UMBC TOPS JMU VOLLEYBALL 3-1
HARRISONBURG, Va., Sept. 22, 2009 – Four players registered at least nine kills to lead Maryland-Baltimore County to a 3-1 victory over James Madison in a non-conference volleyball match on Tuesday evening in Sinclair Gymnasium.
UMBC improved to 7-7 and won by set scores of 25-16, 25-23, 16-25, and 25-21. JMU, which was playing at home for the first time since Sept. 5, fell to 6-9.
JMU head coach Disa Garner commented, “The loss tonight was disappointing because we could have played a lot better the first two sets. But at the same time, we had a different lineup. Trying to work through the lineup meant we didn’t play well in the early phases. But we played well in set three and did O.K. in set four but just had some unforced errors.”
Sophomore Kelly Turner (Ontario, N.Y./Wayne Central) registered her second double-double for the Dukes after leading all players with 17 kills while hitting .265 and adding 10 digs. Junior Lindsay Callahan (Virginia Beach, Va./Landstown), doing her first setting with the lineup change to a 6-2 offense, narrowly missed her first career triple-double with 12 kills, 16 assists, and eight digs to go with four blocks and .370 hitting.
Garner added, “Cal did an excellent job filling in to set and also swung really well. It was also nice to have Kelly Johnson (Charlotte, N.C./Providence) in there to block some balls. But with Cal setting, our offense has to be very basic. With just a day and a half, there wasn’t much time to prepare. With the switch to the 6-2, it was a lot to grasp in a short time. They really executed better than I expected all things considered.”
Sophomore Holly Wall (Kaukauna, Wisc./Kaukauna) added 12 kills and eight digs for the Dukes while junior Jessica Zeroual (Ottawa, Ont./De La Salle) contributed eight kills on .353 hitting with five blocks. Freshman Megan Wiechmann (Sunland, Calif./Village Christian) totaled 27 assists and six digs while redshirt freshman Natalie Abel (Washington, Pa./Trinity) added 16 digs at the libero spot.
Alyssa Lang led four UMBC players with at least nine kills while registering 12 kills and eight digs. Naomi Bush added 10 kills and seven digs. Sabrini Hoeks had nine kills and nine digs while Iman Kennedy also had nine kills while hitting .471. Kira Giles had a double-double with 32 assists and 10 digs. Pam Jarrett tallied 12 digs.
UMBC jumped out to a commanding lead in the first set, pulling ahead 9-2. JMU cut it to four at 11-7, before the Retrievers reeled off the next five points for a 16-7 advantage. JMU again cut it to four at 16-12, but the Dukes could get no closer in the 25-16 UMBC win. The Retrievers led the set from start to finish while hitting .360 as a team.
UMBC again grabbed the quick early lead in set two at 9-4. However, this time the Dukes gradually clawed their way back into the set and tied the score at 14-14. The teams went through 12 ties and seven lead changes, including a tie at 23-23. Lang and Kennedy registered a block to set up set point and prompt a JMU timeout. Out of the timeout, Bush finished the set with a service ace for the 25-23 win.
In the third set, the score was knotted at 7-7 when JMU went on a 6-0 run with Wiechmann at serve. JMU then led 18-14 when a 4-0 run put the Dukes firmly in control 22-14 en route to the 25-16 win.
With JMU leading 6-4 in set four, the Retrievers went on a 10-3 run to take charge at 14-8. JMU used a late 5-0 spurt to pull within one at 20-19, but UMBC responded with a four-point run to reach set point and went on to record the 25-21 win.
After playing in tournaments for most of September, JMU will open CAA play on Friday at 7 p.m. at Towson.
