WSU Freshman Volleyball Player Oceana Bush at USA National Volleyball Team Tryouts
PULLMAN, Wash. -- Washington State volleyball player Oceana Bush will participate in the annual open tryouts for the U.S. Women’s National Team and Associated Training Programs, Feb. 19-21, 2010, at the U.S. Olympic Training Center (USOTC) in Colorado Springs, Colo.
Bush, a freshman libero/defensive specialist from Spokane, Wash., was a Pacific-10 Conference All-Freshman team first team selection last fall. Bush led the NCAA Tournament participant Cougars’ 2009 team in digs with 531 and had a 4.78 digs per set average which was fourth-best in the Pac-10. She set the school record with 39 digs in the five-set match win over Arizona State Oct. 3. Bush tallied double-digit digs in 29 of WSU’s 31 matches and had 9 digs in the other two matches. She was named the top libero at the Utah Valley La Quinta Inn & Suites Invite.
Hugh McCutcheon, the U.S. Women’s National Team Head Coach, will lead the evaluation process for spots on the U.S. Women’s Volleyball National Team program and the U.S. Women’s Senior A2 teams. The U.S. Women’s National Team program is open to athletes who have concluded their college eligibility and who wish to train full-time. This program could begin as early as February 2010, or when an athlete’s scholastic or professional club season has concluded. Athletes who will have remaining collegiate eligibility may still participate in the program with participation beginning May 2010 or when their scholastic calendar ends.
“I think this is a good opportunity for Oceana to get in the USA Volleyball pipeline and be recognized and at least evaluated to see if her talent and abilities are up to what is needed for the next Olympic Games,” Cougar Head Coach Andrew Palileo said. “Oceana will put her name out there and she will have a goal she can work towards if that is something that she wants to do. Washington State wanted to provide her this opportunity so that Oceana could go to Colorado Springs and showcase her abilities.”
