Cal Poly Mustangs Volleyball Program Adds Justin Hutchins to Coaching Staff
SAN LUIS OBISPO – Sixth-year volleyball head coach Jon Stevenson finalized his staff for the 2010 campaign on Wednesday afternoon as the Cal Poly Athletics Department announced that former Utah Valley University assistant coach Justin Hutchins has joined the Mustang program in a similar capacity.
A native of Simi Valley, Calif., Hutchins arrives on the central coast following a three-season stint at Utah Valley University (2005-06, 2008), where he served the Wolverine program as technical advisor, defensive systems coordinator and as a recruiter. In conjunction with the physical education department, Hutchins also taught volleyball classes.
Hutchins, 32, spent the 2007-08 academic year as a volunteer assistant with the BYU men’s program, aiding the Cougar coaching staff with skill analysis and instruction, as well as video feedback and statistical tracking.
“Coming to Cal Poly is a dream come true on many levels,” Hutchins said. “I’m excited to work with Jon, as he is a legend of the game who is always teaching and motivating, The rest of the staff is phenomenal and the athletes are serious about success on and off the court. I feel honored to be a part of such a quality program.”
Hutchins has served as co-owner and director of Club Utah Volleyball since 2004. As program coordinator, Hutchins implemented and refined club philosophies and training methods, in addition to overseeing the organization’s coaching staff. In a coaching capacity with the club, he directed the 18s, 15s and 14s squads to various regional championships and Junior Olympics qualifying tournaments.
Hutchins’ 11-year coaching career also includes a decade-long association with the renown Gold Medal Squared Volleyball Camps and Clinics where, in dispersing the organization’s training philosophies and methodologies, he served in various coaching and administrative capacities such as camp clinician, lead camp coach and employee recruiter.
Hutchins capped his collegiate playing career by helping the Utah Valley University men’s club team to a Division I national championship in 2001 and a third-place finish in 2002. Hutchins transferred to UVU after serving as captain and starting for Golden West College (1999-00) in Huntington Beach, Calif.
“Our program is fortunate to have an individual of Justin's caliber joining our staff. He is a quality person who is equally qualified to teach volleyball,” said Stevenson, the 2006 and 2007 Big West Conference Coach of the Year. “I see Justin as a unique human being as it relates to his respect for volleyball and for the comprehensive and appropriate development of our student-athletes. I could not be more excited about the balance of our coaching staff as we work with the most talented group of young athletes we’ve ever had in our program.”
Hutchins, who earned a B.S. in behavioral science from Utah Valley University, replaces Ossie Antonetti, who departed for his native Puerto Rico in November after serving for two seasons on Stevenson’s staff. Second-year assistant Caroline Walters completes the Mustang coaching staff.
