HARRISONBURG, Va.—The UMBC volleyball team hit .360 as a team in the first set on their way to a 3-1 victory at James Madison Tuesday night. With the win, the Retrievers move to 7-7 on the season, while the Dukes fell to 6-9. This snapped JMU’s five game winning streak in the series.
UMBC were able to limit the Dukes to a .045 hitting percentage in the first set, while hitting 12 kills against only three errors and took the first set, 25-16. In the second, the Retrievers used 14 kills to win the second, 25-23, but the Dukes came back in the third, hitting .455 and winning 25-16. In the fourth, the Dukes hit more kills, 15-8, but the Retrievers came away with the victory, 25-21.
Sophomore Iman Kennedy (Charlotte, N.C./Independence) led the Retrievers, hitting .471 with nine kills against only one error, while junior Sabrina Hoeks (Olympia, Wash./AG West Black Hills) added nine kills and nine digs.
Sophomore Alyssa Lang (Richmond, Va./Deep Run) earned a team-high 12 kills, while senior Kira Giles (Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada/Glenlawn) claimed a double-double, with 32 assists and 10 digs.
Kelly Turner turned in a game-high 17 kills for the Dukes.
The Retrievers take the weekend off before returning to action next Tuesday when they take on cross-town rival Towson at 7 p.m. at the RAC.
