4 SBC) outlasted the South Alabama Jaguars (11-14, 2-10 SBC) 3-2 (25-22, 25-16, 14-25, 16-25, 16-14) on the road in Jag Gym as senior Emmy Davidsmeyer (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and Alexis Ninos (Cypress, Texas) led the Pioneers for the second-straight match with 16 and 10 kills, respectively.

 

"It was a tale of two matches tonight,” said head coach Beth Kuwata. “We played great volleyball in the first two sets and then just let them get the momentum back in the third and fourth set. Emmy really stepped up for us in the fifth set and her leadership was one of the keys to our win tonight.”

 

To go along with her 16 kills, Davidsmeyer finished the night with nine blocks, tying her career-high, and also registering six digs.

 

Returning to the setter position for the Pioneers senior Clare Maxwell (Western Springs, Ill.) finished the night with 37 assists and is now just 22 away from becoming the all-time assists leader in DU volleyball history. Maxwell also finished with eight kills and a .316 hitting percentage to go along with ffive digs and three blocks.

 

Leading the way defensively was libero Kacie Wikierak (Crystal Lake, Ill.) as she finished with 17 digs to add to her four assists and three service aces.

 

Juliana Almeida led the scoring efforts for the Jaguars as she tallied 21 kills and a .386 hitting percentage, while Hristina Markova added 15 kills. Turning in an outstanding performance at the net was Lindsay Schwartz as she registered 11 blocks to compliment her seven kills,

 

Denver remains on the road, traveling to Denton, Texas to face North Texas in another SBC match-up on Monday, Oct. 26.

College Volleyball Game Results Yesterday 10/24: Wisconsin Badgers down Northwestern 3-1

The Wisconsin volleyball team returned to the .500 mark in Big Ten Conference play on Saturday when it beat Northwestern by a score of 25-19, 19-25, 25-23, 25-20. The Badgers wrap up the first half of conference play in a tie for fifth place.

“That was a good win tonight,” said head coach Pete Waite. “We responded well after coming off the loss last night and we saw a much better offensive performance. The blocking was very strong and so that helped.”

The Badgers’ (10-9 overall, 5-5 Big Ten) offense returned to full form, after struggling on Friday against No. 8 Illinois. Three players scored double-digit kills as Brittney Dolgner led the way with 17. Kirby Toon scored 13 kills and Elle Ohlander put down 10. Toon also led all Badgers with a career-high .407 hitting percentage. Wisconsin hit .267 as a team, putting away 59 kills while Northwestern hit .224 and tallied 63 kills.

Janelle Gabrielsen directed the UW offense, putting up 46 assists, while adding eight digs and two blocks.

Ohlander helped slow Northwestern’s offense, stuffing a match-high seven shots, which also tied her season high. UW tied its season high in blocks with 14. The Wildcats had nine team blocks.

Kim Kuzma also had a strong defensive performance, totaling a match-high 19 digs. Dolgner tallied 13 digs.

Toon contributed heavily on both sides of the ball as she had a career-high five blocks and tied her career-high with 10 digs.

Wisconsin scored on six service aces, from six different players, and had only two service errors. The Wildcats had four aces.

Northwestern (11-11, 2-8) saw strong offensive production from its team, with four players scoring double-digit kills. Both Sabel Moffett and Alexandra Ayers scored 16 kills for the Wildcats, while Elyse Glab dished out 55 assists. The Wildcats did out-dig the Badgers (77-69) and had five players with double-digit digs. Kate Nobilio led Northwestern with 17 saves.

The Badgers jumped out to an early 11-5 lead in the first set after stringing together a 7-2 run. UW cruised to a 25-19 set victory and showed a vast improvement over Friday’s offensive woes, hitting .405 percent of their shots. Dolgner led all players with six kills.

Both teams continuously exchanged points in the second set until the score was tied at 10. The Wildcats began to pull away and went on a 7-2 run to take a 17-12 advantage. Wisconsin was unable to recover the deficit and dropped the set 25-19.

Northwestern once again pulled away in the middle of the third set, using a 4-0 scoring run to take a 17-13 lead. Down late in the set 22-17, the Badgers would claw back and make an 8-1 run, netting a 25-23 set victory. Neither team excelled offensively as Wisconsin hit only .064 percent of its shots, while Northwestern had a .042 hitting percentage.

“The turning point was in the third set when we were down late in the game,” Waite said. “That’s a pretty strong turn of events. It shows the composure of the team to hold them off and come back and get that. It really gave our team a lot of confidence going into the fourth [set].  We had a number of people step up offensively.”

 

With the score knotted up at 10 in the fourth set, the Badgers gained a two-point advantage to take a 12-10 lead. Wisconsin continued to work off of this lead and began to pull away as it soon controlled the match by a score of 22-17. The Badgers closed out the match with a 25-20 victory.

 

The Badgers open the second half of the Big Ten season on the road at Michigan and Michigan State next weekend.

Four players for Baylor had at least 13 kills

 

MANHATTAN, Kan. – No. 24 Baylor got a career-high 14 kills from Elizabeth Graham and came back from down a set to beat Kansas State 3-1 (18-25, 25-16, 25-18, 30-28) in Manhattan, Kan. on Saturday night.

 

Baylor dropped the first set 25-18, but shredded the Kansas State defense for the next two sets before grinding out a 30-28 fourth-set win. The fourth set featured 19 ties and 13 lead changes, and saw Baylor turn away KSU set points on three separate occasions with big kills from Torri Campbell and Katie Sanders.

 

Along with Graham, Sanders and Campbell each had 14 kills, while middle blocker Anna Breyfogle racked up 13 kills with a .458 hitting percentage. The quartet combined for 55 of Baylor’s 67 kills in the match. The Bears hit .256 as a team with those 67 kills and just 24 errors in 168 total attempts. The Bears had at least 20 kills in each of the last two sets, including a third set in which they had 21 kills and just two errors for a .538 hitting percentage in that frame.

 

On defense, Baylor responded to KSU’s .310 first-set hitting percentage, holding the Wildcats to .000 in the second set, .194 in the third, and .091 in the fourth with solid blocking and tenacious back-row play. Breyfogle, the Big 12’s blocking leader, had seven blocks on the night, along with Graham’s six and Campbell’s four. Allison King and Sanders each had 18 digs to lead the Bears in the back row. Setter Taylor Barnes, who had a season-high 54 assists, racked up 14 digs as well to give her a double-double along with Sanders and King, who added 10 assists to her 18 digs.

 

In the first set, Baylor jumped out to a 12-9 lead with back-to-back kills by Torri Campbell, but KSU responded with a 3-0 run to tie the score. Baylor had one more lead at 17-16 with a kill from Ashlie Christenson before the Wildcats put on a 6-0 run to seize control of the set. Baylor got just one more point in the set, but KSU closed with a 4-0 on two Baylor hitting errors and a set error.

 

The teams traded point-for-point early in the second set, but Baylor grabbed hold of the set after a timeout down 13-11. The Bears went on a 4-0 run with kills from Graham and Sanders to lead 16-13, then put on another 4-0 run with back-to-back blocks and a Breyfogle kill. Barnes closed it out with a second-touch kill for a 25-16 win.

 

In the third set, the Bears controlled from the beginning with a 3-0 start on three consecutive kills by Graham. Baylor pushed the lead to 16-11 with a Jordan Rice service ace and then held off the charging Wildcats with a 4-0 run on kills from Graham, Sanders and Campbell. Fittingly, Graham, who started with three kills, finished off the set with a kill for a 25-18 set win.

 

The fourth set was down to the wire, with both teams hustling down digs and grinding out kills. The teams tied the score eight times to make it 10-10, but Baylor went on a 4-0 run with two kills from Sanders and one from Graham. The Wildcats tied the score at 18-18, then took a 21-19 lead before Baylor responded with three consecutive points with a kill from Breyfogle and a Caitlyn Trice service ace. The Bears then fought off a furious KSU rally, including three set-points. Twice, Torri Campbell got kills, then the Bears got their break with a set-point after a KSU error. Sophomore Qian Zhang finished off the match with her only kill of the night.

 

The Bears (18-4, 7-4 Big 12) will be back on the road for their next match on Wednesday, Oct. 28, at Iowa State. The first serve between the Cyclones and Baylor is set for 6:30 p.m.

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Despite a season-high 14 kills from senior Brittany Williams and a double-double from sophomore Nicole Tate, the University of Kansas volleyball team dropped a four-set decision to rival Missouri Saturday night. The Jayhawks won the first set 25-22 but lost 25-21, 25-17 and 26-24 in the final three sets.

 

With the loss, KU dropped to 11-9 overall and 4-7 in the Big 12. Missouri improved to 13-9 on the season and 5-6 in the league.

 

The Tigers were led by Paola Ampudia, who recorded a program-best 35 kills. The 35 tallies were also a Big 12 Conference four-set record.

 

The outlook was promising for the Jayhawks in the fourth set, as KU held a 22-16 lead. However, Missouri came back with five-straight points to come within one point of the Jayhawks’ lead. The teams traded points before MU closed the frame with four unanswered points to seal the victory, 26-24.

 

Junior Karina Garlington led Kansas with 15 kills on the night, while hitting at a .481 attack percentage. Williams’ collected her 14 kills on a team-best .458 clip.

 

The KU back court was held down by junior libero Melissa Manda, who scooped up 19 digs. She was joined in double figures by Tate. Tate recorded 10 digs and 51 assists en route to her eighth double-double this year. Williams also aided the KU defense notching five total blocks. Sophomore Lauren Hagan added three.

 

In the first set, the Jayhawks took over the lead at 11-10 and never trailed for the remainder of the frame. Williams scored five kills in the opening set on a red-hot .833 attack percentage. Senior Paige Mazour also had five of her six kills on the night in the first set behind a .444 hitting efficiency.

 

The Jayhawks fell behind, 16-11, in the second set following a 7-1 run by the Tigers. Down the stretch, Kansas took over the momentum scoring six of the final nine point and stalled match-point three times, but the push was too late as MU recorded a 25-21 win.

 

In the third set, KU fell behind early and never could find the offensive answer it needed as the Jayhawks lost 25-17 on a match-low .065 hitting percentage, while MU recorded a match-high .324 clip.

 

The Jayhawks continue their three-match homestand on Tuesday, Oct. 27 when they host UMKC at 6:30 p.m. The match is the “Jayhawks For a Cure” contest. Donations will be accepted at the door with all donations going to benefit Lawrence Memorial Hospital and the KU Cancer Center. Fans are encouraged to wear pink.

Los Angeles, Calif. – Senior Rachel Rourke (Queensland, Australia) and junior Jill Sawatzky (St. Andrews, Manitoba) both tallied double-doubles, but the Oregon State volleyball team came up short against No. 13 UCLA (18-25, 22-25, 17-25) on Saturday evening.

 

“The bright spot in tonight’s match was seeing Megan come out and do well,” head coach Taras Liskevych said. “We just need a consistent performance night after night. And we need to just keep working hard to get over this hump with the second half of the Pac-10 schedule starting next week at Oregon.”

 

Rourke terminated 11 balls, adding 13 digs, while Sawatzky had 11 kills and 10 digs. Senior Lexie Rathgeber (White Rock, British Columbia) had a seven kill, three block performance. Freshman Alyssa O’Neil (West Linn, Ore.) had a team-high 15 digs.

 

UCLA was led by Kaitlin Sather with 11 kills. Libero Lainey Gera posted a match-high 17 digs.

 

Oregon State is now 11-10, 2-7 Pac-10, while UCLA improves to 16-6, 6-3 Pac-10.

 

The Beavers stay on the road next Friday, making the short trip south to Eugene for the second Civil War match of the season. The match is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m. and will be televised by FSN via tape delay.

 

Oregon State Notes – Senior Rachel Rourke has 1,737 career kills, 26 away from the school record … Rourke tallied her fourth double-double of the season with 11 kills and 13 digs … Junior Jill Sawatzky recorded her seventh double-double of the season with 11 kills and 10 digs.

LOS ANGELES - Senior Kaitlin Sather posted her second double-double of the weekend with 11 kills and 12 digs, while sophomore Lainey Gera added a team-high 17 digs, as the 13th-ranked Bruins continued their winning ways with a sweep of Oregon State on Saturday at Pauley Pavilion. Set scores were 25-18, 25-22, 25-17. 

UCLA has won five of its last six to move to 16-6 overall and 6-3 in Pac-10 play. Oregon State falls to 11-10 and 2-7 in league action. 

Junior Dicey McGraw also reached double figures in digs with 12, adding seven kills. Freshman Lauren Cook recorded 28 assists, eight digs and four blocks. The Bruins hit .222 as a team. 

UCLA scored six of the first seven points of the match and never looked back in winning the opener. The Bruins netted the first three points on an Oregon State service error, a combo block by Cook and sophomore Amanda Gil and a kill by McGraw. After an OSU sideout, the Beavers had two attack errors and a kill by freshman Bojana Todorovic gave the Bruins an early five-point lead. Oregon State got to within a pair on two occasions, but could get no closer. 

Ahead 12-8, the Bruins went on a 5-1 run to take a set-high lead of eight at 17-9. McGraw and Sather had kills, Cook and Gil teamed up for a block and UCLA benefitted from two OSU ball handling errors for the five points. The Bruins’ lead stayed between five and eight for the rest of the set, as an Oregon State service error on UCLA’s third set point gave the home team a 25-18 win. McGraw and Sather each had three kills, while Gil posted three blocks. The Bruins out-hit the Beavers .195 to .137. 

In a second set that featured 15 ties and three lead changes, the Bruins closed late to take a 2-0 match advantage. UCLA had no more than a two-point lead early on until Oregon State took its first advantage at 10-9. The Bruins re-took the lead at 12-11, but the Beavers came back with four of the next six to go up 15-14. 

UCLA scored the next two on a kill by Gera and an OSU attack error to go ahead 16-15 and never trailed for the rest of the set. The set was tied again at 16, 17 and 18, but consecutive kills by Cook, Sather and McGraw gave the Bruins a 21-18 lead. The Beavers closed to within one on three occasions, but leading 23-22, back-to-back kills by Sather and freshman Rachael Kidder gave UCLA the 25-22 victory. Sather led the Bruins with five kills in the second, while McGraw added three. The Bruins out-hit the Beavers .214 to .152. 

After UCLA scored the first two points of the set on kills by Gil and McGraw, the Beavers came back with four in a row to take a 4-2 edge. Oregon State still held the lead at 5-4, but following a 5-0 UCLA run, the home team would have the advantage for the rest of the set. Sophomore Katie Camp started the run with a kill, which was followed by an OSU attack error, back-to-back aces by Cook and a Sather/Camp combo block to make it 9-5. After a Beaver sideout, the Bruins came back with six of the next seven to go ahead 15-7. Todorovic had a kill and a block during the run. 

The Bruins never saw their lead dip below five the rest of the way. Leading 19-14, UCLA had a mini 3-0 run on kills by Cook and Sather and a McGraw ace to make it 22-14. The teams sided out the rest of the set, as a Cook/Gil block on the Bruins’ second match point gave them a 25-17 victory. Camp, Gil and Sather had three kills apiece, as the Bruins totaled four aces. UCLA out-hit Oregon State .265 to .094. 

Rachel Rourke (11 kills, 13 digs) and Jill Sawatzky (11 kills, 10 digs) each had double-doubles for Oregon State, which hit .132 as a team. 

The Bruins begin a three-match road trip next weekend in the Bay Area, facing California on Friday and Stanford on Saturday. Both matches start at 7 p.m. and will feature Gametracker at UCLABruins.com.

CARBONDALE, Ill. - The Northern Iowa volleyball team extended their win-streak to 18 matches, remaining unbeaten in Missouri Valley Conference play, taking down Southern Illinois at home in four sets, 25-12, 25-22, 23-25, 25-21, Saturday night in Davies Gym.

The balanced Panthers (20-2, 11-0 MVC), receiving votes in the latest AVCA poll, put five hitters in double-figure kills, hitting .261 on the night to take down the Salukis (15-7, 4-7 MVC) for the second time this season.

SIU hit -.098 in the first set with 10 errors and just six kills in 41 attacks, held to just 12 points.

"We didn't do the little things in that first set," Saluki head coach Brenda Winkeler said. "We weren't staying on our base, (UNI) was tipping in front of us and we needed to take control and not be afraid to put the ball down."

The Salukis led most of the second set until the 17-all mark. The Panthers pulled away only to have the Salukis come back for the 22-22 tie before UNI recorded three-straight kills for the win.

Southern was fired up after the break up by as many as six points, 18-12. The Panthers worked their way back tying the set at both 21 and 22-all before Jennifer Berwanger recorded two-straight kills followed by a Chandra Roberson kill for the win.

The fourth and final set was tied 11 times and changed hands five times before the Panthers scored three of the final four points for the set and match win.

Berwanger recorded her 40th-career double-double with 17 kills and 14 digs, adding one solo and one block assist, hitting a team-best .349.

Sydney Clark came off the bench for 11 kills and a solo block, while Lauren Blumhorst recorded a team-high 22 digs. Rachael Brown recorded 39 assists, adding nine digs and four kills.

"Overall I thought we played very well," Winkeler added, "especially our defense - really hard and fiery. We don't always do that and I thought tonight we did that against a top-30 team in the country."

Michelle Burow led UNI with 13 kills, while Shannon Aschoff pitched in 12. Bre Payton, Amy Braun and Beth Discher recorded 10 each, Braun adding 13 digs. League-leading libero Ellie Blankenship recorded a match-high 31 digs.

The Salukis return to the road traveling to Indiana State and Illinois State Oct. 30-31.

Hamilton keeps playing at top level, helps lead Eastern Washington to .299 hitting percentage

The Eastern Washington University volleyball team had another dominating performance on Saturday evening (Oct. 24), defeating visiting Idaho State 25-17, 25-22, 25-18 to move to 8-2 in Big Sky Conference play, 14-7 overall.

The win kept the Eagles tied for first place in the Big Sky standings with Portland State. Northern Colorado is just behind those two in the race for the regular-season title with a 7-2 league mark.

Ashley Hamilton had another top-notch performance tonight, helping the Eagles hit at a .299 clip as a team (44-12-107). Individually, she had a .444 hitting percentage (4-0-9) and contributed 34 assists.

After tying the NCAA Division I record last night with a 1.000 hitting percentage on 12 attacks (12-0-12), she extended an incredible run of consecutive kills to 15 before her second attempt tonight was dug by Idaho State. The junior did finish the evening with 30 straight attacks without an error.

The Eagles also had four other players hit at a high percentage tonight. Cora Kellerman hit .545 (6-0-11), Chenoa Coviare hit .423 (13-2-26), Sara Todorovich hit .400 (2-0-5), andHayley Hills hit .394 (16-3-33). Hills hit .542 (14-1-24) through the first two sets before quieting down in the third stanza.

"I think they were looking for our middles to get sets and that gave Hayley a lot of opportunities against one block," head coach Miles Kydd said.

Hills also set the match pace in kills with 16 tonight, while Coviare had 13. Defensively,JaNae Mortensen had 14 digs to lead all players, while Hills contributed 13 digs to Eastern's winning efforts. Todorovich set the match pace in blocks with six, while Coviare had four.

In the first set tonight, EWU pulled away from a 15-14 edge to secure a 25-17 win with a 10-3 run. The second set was close throughout, but a pivotal 3-0 run extended a 19-18 advantage to 22-18 on the way to EWU's 25-22 victory. The third stanza was more of the same, as Eastern went on an 8-2 run to extend a 17-16 edge to a 25-18 winning margin.

Eastern Washington has now won 16-of-17 at home dating back to the beginning of the 2008 season. Eastern is 7-1 in home matches so far this season.

"For us, it is a big deal to defend our home court," Kydd said. "That is important to us."

The Eagles now head east, will take on Montana State on Friday (Oct. 30) and Montana on Saturday (Oct. 31), respectively. Both matches will start at 6 p.m. Pacific Time. The Bobcats ended a 44-match Big Sky losing streak in a 3-2 road win over Montana on Friday (Oct. 23) to improve to 3-15, 1-8 in league play. Montana is now 9-11, 5-4 in Big Sky matches.

College Volleyball Game Results Yesterday 10/24: UC Riverside Volleyball Drops 3-0 Decision To UC Santa Barbara In Close Sets

Riverside, CA - Coming off their first Big West Conference win of the year against Cal Poly on Friday night, the UC Riverside volleyball team was looking to make it two in a row on Saturday evening against UC Santa Barbara at the Student Recreation Center. After three close sets, however, the Gauchos (16-5, 6-3) proved too much for the Highlanders as UCSB defeated UCR by scores of 25-19, 25-22, and 25-23.

Seniors Dominique Cowling and Tonbara Youpele led the Highlanders (3-16, 1-8) with eight kills apiece while Cowling and Katherine Castillo tied for a game-high 13 digs. UCSB's Rebecca Saraceno led all players with 13 kills.

After two tie scores in the opening moments of the first set, UCSB took an 8-5 lead only to see the Highlanders rally for three straight points to tie things up at eight all. 

The Gauchos then rattled off three consecutive points of their own en route to a 9-4 run that put them ahead 17-12. UC Riverside then responded by closing the gap to two, 18-16, off aShelby LeDuff kill, forcing UC Santa Barbara to call a timeout. After the timeout, however, UCSB closed out the set by limiting the Highlanders to just three more points in their 25-19 win.

Trailing 17-12 in the second set, UCR scored four straight points on a UCSB error and three Cowling kills to get within one at 17-16. The teams then traded points before the Highlanders completed their comeback and notched the score at 19 all.

The Gauchos then went on a 5-0 run to take a 24-19 set-point lead. The Highlanders had another rally in them, though, as they scored three consecutive points to stave off the Gauchos and get within two, 24-22, causing Santa Barbara to call a timeout. After the timeout, though, UCSB used a Lily Lopez kill to take the set 25-22.

Needing to win the third set to keep the match alive, the Highlanders kept close to the Gauchos throughout as there were 12 tie scores and eight lead changes in the set. 

UCR opened up their largest margin of the set, 16-13, capped off by a Bianca Endersby kill, only to see Santa Barbara inch back and tie things up at 20 apiece. UC Riverside won the next point but the Gauchos took the next three to lead 23-21. UCR closed the gap to one at 23-22, and after a UCSB point, the Highlanders again got within one at 24-23 before a service error by the Highlanders gave UC Santa Barbara a 25-23 win.

UC Riverside hits the road for two matches next weekend as they travel to Pacific on Friday, Oct. 30 and UC Davis on Saturday, Oct. 31. Both matches tip off at 7:00 pm.

IRVINE, Calif. --- Four Anteaters recorded double-digit kills as No. 19 UC Irvine defeated Cal Poly, 22-25, 25-10, 25-21, 24-26, 15-11 Saturday in Big West action at Crawford Court. The win lifted UCI to 17-4 overall and 7-2 conference play while the Mustangs dropped to 6-17 (2-8) overall.

 

Juliane Piggott led the Anteaters with 15 kills while adding 13 digs and five blocks. Kari Pestolesi totaled 12 kills and 15 digs and Taryn Robertson also registered a double-double with a career-high 10 kills with 46 assists. Alexandra Filkins sparked the Anteaters with a season-high 10 kills, committing just two errors in 16 swings for a .500 hitting percentage. Alexandra Hauser led UCI to an 8-6 block advantage with a career-high seven block assists. Hauser also keyed the team offensively, putting away eight of 11 attempts with no errors to hit .727. Riley Cropper logged an error-less performance, knocking down six of 12 attempts for a .500 clip. Libero Kristin Winkler picked up a team-high 24 digs to register her second consecutive match with 20 or more scoops.

 

Cal Poly was led by Jennifer Keddy, who had 12 kills while Chelsea Hardin added 11 kills and 10 digs. Alison Mort recorded the team-high with 27 digs while Anuhea Keanini handed out 54 assists.

 

The Anteaters found themselves down early in the first set as Cal Poly jumped out to a 10-4 lead on an attack error by Larissa Nordyke. Trailing 14-7, Pestolesi delivered three kills to highlight a four-point run to close the gap to three (14-11). A second three-point run by UCI knotted the score at 17 but following Nordyke’s cross-court kill to tie the set at 22-22, Cal Poly scored the final three points to take the set.

 

It was all UCI in the second frame as the team boasted a .400 hitting percentage, recording just one error in 25 attempts. The Anteaters scored eight unanswered points to lead 16-5 and never looked back. Piggott’s ace to give the team set point and a service error by Keddy tied the match at a set apiece.

 

The momentum continued for the Anteaters in the third frame as UCI opened an early 10-5 lead on a blocking error by Hardin. The Mustangs closed the gap to two points at 19-17 on a put-away from Catie Smith but UCI answered with a pair of kills from Hauser. Hauser and Pestolesi sent back a Holly Franks attempt for set point and Robertson went to Pestolesi for the game-winning point.

 

Two attack errors by Molly Pon gave UCI a 10-7 lead in the fourth set but the Mustangs reeled off four straight points to take an 11-10 lead. The Anteaters went on a late four-point run capped by a kill from Robertson to take a 20-17 edge but kills by Smith and Hardin followed by a UCI error tied the set at 21-21. Filkins’ delivered a shot down the line to give UCI set point but Smith answered with a kill Keanini found Olowolafe on consecutive plays to force a fifth game.

 

UCI stormed out to an 8-4 lead in the final frame as Piggott and Robertson combined for five kills. The Mustangs rallied but were unable to catch the Anteaters, who hit .435 in the set. Robertson connected with Piggott for match point at 14-9 and Cal Poly answered with kills by Franks and Pon but Franks was called for the blocking error to end the match.

IRVINE – The Cal Poly volleyball team featured three players with double-digit kill figures but, for the fifth time during the previous five matches, the Mustangs fell, this time dropping a 22-25, 25-10, 25-21, 24-26, 15-11 decision versus No. 19 UC Irvine Saturday evening at Crawford Court.

Freshman middle blocker Jennifer Keddy totaled 12 kills, freshman outside hitter Chelsea Hardin recorded 11 and sophomore outside hitter Catie Smith added 10 for Cal Poly (6-17, 2-8), which furthered program records for both consecutive five-set matches (six) and consecutive five-set losses. The Mustangs, who fell to 2-6 in five-set matches this season, have lost four five-set matches from a winning position.

Outhit on the night, .280-.155, Cal Poly claimed 10 of the initial 14 points during set No. 1. UC Irvine responded with a 15-8 run to snatch a 19-18 advantage and the sides deadlocked scorelines four more times before kills by junior middle blocker Dominique Olowolafe, Smith and a ball handling error by UC Irvine setter Taryn Robertson swung the game in Cal Poly’s favor.

The Big West Conference leading Anteaters (17-4, 7-2) responded by pacing both the second and third sets wire-to-wire. The Mustangs faced a 7-4 deficit to open the fourth set but, keyed by kills from Keddy, Hardin and Smith, rallied to claim a brief 12-11 lead. UC Irvine tallied the next two points and Cal Poly matched the Anteater scoreline on six separate occasions before a Hardin kill handed the Mustangs a 23-22 advantage. The Mustangs, however, faced a UC Irvine match point moments later before utilizing a kill from Smith and two from Olowolafe to force the deciding game.

The Mustangs, however, trailed the entirety of set No. 5, yielding three-consecutive points after matching UC Irvine, 3-3.

Keddy hit a match-best .429 for Cal Poly while Olowolafe and freshman opposite Holly Franks each swung for .333 marks. Mustang junior libero Alison Mort posted a season-high 27 digs.

Cal Poly returns home to host Long Beach State Friday, Nov. 30 and Cal State Fullerton Saturday, Oct. 31. Both matches begin at 7 p.m.

Las Cruces, N.M.—The San Jose State volleyball team started their match at New Mexico State by winning the first set and hitting .321, but the Aggies came back to take the final three sets and win the match, 23-25, 25-16, 25-17, 25-23.

 

The Spartans started the match by opening up set one with a 7-1 lead behind the serving of Caitlin Andrade.  New Mexico State fought back and tied the set six times before San Jose State took the lead for good at 22-21 on an Aggie hitting error.  The Spartans clinched the first set with a kill from Alex Akana.   For the set, San Jose State hit .321 with 12 kills on 28 swings and just three hitting errors, while the Aggies hit just .132.

 

After losing sets three and four, San Jose State pushed New Mexico State in the final set with 10 tied scores and eight lead changes. The Spartans took a 19-18 lead on one of three Courtney Zellmer service aces, before New Mexico State took the lead.  The Aggies had a 24-21 lead, but the Spartans would not quit, scoring two points on Taylor Japhet’s 14^th kill of the match and an Aggie hitting error made the score 24-23.  New Mexico State then recorded the victory on an Alex Akana hitting error.

 

“We played pretty well today,” said San Jose State head coach Oscar Crespo.  “It is tough going two time zones to Louisiana Tech then coming to New Mexico State.  I was pleased with the effort from everyone tonight.  We pushed New Mexico State during the match, and we played much different than on Thursday night.”

 

Japhet led the Spartans with 14 kills, followed by Kylie Miraldi with nine and Akana at eight.  Kristal Tsukano led the team with 11 digs, followed by Thao Pham at 10.  Caitlin Andrade had 38 assists and four digs.  Zellmer led the team with three service aces and added seven digs.

 

San Jose State plays two more road matches next week.  The team plays at Nevada on Thursday and at Fresno State on Saturday.  Both matches begin at 7 p.m., and live stats will be available with a link on www.sjsuspartans.com under “Live Stats.”
