Chris Kosty Joins Indiana University Volleyball Team Staff as Assistant Coach
BLOOMINGTON, Ind.- Chris Kosty officially began his position as an assistant coach for the Indiana University volleyball program on Monday, Apr. 12. Kosty comes to IU from North Idaho College, where he served as the head coach of the Cardinals for two seasons.
“We are excited to finally have Chris in Bloomington to join the Hoosier family,” said Head Coach Sherry Dunbar. “He was a little delayed because his family added a new little Hoosier to the clan at the end of last month. We are so happy that they will all be here together this week.”
“I’m very honored to be able to work at IU and to be surrounded by great people in an athletic department with such an outstanding tradition,” said Kosty.
In 2009, Kosty led NIC to the No. 1 ranking in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) polls, the first time in the school’s history. He also guided the Cardinals to a co-conference championship in the Scenic West Athletic Conference (SWAC).
“Chris will add a lot to our program with his high-level playing experience at Hawaii and the U.S. National Team, and his very successful stint as head coach at North Idaho College,” said Dunbar.
In his first season as head coach in 2008, Kosty led the Cardinals to a Region 18 tournament championship and an NJCAA national tournament appearance, where the team finished 11th in the country.
Kosty began his collegiate playing career at Goldenwest Junior College in Huntington Beach, Calif., where he won two California state championships and the prestigious state Most Valuable Player Award.
Following his sophomore season, Kosty transferred to the University of Hawaii and became a starting outside hitter. After college, Kosty played professional volleyball in Europe, playing one season for a club team in Germany and one season for a team in Switzerland. Kosty then returned to the states to train with the U.S. National Team as a libero. He also played on the Association of Volleyball Professionals (AVP) tour for five years (2000-04).
Kosty returned to college at Long Beach State to complete his bachelor’s degree in History in 2002. While at Long Beach, Kosty served as the volunteer coach of the women’s volleyball team that finished 28-4.
He has also coached club volleyball and served as an assistant coach at Oregon State University.
Chris’s wife, Brandy (Barratt), recently gave birth to the couple’s second child, ason named Koli, born on March 20. Their other son, Kenno, will turn two years old on June 29th. The family now resides in Bloomington. Kosty’s older brother, John, currently serves as the head coach for the Stanford Men’s Volleyball program.
