Long Island University Volleyball Team Unveils 2011 Campaign
BROOKLYN, N.Y. – Head coach Kyle Robinson and the Long Island University women’s volleyball team have released the Blackbirds’ 2011 schedule. Long Island is slated to play 32 regular-season matches, including four in-season tournaments, as the team seeks to return to the top of the Northeast Conference standings.
The season opens with a visit to California for the Fresno State Classic. Long Island will square off with San Diego on Friday, Aug. 26 to kick off play before meeting Cal Poly and host Fresno State on Aug. 27. The Blackbirds will then head to Charlottesville, Va., for the Holiday Inn Jefferson Cup with East Carolina, California and host Virginia on Sept. 2-3 before a visit to Seton Hall on Sept. 6.
Long Island will open the home portion of its schedule on Sept. 9 with this year’s installment of the two-day Blackbird Invitational. The Blackbirds will host Syracuse on the first day of action before closing out the tournament with matches against Lehigh and Temple. After a home date with St. John’s on Sept. 13, Long Island will conclude tournament play with a visit to defending national champion Penn State for the Penn State Classic. The Blackbirds will meet the Nittany Lions on Sept. 17 before taking on Rutgers and Florida Gulf Coast the next day.
NEC play kicks off on Sept. 24 when Long Island hosts Robert Morris. The Blackbirds will play home-and-home matches with each of their eight league opponents while sprinkling in non-conference home matches with Hofstra and Stony Brook. A home date with Central Connecticut State on Nov. 13 will wrap up the regular season. The four-team NEC Tournament is scheduled for Nov. 19-20 at the home of the highest seed.
