PULLMAN, Wash. – A banner night from Sarah Reaves and Sarah Johnson couldn’t change the outcome Friday as the ASU Volleyball team lost a tough five set match 25-19, 24-26, 13-25, 25-17 and 15-10 to the Washington State Cougars. The loss puts ASU at 11-5 overall and 1-3 in Pac-10 play while WSU improves to
In the first set ASU came out a bit shaky, hitting only .114 to WSU’s .204 with four attack errors and a ball-handling error helping to give WSU a leg up in the set as Meagan Ganzer came out to collect six kills while Renee Bordelon kept the Cougar offense on track with 13 assists to help give WSU a 25-19 win.
Set two ASU came out with a little more fire as they started to play volleyball the A State way as they held the lead through most of the set, until the Cougars rallied back to tie it at 24 apiece. A kill from Sofie Schlagintweit broke the stalemate before a huge block by Paige Mittelstaedt and Sarah Reaves locked in the win as ASU tied it up 1-1 headed into the break.
Sarah Reaves entered the break with 10 kills and seven digs already to her name, looking to push her double-double streak to four games. While Cat Highmark already had a double-double to her name for her fifth of the season and second consecutive of the season with 20 assists and 11 digs after just two sets.
Set three Saw A State come out swinging a vicious .346 as they lit up the boards with four aces, three from Sarah Johnson alone. Sarah Reaves took the offense on her back with six kills in the set while Cat Highmark tossed the rock for 10 assists en route to a 25-13 win.
The Cougars weren’t going quietly though as they came out on fire in set four, hitting .385 to tie it up as Meagan Ganzer led the offense with the Cougar D coming in to support her act with two blocks to take a 25-17 win and force a game five.
ASU seemed to come out a bit off in set five though as they took the first point and then dropped four straight points to fall in a hole they wouldn’t recover from. They posted a good fight, but in the end Wazzou took off with the W after a 15-10 loss to wrap the night.
Head Coach Jason Watson commented after the match stating, “It’s a tough loss on the road, but there are a lot of positives that we saw in this match. The team played tough, especially Sarah Johnson with a career-high 25 digs on the night to really keep us in it. We’re seeing leadership in different places now and in the end that’s going to prove very valuable to us.”
The Sun Devils will now return home to continue Pac-10 play last weekend, hosting Oregon and Oregon State next Friday and Saturday night in Tempe at Wells Fargo Arena at 7 p.m.
