University at Buffalo Volleyball Players Kristin Bignell And Marisa Hornbaker Named Academic All-MAC
BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo volleyball team placed two members on the 2010 Academic All-MAC team on Monday morning as seniors Kristin Bignell and Marisa Hornbaker picked up the honor. For Hornbaker it was her third consecutive honor.
Hornbaker was one of two players named to the team for three straight years, the most a player can be honored. A Pharmocology and Toxicology major with a 3.950 average, Hornbaker finished the season with 213 kills, which was fifth on the team. Hornbaker also had 24 service aces and 116 digs for the Bulls, who finished the season 18-16. In addition to her three trips on the Academic All-MAC Team, Hornbaker also has twice been named to the ESPN Academic All-District team.
Bignell, an exercise science major with a 3.906 GPA, had 232 kills and led the team with 123 total blocks. Bignell has twice been named to the Academic All-MAC Team and was also an ESPN Academic All-District selection this past season. Bignell concluded her career as one of just five players in school history to go over 800 kills and 400 blocks.
To be nominated, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests for that particular sport. First-year students and junior college transfers in their first year of residence are not eligible for the award. Outstanding academic and athletic accomplishments from the current season only are considered. The Academic All-MAC team is voted on by the league’s faculty athletic representatives.
