Stony Brook, N.Y. (July 13, 2009) – Stony Brook University’s volleyball team solidified its 2009 roster with the signing of transfer swing hitter Harmonie Calinda (Huntington, N.Y.). A former volleyball and basketball standout at John Glenn High School, Calinda spent the last three seasons playing for Hofstra, leading the Pride in kills and digs last season.
“We’re extremely excited to have her,” said head coach Deborah Matejka-DesLauriers. “Having lost junior Alicia Nelson (Apple Valley, Minn.) to Tommy John surgery this spring, Harmonie is a huge addition for us. She adds an experienced and competitive dynamic to our team right away.”
Calinda led her high school volleyball team to five Suffolk County championships, four Long Island championships and to 2003 and 2004 New York State championships while being named to the 2004 Prep Volleyball All-America team and four All-New York State teams. On the basketball court she was the 2005 New York State Class B and Suffolk County Player of the Year in basketball after leading Glenn to a 29-0 record and its first state and federation championship. She was also a McDonald’s All-America nominee as a senior.
