annual USA Volleyball Girls’ Junior National Championships 18 Open Gold

last weekend at the Reno-Sparks
Convention Center in Reno, Nevada.
Mary Carls and Shannon Fleming will join head coach volleyball coach Paula Weishoff’s Anteater volleyball team this fall.
Mary Carls and Sports Shack 18-Asics went 10-1, dropping just three sets in 11 matches to capture gold. After falling to Laguna Beach 18, 2-1, the college volleyball team went on to sweep its final four opponents, including Rancho Valley 18-1 by scores of 25-22 and 25-23, in the title match.
Carls, a 5-9 volleyball setter, was a four-year letterwinner at Marymount High School. The standout helped the team go undefeated in the Sunshine League her junior and senior seasons and captured team Most Valuable Player honors as a sophomore and a freshman.
Fleming, a member of the Vision 18 Gold volleyball team, won bronze at the event. Vision 18 Gold was 7-2, rebounding from an early loss to Orange County 18 Roxy and winning five straight matches before falling 25-22, 25-19 to Sports Shack 18-Asics.
Fleming, a middle blocker, who prepped at Archbishop Mitty High School, was named an Under Armour All-American last season. The All-West Catholic Athletic League talent helped her high school volleyball team win CIF state titles as a junior and senior and is a four-time volleyball league champion. Fleming posted 228 kills and 135 total blocks her senior year.
The 2010 Anteaters open the season August 27 against Washington State in Pullman, Wash.
