Miners Suffer Loss at Hands of Houston, 3-0
EL PASO The UTEP volleyball team dropped a three-set match at the hands of the Houston Cougars at the Athletics/Alumni Center on Saturday night in Houston, Texas.
Houston improved to 3-1 in Conference USA matches, 6-13 overall, while the Miners fell to 2-3 in league play and 9-9 for the season. Senior Catherine Chavez posted two team highs with nine kills and 11 digs for the night. Freshman outside hitter Cassandra Burruel added eight kills, while Bridget Logan, Patty Jarmoc and Irma Blanco tallied six kills each.
The Cougars held several three-point leads through the first half of the opening set before extending the lead by eight at 22-14. Logan downed a kill to end a four-point Houston run, but the Cougars responded with a pair of service aces and a blast to put the hometown team within two of set point. After a Houston attack error, Kinsey Cave posted back-to-back kills to put the Cougars up 1-0, 25-19.
UTEP denied the Cougars from carrying the momentum into the second frame keeping things paralleled until the halfway point. The Miners seemed on their way to claim the set after taking the lead at 18-14. Houston knotted things up at 20 and the teams would set out on a point-by-point battle tying things up at 21, 22, 23 and 24. Two UTEP errors gave away the stanza at 26-24.
Back from the break, Houston ran off to an early 5-1 lead to begin the third, but the Miners were not ready to hand off the match. UTEP bounced back with a 6-1 point run to take over at 7-6. Two ties and a lead change later, the Miners evened the frame at 13, but pair of Houston kills gave the home team a lead it wouldnt relent for the remainder of the set to shrug off the visiting Miners with a 25-20 final in the third.
UTEP returns to El Paso for a two-match weekend that begins with a Friday, Oct. 9, night meeting with UCF slated for 7 p.m. and on Sunday against Southern Miss, 12 p.m.
