Jill Sawatzky Leads Oregon State Beavers Volleyball Team to Sweep of Portland State Tournament
Corvallis, Ore. – Senior Jill Sawatzky (St. Andrews, Manitoba) had 30 kills to lead the Oregon State volleyball team at the Portland State Spring Tournament as it swept Western Washington, Portland and Portland State on Saturday, Apr. 10.
“It was a good day overall,” associate head coach Mark Barnard said. “It was good especially for the current freshmen class to get some time playing someone other than ourselves. That was the best thing about the day and watching how they improved and got better during the day.”
The Beavers defeated Western Washington, 2-0, in scores of 34-32, 25-17. Sawatzky had 10 kills, while sophomore Ashley Eneliko (Seattle, Wash.) added six kills and three block assists. Sophomore Tami Brown (Eugene, Ore.) had a solid defensive outing with a pair of block solos and five block assists to lead the team to 10 total blocks. And sophomore Alyssa O’Neil (West Linn, Ore.) tallied a pair of aces.
Against the Portland Pilots, Oregon State won 3-0 in scores of 25-23, 25-17, 20-18, rallying from deficits of 12-9 and 13-10 to take the final set to 15. Sawatzky reached double digits again with 11 kills with sophomore Camille Saxton (Balzac, Alberta) and senior Kiersten Sambrailo (Watsonville, Calif.) both adding seven of their own with Sambrailo also posting seven block assists. Brown blocked another five balls, adding four aces. As a team, the Beavers had 12 total blocks and six service aces with greenshirt freshman Becky Defoe (Bend, Ore.) serving the other two.
