Kelly Reeves Signs National Letter of Intent

LOS ANGELES - UCLA head women’s volleyball coach Andy Banachowski has announced that Kelly Reeves has signed a national letter of intent. Reeves, a 6-foot outside hitter out of San Diego, is finishing up her senior season at Cathedral Catholic High School.
“Kelly is an energetic kid, which will fit in well with our style of how we like to be on the court,” Banachowski said. “She is a six-rotation player and it is great to be able to have a kid who can pass, hit, play defense and be a good blocker too. Kelly is a complete package for us.”
Reeves is a two-time, first-team All-CIF and Western League Player of the Year and helped Cathedral Catholic to a CIF Division III State Championship last season, earning All-Tournament Team accolades. The Dons begin their quest for a fourth straight San Diego Section title this week. Reeves, a team captain in 2009, helped Cathedral to its fourth consecutive league championship this season. Through the regular season, she led the squad with 5.20 kills per set, 4.50 digs per set, 28 service aces and a .347 hitting percentage, adding 0.50 blocks per set. She was also named to PrepVolleyball.com’s Class of 2010 Senior Aces.
“I think she will fit in nicely and be able to contribute right away. Kelly is the same type of player that (outgoing senior Kaitlin Sather) is as far as having all the skills. Whether it is in Kaitlin’s position or somewhere else, she is the type of player who is going to push hard to get herself out on the court and she is going to be out there because she can do everything.”
Reeves plays club with Encinitas Wave and was named Most Valuable Player at the 2008 Junior Olympic Girls’ Volleyball Championships, helping her team to a 16 Open National Title, also earning a bronze with the 17 Open squad in 2009. Reeves’ club coach is her mother Jeanne, who was a four-year letterwinner (1979-82) at UCLA under Banachowski. Reeves (née Beauprey) was an All-American in 1982 and is 14th on the Bruins’ all-time kills list. She was an assistant coach on the 1990 and 1991 National Championship squads and was inducted into the UCLA Hall of Fame in 2000.
“It is pretty exciting to get another legacy player and it is going to be fun coaching another daughter of a former player,” Banachowski added.
The younger Reeves also won gold as a member of the U.S. Youth National Team at the 2008 NORCECA Girls’ Youth Continental Championships. On the beach, she won the 2008 USA Beach Junior Open Championships 16-and-under title with partner Natalie Hagglund.
