U. Miami Volleyball News: Miami's Lane Carico Named AVCA All-American
Carico becomes first-ever Hurricane to claim AVCA All-America honors.
KANSAS CITY, Mo. – University of Miami junior outside hitter Lane Carico was named to the 2010 American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Division I All-America Third Team, announced Weds., Dec. 15. The awards will be presented Fri., Dec. 17, at the site of this year’s NCAA Volleyball Championships in Kansas City, Mo.
Each of the three AVCA All-America Teams is comprised of 14 student-athletes. The Division I AVCA National Player of the Year will not be announced until Fri., Dec. 17, at the AVCA All-America/Players of the Year Banquet presented by Zamst.
Being selected to this year’s Third Team, Lane Carico becomes the first University of Miami volleyball player to ever collect All-America honors, after being named as an honorable mention performer the past two seasons. Others earning honorable mention selections in the past include Cassie Loessberg (2009), Karla Johnson (2005), Francheska Savage (2005), Valeria Tipiana (2004) and Leyre Santaella Sante (2003).
Named to the All-Atlantic Coast Conference Team for the third consecutive season, Carico – a 5-11 native of Manhattan Beach, Calif., was second in the league in kills (471 / 3.83 per set); third in service aces (38 / 0.31 per set); and third in points (535.5 / 4.35 per set). She also led the ACC in double-doubles, registering a personal season-best 26 on the campaign. Carico leads the all-time UM list for double-doubles with 60 in her three-year career in Coral Gables.
She was the only player in the conference to record 400 kills and 400 digs in the 2010 regular season, helping lead the ‘Canes to their second consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance, and third overall since the program was reinstated in 2001. Carico finished the year second on the UM squad in digs with 454 (3.69 per set). She notched 16 kills and 14 digs while battling through illness in Miami’s NCAA Tournament match against Indiana University in Bloomington, Ind. on Fri., Dec. 3.
Just a week ago, Carico was named to the AVCA All-East Region Team for the third consecutive year, while teammate Katie Gallagher (Winter Park, Fla.) picked up her first All-Region award. In 2008, Carico was selected as the AVCA East Region Freshman of the Year, in addition to be selected to the All-East Region Second Team.
Joining Carico from the ACC on the All-America Third Team is ACC Player of the Year Kellie Catanach (Jr., S) from Duke University.
The selections were made by the AVCA Division I All-America Committee: chair – Keylor Chan, Northwestern; Joe Getzin, Mississippi; Christy Johnson-Lynch, Iowa State; Mike Jordan, New Mexico State; Anne Kordes, Saint Louis; Lee Maes, Virginia; Andrew Palileo, Washington State; Lisa Seifert, Southern Methodist. The AVCA Awards Chair is Dayton head volleyball coach Kelly Sheffield.
